The region

Watchet is a historic harbour town on the West Somerset coast, one of the oldest ports in England. Its working marina, independent shops, and friendly atmosphere make it a wonderful base for exploring Exmoor.

The town sits where the Washford River meets the Bristol Channel, with a compact centre of colour-washed cottages, narrow lanes, and a lively harbourside. Watchet has a long maritime heritage -- it was a busy trading port in Saxon times and is famously linked to Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who is said to have been inspired to write The Rime of the Ancient Mariner after visiting the harbour. A striking statue of the mariner stands on the Esplanade.

Town Amenities

Watchet has a good range of everyday amenities for a small town. There is a convenience store, a post office, a chemist, and several independent shops along Swain Street, including galleries, gift shops, and a bookshop. The town also has a laundrette, a fish and chip shop at the harbour, and several cafes. There is a pay-and-display car park near the marina and free on-street parking in the town centre.

Nearby Shopping

Williton is approximately 2 miles away and has a petrol station, Co-op supermarket, and a few additional shops. Minehead, approximately 8 miles west along the coast, has Tesco, Morrisons, and Lidl, as well as most high street banks, a post office, and a wider range of shops. For a full day of shopping, Taunton is approximately 25 miles away and Bridgwater approximately 18 miles, both with town centres and retail parks.

We were very happy with the property. It was very clean, well equipped and nicely decorated. It was in the middle of the village so very convenient for shops and pubs etc. Also for visiting the area. The owner of the property was also very helpful. A good stay despite the weather!

Cuain Cottage was nicer than I expected ,I don't think the listing does it Justice .Very clean .Lovely comfy beds .Black out curtains and blinds .Electric fake gas fire in lounge if feeling chilly and don't want to put heating on .Comfy sofas . Lots of hangers!!! Parking was super easy ,car park a few steps away ,always spaces ,weekly permit provided .No problem parking without blocking road for drop off and departure .Actually easier than squeezing into a dedicated space . Great wi fi and phone signal .Netflix and echo Dot . We set off smoke detectors ( because we would wouldn't we ) .To turn off/reset you push the button on the one at the foot of the stairs .Silences both and easier to reach than kitchen one . No family bathroom ,compact shower and WC room . Brilliant location -Watchet is compact and easy with everything you need ,a little old fashioned which we liked ..Great base for trips to Lynton ,walks on Quantock Hills ,Dunster Castle ( tho latter pricey ,tiring and lacks a lot of the informative guides that it used to have ) Market day on a Weds and again on first Sunday of month. Eating out - we defaulted to kebab /pizza place on Swain St when we arrived tired and late .Didn't fancy the pubs and deterred from fish and chip shop by bad reviews from Co OP staff . Cat's Whiskers ( 5 min walk ) is fabulous !!! As is Radio Museum next door to it - be prepared for more info than you can possibly want and a good 40 min visit . The harbour front is a few steps away at the end of the cul-de-sac -we used to walk round and drink our coffee there . Esplanade Lane is a cul-de-sac ,so no through traffic . Turn left from Esplanade Lane for Co Op shop just round the corner and right for Deli with sandwiches ,coffee ,bacon sandwiches ,pasties ,smoothies . Mineral Line walk on doorstep for lovely amble .Steam trains also on doorstep for days out . We would definitely come again .

The cottage is simple, clean and was lovely to stay in. Parking was never a problem in one of the nearby car parks, all of which are a short walk from the cottage.

Lovely location, just off main street, yet quiet with the harbour a stones throw for evening strolls and the interesting new East Quay Arts development. Nicely decorated and homely.

Outstanding location, you really could not get any closer to the harbour. Watchet is a lovely small seaside town, with all the facilities you could need

Nice, quiet little place in the middle of Watchet, only a few paces from pasties, cider, ice-cream, pubs, places to eat, steam railway, local art centre and of course the sea. Easy walk to the beach and short car journeys to alternatives including for fossil hunting and cream teas. Very nice host, helpful and quick to respond to messages.

People seem to eat early in Watchet so either book or take a chance that you will be served after 8pm!

Cuain Cottage is a clean and comfortable place to stay in a great location by the harbour close to all the facilities in Watchet. The owners were very helpful and we had a lovely time and hope to come back to stay again one day.
