We try to return at least twice a year in spite of living just a short distance away. It is wonderfully restoring to be here.
Our third visit to The Star Lookout, and nothing has changed one bit really since our last trip in 2019. Seeing Ray once again was absolutely priceless, and hanging-out with Gin & Tonic (the cats) was perfect for us, as we have a pair just like them at home. Talk about all the comforts of home, we love those cats. The Star Lookout is the place to admire God's Art Gallery, both day and night. I am still honored to have contributed photos to the website of the night sky. This trip the clouds were playing and we shot day/night 4k timelapse and counted over 100 deer running in the wild. Janice, you really are a blessing to all of us who have experienced this place. Mahalo nui loa for sharing this amazing house with those of us who are able to stay here even for one night. There is no other place on Maui like this, but no kinder hosts and caretakers either. We sure love you people, and the house. I am already planning for next summer. Aloha, and fo shua, a hui ho! H&S
We love Star Lookout. Will be back soon.
This is a very comfortable small house in a unique and different location at 3,000 feet elevation overlooking Maalea Bay, on a country road. Great views and lots of privacy and peace and quiet.
In researching Maui before this visit (our first), we were surprised and intrigued to read about the upcountry region on the flanks of Haleakala. We hoped staying here would give us a flavor of the area. It was even better than we had hoped! A wonderful small cottage with a glorious view. The caretaker was very helpful, not only about the cottage itself but also with advice about shopping etc. (The cottage is fairly isolated, although shopping is not far if you know where to go.) We would definitely want to come back here on any future visit to Maui.
We live on Maui and like to spend 3 nights at Star Lookout about every 3 or 4 months. It is a beautiful, relaxing experience. Especially beautiful is the expansive sky, ever changing from sunrise to sunset. We also enjoy the hot tub and the fire pit or the wood burning stove and walks along pastoral Thompson Road at the top of the property.
Of all the places I have traveled, when I tell you this is my FAVORITE vacation rental I have ever stayed at, I mean it. I could go on and on about this amazing cottage and property. We stayed for two nights and didn't want to leave. We sat on the deck right until 11am (check out time) to soak in every last breathtaking view. A few things we loved about the property: - The views (obviously) - The sunrises and sunsets (you have great views for both) - The character of the cottage - so nicely decorated - The hot tub! - Gin & Tonic, the property cats - The property sheep (forget their names!) - The fruit available to pick on the property (limes, tangerines, lemons & more) - Close to Haleakala - Up the street from Grandma's Coffeehouse (try the coconut crusted french toast & their chai latte) - & many many other things. As mentioned, I could go on and on. It was a dream. We WILL be back. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
and intend to visit again.
Our stay here in Kula was a D R E A M . The view is encapsulating at every second of the day, and absolutely never gets old. We enjoyed relaxing in the hot tub, and loved the view from the bed. The little kitchen were perfect, but the deck was where we spent the majority of our time. We made good friends with their cats, Gin and Tonic, and enjoyed watching Lenny and Squiggy and the herds of Axis in the fields ( thank you for providing binochulars!) The sunsets were incredible, and we even ventured out to grab some pizza at Marlow in Makawao and ended up grabbing a beer at Mahalo Aleworks next door, because they had live music going, and it turned out they were partnered, so we could eat the pizza inside! As an East Coaster/ Self-Proclaimed New Haven Pizza Elistist, I really enjoyed the white mushroom pizza, and the sour beers at Mahalo were a delight! This was the absolute highlight of our trip. We loved every second here. We got in our car at 10:59am on the day of our checkout and literally shed a tear, because we didnt want to leave. We can't wait to come back one day. Thank you so much for the opportunity to experience this absolute piece of Heaven. Mahalo. Dee & Kris
Literally the nicest place ive ever stayed in.
Our family enjoyed staying at this beautiful place. Great location and perfect for a family.
I didn’t think my second stay could be better than my first but it was!! The location and views are amazing! If I am fortunate to stay a third time I am certain it will be “Heaven on Earth!” Thank you Janice for sharing your beautiful home will my family:)
We had an amazing time in the Upcountry thanks to this amazing cottage. It was so comfortable and the views were stunning no matter the time of day. The outdoor firepit was put to good use, even in the summer as the nights were cool. And sitting in the hot tub enjoying the stars was an experience not to be missed. Add in the wonderful resident sheep, cats and local deer and birds, and this was a rejuvenating stay for the whole family. We will definitely be back!
Great spot.
This is the perfect destination if you want to get away from it all! Quiet and serene, it is a place to unplug and watch the sunsets and stars.
We were only able to stay for 2 nights, which was way too short, but this is an outstanding place to stay in upcountry Maui. Sitting at 3000 feet above sea level, there were great views of both coasts as well as Haleakala. It was also fun to enjoy goats and deer grazing and playing nearby. At night we were able to enjoy the sunset and then the multitude of stars coming out shortly afterward. We will absolutely look into staying here again when we return to Maui.
Just can't say enough about how much we loved this place. We stayed 3 different places on Maui in 1 week and this was my favorite!! :) Basecamp for 2 nights to check out Haleakala. Compact and cute. Bed seems odd at first, crammed into the corner with the windows -- but OMG, so fantastic to have arrived/slept in the dark, seeing the lights that I knew were Kihei and Kapulua and then waking up to see it all in daylight. And the 2 friendly sheep just outside. And the bed was sooooo comfy. And the gas stove is amazing - kitchen more than well equipped and great basic supply of spices. Deer heard seen daily off the back deck; we were able to count at least 39 of them at a time. Make sure to check out the book recommended on the tackboard that reveals the past about the owners -- how COOL!!!!! Host was immediate communicative on anything needed. Stars were gorgeous. Used the hot tub - wonderful, plenty hot. Friendly cat greeted us every time we were outdoors. We picked a few oranges and limes while there in March. The herbs were not in season. Noticed the male owner of the place roadbiking along the lane ; was nice to say hi. Didn't know his back story at the time. Humble lovely man. Loved, loved, loved this place. Has a guestbook - we left a note. Good to know: - Wifi not working on arrival, because it had been unplugged,. I'm decently tech savvy and was able to reconnect and get it working without bugging the host - laundry is mentioned in the listing but couldn't find it described in the host book. Contacted host via VRBO and learned it is in an outdoor laundry house up behind the owner's home. You need to walk by the owner's doors/windows to use -- they didn't seem to mind at all, I asked ahead of time just to be courteous. Worked very well. - hot tub is not connected directly to the unit. It's about 30 yards away. Easy to get to and use, but it's actually somewhat between this VRBO and the host's house.
