Bandon, Oregon
Ideal for a quiet couples getaway or a solo artist / writer’s / birdwatcher's retreat, this unique, one-bedroom beach cottage was custom built by hand in the 1950's with wood that washed up on nearby Black Rock Beach. The rustic, cedar shake cottage and flower garden are located directly on an estuary and Redmon Pond—and nestled two blocks from the beach on the South Jetty of the Coquille River, in Bandon, Oregon.
The Space:
The cedar-walled main bedroom sleeps two on a queen-sized Nectar memory foam mattress—and has a cozy window nook with a view of migrating birds on Redmon Pond. Imported stained glass windows and recently refinished Douglas Fir floors accent the beautiful cedar walls and open-beamed ceilings throughout. Custom beach-rock entry and hearth with cozy Jötul wood burning stove will keep you warm. Equipped for light cooking, the kitchen has a small electric range/oven, small dishwasher, full-size fridge and a toaster. There is a 32” HDTV with Apple TV (netflix, hulu, hbo) available for your use in the den. There is a walk-in shower with wood walls and slate floor in the bathroom. Once home to a local ceramics artist in the 70’s and 80’s (her studio is out back) the cottage pays tribute to her with an eclectic collection of ceramics and fine art I’ve been scrounging from galleries, thrift & antique stores for the last 25 years.
The 650 sq ft cottage was hand-built in the 1950’s by a master carpenter with driftwood and salvaged lumber that washed ashore on nearby Black Rock Beach. There are four other houses nearby that he built as well. See if you can spot them! Fall asleep in a piece of Bandon’s unique hand-crafted artisan history—along with the peaceful sounds of Redmon Pond frogs, beach waves crashing—or the soothing South Jetty foghorn in the distance. The stars are insane here.
Getting Around:
Black Rock Beach is a two-block walk, the town of Bandon is a ten minute walk with it's famous Old Town and restaurants, crab shacks, bars and shops! You can crab from the pier in town and rent crabbing supplies at the Bait Shop. They’ll even cook and clean your crabs at Tony’s Crab Shack - in the harbor.
Other Details to Note:
The house is very small. Please watch your head.
The cozy kitchen is equipped for light cooking. As there is no ventilation in the kitchen, we ask guests to please keep cooking simple (no stinky fish, keep lids on boiling pots, etc).
The cottage is adjacent to a wildlife refuge/estuary and pond. There are three resident geese that walk through the property, which can be enchanting, but there are other more opportunistic critters that reside along side them that are less enchanting. Please be aware this is “the country” and as magical as this place may seem, nature is present and often seeks shelter from the elements. We do our best to keep things at bay while existing in tandem with nature while we are living here. Your understanding of the environment and flexibility around it’s unforeseen possibilities are appreciated.
Good location. Short walk to the beach. Pleasant neighborhood. Rustic, but comfortable.
We loved this cottage for so many reasons. It's cute as a button inside and out and the landscaping is lovely. It's located about 1/4 mile from the beach and yet it's close to area restaurants too. The kitchen is well stocked with all types of utensils with everything one needs for cooking. And there's tons of condiments in the refrigerator and herbs and spices as well. The cottage is 70 years old and 80% of the walls are wood paneling. And the vaulted ceiling makes it feel much larger than it is. It's perfect for two! There's also lots of artwork and interesting tchotchkes throughout the cottage that gave the place the charm of an artist's residence. We'll be back for sure!!!
A true artist’s home. Built buy hand, and every appointment and detail stunning. From hard wood and rock floors, gorgeous garden, and 3 min from Bandon Beach, I love/hate leaving this glowing review for a special sanctuary.
This is a charming and quaint small cabin built by a master carpenter at a great location near the mouth of the Coquille river and backs up to a wetland pond with some resident snow geese and great Egrets as well as ducks and other seasonal waterfowl. We were surprised that the bed did not have a top sheet and there were none on the premises, just bottom sheets, a heavy duvet and some wool blankets. There is no coffee pot, just a French Press, if you like playing with your coffee. There is also no microwave. The kitchen is fairly well supplied with utensils for preparing meals, but could use a small pan and small skillet. If you have balance issues be forewarned the floor in each room is at a slightly different level and going from one room to the next could pose a trip hazard if you don't pay attention to these transitions. All in all a great accommodation and we'd definitely return again.
We really enjoyed our stay. The cottage is so adorable. Beach was close and beautiful. The town of Bandon was fun. We didn't need to travel too far to enjoy a lot!
Perfectly equipped and conveniently located just steps from beach and town. We can’t wait to return. Thank you, Topher!
