Welcome to Flying Squirrel Lodge, a cozy cottage nestled in the woods of Sherwood Forest Audubon Sanctuary. This single level (no steps!) 2 bedroom, 1 bath, home is located in the heart of all the area has to offer. The home does occasionally accept approved pets so if you have allergies, you may need to take this into consideration.

Rock your cares away on the front porch as you watch the light glistening on the surface of Trout Lake below and listen to the sound of the many birdsthat inhabit the trees around you. Walk down the hill to enjoy a dip in the clear, clean water or drop a line off the dock or the dam to try your hand at fishing. Within minutes, walk or drive to the quaint Robin Hood barn to attend picnics or to the Robin Hood Center to participate in floor exercises, listen to lectures by some of the many knowledgeable people who live in the Forest, or check out a book or video from the library. Make the short drive across the forest to the heated junior Olympic swimming pool where you can swim laps, participate in water aerobics, or just enjoy a leisurely dip in the sparkling water in season or play tennis or shuffleboard on the courts year round. An 18 hole, par 3 golf course fronts the Forest and is available to all for a modest fee. Hike the many miles of trails alone or with one of the docents who offer their knowledge and time to the people who live in or visit the Forest. An 8 mile drive brings you to the charming town of Brevard where you can wander the streets and visit the unique shops and galleries found there. Within minutes of downtown is the Pisgah National Forest with all the wonders it has to offer including waterfalls, nature centers, hiking trails, trout streams, and Sliding Rock where you can brave the icy waters for the slide of your life. Within a 30 mile range are 250 named waterfalls, 6 state and national forests, the famous Brevard Music Camp, the Biltmore Estate, and the charming towns of Hendersonville and Flat Rock, with the Flat Rock Playhouse and Carl Sandburg’s home.

While at home, enjoy the chestnut paneled great room by curling up on the double recliner sofa in front of a crackling fire in the corner stone fireplace. A galley kitchen opens over a counter so if you choose to cook, you can enjoy your family and friends at the same time. The bathroom contains a full size washer and dryer for your convenience. The first bedroom has a king bed and the second has twin beds for an alternative sleeping option. Find peace and tranquility in this little slice of heaven with a visit to Flying Squirrel Lodge.

We enjoyed our stay at the Flying Squirrel Lodge. It was comfy and cozy, with a nice view from the porch. The kitchen was well stocked for our needs and the bathroom heater came in handy on cold mornings. The neighborhood had nice trails and we saw deer multiple times. We did have problems with our Verizon cellphone service during most of the stay and could not use them until we drove about 10 minutes from the cabin. Other than that it was a convenient location for favorite hiking spots and nice restaurants in Brevard.

My problem was not have WiFi access for my arrival. We had no internet, no phone service for 1st 3 days. After several messages to owner we finally got the WiFi password on day 3. Why wasn’t WiFi password available in the house upon arrival. I was told to get messages and email from the internet. Well you can’t do that if you don’t have internet service (WiFi psssword).

My extended family held a week-long reunion with most members staying in Sherwood Forest outside of Brevard, NC. The Flying Squirrel Lodge is adjacent to a home my parents lived in for 30 years so it brought back a lot of wonderful memories. Apart from that, however, the Lodge is beautifully and very sturdily built, has a nice deck overlooking Trout Lake, has very functional kitchen, bath, and laundry facilities, was quite clean, and very easy to use in every way. Communications with the owner were prompt and excellent. The living/dining room is spacious, well appointed, and was able to hold 29 of us one night for a family dinner. Sherwood Forest itself has at least five lakes, a swimming pool and recreational facilities, many hiking trails and is beautiful! Our experience was outstanding in every way!

This was the second time we stayed at this cottage. The neighborhood is phenomenal and the lake is gorgeous. The walking trails are literally outside the back door. The cottage had everything we needed as our base of operations while we visited for our annual fly fishing trip. Will definitely stay again.

We enjoyed our stay, except Hurricane Helene happened and knocked power out. Neighbors with generators were very nice and helpful, even inviting us to stay. It was a freakish situation, flashlights plugged into wall worked but weather radio and flashlight in closet had old/no batteries. Neighbor gave us candles and we played scrabble. We were running out of food and managed to drive out after getting advice from someone at firehouse. One caveat: if you have dust/pet allergies, bring covers for furniture, which is upholstered. It’s a lovely setting with many walks and canoeing nearby. We didn’t have cell service even before the stirm. .

To quote Mary Poppins, Flying Squirrel is practically perfect in every way. We loved our stay and hated to leave. The porch is the best! While it rained much of our stay, we enjoyed sitting on the porch and listening to the rain. Kitchen is had everything we needed and the beds were comfortable. Hiking trails were right outside the door! We've been staying in Sherwood Forest for 20 years, and this is one of our favorite homes! We'll be back :)

My wife and I have stayed at the Flying Squirrel Lodge many times and we always enjoy it. The peaceful wooded setting is a great escape from the city. We also love that we can bring our Dachshund along for the trip. We enjoyed hiking to several of the waterfalls at Dupont State Forest.

This is the second year we are staying in the Sherwood Forest. Absolute stunning place. The Sherwood Forest is dense forest with a maze of streets winding through it. The house is very private and tucked away under the trees. Beautiful swimming lake within 100 yards of the house. If you want privacy and seclusion this is the place for you.

I stayed here with my wife and 5yr old son over Memorial Day weekend and had a great stay! The property is located in a beautiful wooded community, full of trails, singing birds, etc. despite being in a community, the trees isolate you from other homes so you feel like you're truly alone at a cabin in the woods. The cabin is exactly as pictured, and is very nicely stocked with about anything you'd want from spices, Tupperware & Ziploc bags, to towels, sheets and fans. You are only 15mins from downtown Brevard & Dupont Forest, so it's a convenient location. One thing to note, the roads winding through the community are only wide enough for one car leading to the cabin, so go slow and be prepared to move over for on coming traffic. Lastly, the location is a dark sky area and the community asks that all exterior lights are off by 10pm. Because of this (and there being no street lights), if you arrive after dark, it could be a challenge finding the driveway ? We had a wonderful time and would definitely stay here again! ?

My son and I planned a fishing trip in the area and wanted to stay somewhere that was private and scenic. This property was a perfect fit. The neighborhood is very quiet and well maintained. The lake is fantastic. The house was very comfortable and had everything we needed. Will likely stay here again.
