Sandwich, New Hampshire
Step out of your car and immediately be embraced by the sounds of the river! Cold River Retreat is a quirky little cottage that sits right beside the Cold River in Sandwich, New Hampshire. Step through the door to a cozy, comfortable space filled with unique art and textiles, all overseen by the cottage mascot, Marcel. This is the refuge that you've been looking for!
The main living area has a wall of windows/doors over-looking the river. On warm days, open them up to have the sound of rushing water fill the space. On colder days, turn on the electric "fireplace stove" for the warmth and cheer. Step into the kitchen, where you'll find basic kitchenware to prepare your favorite comfort food or beverage - or take your cooking outside to the electric grill. Enjoy your meals on the deck or at the dining table by the window.
The main bedroom has a queen bed with comfy bedding. I love to switch things up from time to time, so the actual quilt might be different than in the pictures, but it will always be colorful and comfortable! There's even a USB charging outlet in the lamp by the bed for your cell phone.
The smaller bedroom is fitted with a twin size antique metal bedframe and will be made up upon request. This would be perfect for two friends traveling together that might want the privacy of separate rooms.
In the bathroom, you'll find a neo-angle shower with rain shower head plus a hand-held shower for your convenience. Of course, basic toiletries are provided.
Although the inside of the cottage is "cool" and a bit quirky, it's the river setting that is so compelling. Spend your time swinging in the hammock, watching the water flow by. Be mesmerized by the sound of water tumbling over rocks, the smell of the large hemlock tree over-head, and the sight (if you're lucky) of the water birds flying up-river. Immerse yourself in the magic of the river.
Around the property you'll find several pieces of "yard art". Some pieces were made by my son and others are things picked up along the way. Each one adds a certain sense of wonder to the yard. Speaking of the yard - we don't use chemicals any more than absolutely necessary, so if a golf course type lawn is on your must-have list, you won't find it here.
You will be in an area of lots of protected forest, which means that you might be fortunate enough to see wildlife passing through. We have bears, dear, foxes, turkeys, etc. who all at one time or another wander by. Respect their space and they'll do the same for you! But please don't leave food out overnight. We also ask that the bugs stay outside, although every once in a while they don't listen! You can help them to remember by keeping the screen door closed.
Cold River Retreat has been my "go-to place" for renewal, and I hope that it will be the same for you! A place for quiet contemplation, reflection, and rejuvenation, CRR appeals to that inner voice that we have telling us to slow down and just be. Like the river -- let it flow.

We were exploring places in NE that we had never been before while gazing at the foliage. While the weather was a little rainy, the place was perfect! The sound of the river was very calming, the falling leaves were pretty and the coziness of the retreat made it a very enjoyable stay.
Location was perfect - loved the sound of the river. The cottage was spotless and I appreciated the quality of items available for our use and the attention to details. It was apparent that much thought and care was involved in choosing appliances and furnishings.
My wife and I booked this cottage to attend a wedding in the area. We couldn’t have been more pleased with it. Decorated with a whimsical fare it is the perfect place for a getaway weekend. Very private and listening to the babbling river was wonderful. Highly recommend a stay here.
Debra was very friendly and helpful. The river was soothing to listen to and interesting to watch rolling over the rocks. Very quiet location with no traffic. We had a great time.
If you ever want to escape the city and the stress of everyday life this is the place to be. This is my 2nd time staying here and we cannot wait to come back. This place is definitely good for the mind and soul. The Debra is truly an amazing host.
Very clean. Great for a quiet getaway!
My wife and I stayed at Cold River Retreat for 3 nights while we were in search of Fall colors on our first trip to New England. We did not have to go far! The trees across the river in the front yard were gorgeous, and we relaxed for hours right on the spot. We took a day trip to Portland Maine for fresh lobster and saw wonderful Fall colors all the way. Highly recommend this cozy house with unique artwork and every amenity we needed. It was nice to meet Deb upon our arrival, and her love of the home is obvious in the tasteful detail of every room. Thank you Deb!!
I used this as home base for Timberman triathlon. It was relaxing and perfect.
We greatly enjoyed our stay by the river listening to the water. Had breakfast on the porch with the humming birds and lunch with the blue dragonflies. Kitchen was well setup and so meal prep was easy. Hope to return to this peaceful setting again.
I can not express how much we loved it. The quietness ,the beauty of nature and the running water of the river at night we truly fell in love with the place. The details inside the home inspired me to decorate my my own home. I highly recommend this place. I hope to be back soon.
Let the flow of the river take it all away
This cottage is everything we needed and more. Deb was a fantastic hostess and predicted our needs beautifully. Great place to run away to and leave chaos behind. 3 tips: Make your destination Meredith NH and go out 25 to 113 then to the yellow house and the crossways. Takes you straight there! Bring water shoes and explore the river during low current. So worth the walk! Bring binoculars and make sure to check out the really cool bridge close to the cottage! Thanks again Deb!
We had an amazing weekend at the Cold River cottage! Deb was communicative and her directions were easy to follow. The grounds are wonderfully kept and the cleanliness of the entire place was impeccable. We lounged on the porch, saw a couple hummingbirds and relaxed to the tranquil river sounds. Deb left us a special little gift as we were celebrating our anniversary too. The entire experience was great and we couldn't recommend this place enough. Thank you and we hope to be back in the future!
Wow, just wow. Hard to find words to describe this beautiful and private sanctuary away from the world, but close enough to explore parts of NH. We celebrated our 10 year wedding anniversary here and loved every second. The sound of the river, the setting, the artistic decor, the small details put in by the owner, and the added touches of a gift she even left for us are just a few reasons we were blown away. And for the person considering looking at reviews for sanitary purposes, it was SO CLEAN, & this is something for me when going away is something I put high value on. I never once felt dismayed by the appearance. The owner of this getaway location clearly puts so much TLC into this, & it’s easily observed during your stay. We also were able to enjoy things locally & found some amazing food. Since we only stayed for the weekend, we didn’t really want to have to cook, although the house came fully prepared if you wanted to. Not to mention the covered bridge!! within walking distance where we enjoyed morning coffee. Don’t miss out & book now. Pictures honestly didn’t do it justice.
As soon as you walk in the door calmness engulfs your body. It's so clean and comfy. Wonderful to hear the river while relaxing on the deck or hammock. Communication with Deb wad great. The keyless entry battery was dying and she came right over and changed it. We arrived late our first night and there was a perfectly needed little goodie bag on the table. It was so wonderful. The place was quiet, clean and decorated beautifully. We will definitely go back! Donna
My husband & I stayed for a few nights to get away and recharge while our kids were away at camp. Deb was an amazing host and the cottage was perfection. Even better in person than the pictures showed. The brook was so tranquil and the sounds of running water was like something that's played at a spa. We really enjoyed lounging around by the water, reading, puzzles and driving around exploring the adorable town of Sandwich and the surrounding area. We certainly hope to return!
Deb is exceptional and caring and we knew our stay would be great
