Brevard, North Carolina
Welcome to Flying Squirrel Lodge, a cozy cottage nestled in the woods of Sherwood Forest Audubon Sanctuary. This single level (no steps!) 2 bedroom, 1 bath, home is located in the heart of all the area has to offer. The home does occasionally accept approved pets so if you have allergies, you may need to take this into consideration.
Rock your cares away on the front porch as you watch the light glistening on the surface of Trout Lake below and listen to the sound of the many birds that inhabit the trees around you. Walk down the hill to enjoy a dip in the clear, clean water or drop a line off the dock or the dam to try your hand at fishing. Within minutes, walk or drive to the quaint Robin Hood barn to attend picnics or to the Robin Hood Center to participate in floor exercises, listen to lectures by some of the many knowledgeable people who live in the Forest, or check out a book or video from the library. Make the short drive across the forest to the heated junior Olympic swimming pool where you can swim laps, participate in water aerobics, or just enjoy a leisurely dip in the sparkling water in season or play tennis or shuffleboard on the courts year round. An 18 hole, par 3 golf course fronts the Forest and is available to all for a modest fee. Hike the many miles of trails alone or with one of the docents who offer their knowledge and time to the people who live in or visit the Forest. An 8 mile drive brings you to the charming town of Brevard where you can wander the streets and visit the unique shops and galleries found there. Within minutes of downtown is the Pisgah National Forest with all the wonders it has to offer including waterfalls, nature centers, hiking trails, trout streams, and Sliding Rock where you can brave the icy waters for the slide of your life. Within a 30 mile range are 250 named waterfalls, 6 state and national forests, the famous Brevard Music Camp, the Biltmore Estate, and the charming towns of Hendersonville and Flat Rock, with the Flat Rock Playhouse and Carl Sandburg’s home.
While at home, enjoy the chestnut paneled great room by curling up on the double recliner sofa in front of a crackling fire in the corner stone fireplace. A galley kitchen opens over a counter so if you choose to cook, you can enjoy your family and friends at the same time. The bathroom contains a full size washer and dryer for your convenience. The first bedroom has a king bed and the second has twin beds for an alternative sleeping option. Find peace and tranquility in this little slice of heaven with a visit to Flying Squirrel Lodge.

Great property in the forest with peaceful views to enjoy.
We enjoyed our stay .
well furnished. Nice and quite.
We stayed at the Sherwood Forest cottage for 5 days and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The cottage had everything you needed and more. Very quiet and somewhat secluded. We saw deer very close to our cottage and visited Trout lake on the property. . The cottage is about 7 miles from Brevard and no more than 5 mi les to Dupont state park. We enjoyed hiking the trails and seeing some of the waterfalls in the area. We will be back to stay.
We had a wonderful stay and really enjoyed the neighborhood's hiking trails, pool, and lovely views. The house was exactly as described and well stocked with everything you might need. Access to downtown Brevard and state parks was quick and easy. Highly recommend!
The house is very private tucked away in a forest. Beautiful view from the deck.
This was our third time staying at this cottage. We love the house and neighborhood. We hiked several of the Sherwood Forest trails and sat by the lakes. Amazing!
The house is just as described and very cozy. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again. As a previous person mentioned be prepared for a very narrow road once in the neighborhood. Also, if you are bringing a pet just know there aren't any grassy areas for them. I only mention it as our Puggle really likes grass.
This was our second time staying at The Flying Squirrel because we were so impressed with our first stay last year. It just keeps getting better. ?
Wonderful, clean, well supplied, in a beautiful area of Transylvania County. It is as you see on the website, we would stay again.
This beautiful, quiet, woodsy sanctuary is the perfect getaway. The cozy cabin is situated atop a hill with a view of Trout Lake. The owner is very conscientious and respectful as is the whole Sherwood Forest community. There are nearby stores and restaurants and the charming town of Brevard is 18 minutes away. Lots of great hiking trails!
Sherwood Forest is a very special place if you want a quiet getaway close to nature. We found no need to drive to Brevard, choosing instead to eat at local restaurants. Loved the local potteries as well. A bit disappointed as to no fish seemed to be found in any of community lakes. We will likely try to visit again.
Very nice property in the forest. Well stocked and definitely homey. A little notice about the roads approaching from the west, coming over the mountain, as well as the hairpin turns and single width lanes inside the neighborhood would have been appreciated. We know the area slightly but were still taken by surprise once IN the Sherwood Forest development. Otherwise, a very nice stay at a very nice property. We'd most likely come again, but maybe in a smaller vehicle.
We had a little difficulty finding the house but once we did it was great. The setting was nice, we were visited by deer every day and the trails were great. It was very cold while we were there but the house was nice and toasty. Everything was perfectly clean and in order. We hope to stay there again.
This was our second time here, feels like home! Very quiet secluded location, we love the trees and wildlife. Convenient for exploring western NC. We hope to be back next year!
Well equipped and nicely furnished cottage in Western North Carolina. Sally has supplied everything you need for a pleasant and restful short or long term stay in the beautiful Sherwood Forest just south of Brevard NC. Look forward to visiting again next summer. Thanks Sally
We loved staying at the Flying Squirrel! Everything you need is there - just pack your bags and go! Don’t think twice!! Sara was helpful and responsive. It was very clear that she cared about a good experience!
We enjoyed the quietness of this property. So many hiking opportunities.
What a perfect location - - a lake peeking at you through the trees, the burbling of a creek near by, zero traffic, trails and woods EVERY direction ... what a great way to explore what Sherwood Forest is all about! We loved the big front porch best of all - - no bugs, so sat out there ALL the time. Comfy kiing size bed with loads of pillows. Great hot shower and appreciated having our own washer/dryer. The cabin has an old time lodge feel and still has its 1970s (?) charm although all appliances are updated, which is appreciated. A simple 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom place but the living/dining area is quite spacious.
Wonderful, exciting, interesting experience. Hope to return soon. Sally is a super host, her thoughtfulness shows throughout the cottage in so many ways. Saw many birds, several deer, bunnies, lovely trees and flowers.
We enjoyed the peaceful environment of the ‘forest’. Went for lots of swims and a few paddles. Home was well equipped and tidy. Hope to return. Might need some pointers about navigating the neighborhood roads. We just went really slowww :) better to enjoy the beautiful flora.
What a special place. Everything we could ask for and more! Loved having coffee on the porch in the morning and watching the deer meander by. Great location. Especially loved the little produce stand/market just down the road. The Brevard historic downtown was wonderful too. Hosts were very responsive and easy to work with.
Comfortable, private. Nice place definitely recommend.
We love this cottage and community. Wonderful trails and small lakes. We were lucky to see flame azaleas in full bloom and saw the “blue ghost” fireflies at night.
A gorgeous setting, homey accommodations with all of the amenities you will need, and a location close to numerous waterfalls and hiking. Highly recommend and will definitely return in the future.
We loved our stay. The view was beautiful and the home was clean, very comfortable and everything was well stocked. Sally was a great host, very responsive. We would definitely come back again.
You could spend your entire stay here without ever leaving the neighborhood. Quiet roads to walk , many trails through the natural areas to hike, boats to paddle on the small lakes. So quiet and peaceful. Well supplied with everything you could possibly need, and very clean. Just as advertised. Great location for visiting all the parks in the area, several restaurants within a mile, Brevard about 15 minutes away. We will be back!
