The Chestnut House

The perfect place for you and your family to rest, unplug, enjoy novice trout fishing, and stargaze under the clean country sky.

Welcome to the Chestnut House. This recently renovated riverfront home is a blend of historic charm and modern elegance. Originally built in 1926 as a log cabin made of real chestnut, it has since been used as a US Post office, country market, and later a house in 1936. The home is nestled between the Cardinal and Little Priest mountains in the Blue Ridge Range and the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest.

The main attraction of the Chestnut House is the outdoors. Just a step away from the back door is the Piney River. Enjoy the sounds of this rushing river from the beautiful sundeck furnished with Adirondak chairs, or the picnic tables, rock fire-pit, or hammock. This two-story cottage offers scenic river and mountain views, a wood stove, chef’s kitchen, and sleeping accommodations for up to six guests. Open the windows and enjoy the sounds of the rushing Piney River and nature throughout the house.

A fun fact about the home: Growing on the side of the home facing the river is a very old, almost extinct, American Chestnut Tree. This is why we call it the “Chestnut House”.

Lastly, don’t forget your fishing rods! Native brook trout and wild brown trout populate the river.

This was singlehandedly one of the nicest vacation homes we have ever stayed as a family! The amount of detail, thought and care Maria put into this home was evident from the moment we pulled up to the house. From the little handwritten note they left us along with fresh eggs and bottle of wine, we immediately felt welcomed in the home. Every little thing we needed was taken care of, to include kids plates/cups, charcoal, toiletries, and even charcuterie boards! The outdoor space was probably our favorite. Even though the house was wonderful, we spent 90% of our time by the river teaching our kids how to fish, playing soccer, hanging out by the fire, or just taking in nature. I felt completely at peace in this home and we are so grateful for being able to enjoy this little oasis. Thank you for having us and we hope to be back soon!

We felt welcomed from the moment we arrived! The property is incredibly peaceful and calming. I loved sitting at the picture window each morning and having coffee while looking out at the snow covered landscape and the flowing water of the river! The decor and color palette used throughout are perfection. After a day exploring outside we loved coming in to cook warm meals and settle down by the fire at night. Would definitely consider staying again!

Place was clean, filled with everything you can possibly need and more. We celebrated my wife’s birthday there. And her luck would have it we had 5 inches of snow. So it was simply magical. This week, we had the pleasure of staying at Chestnut House, a charming property built in the 1920s, probably by my own great-grandparents. The experience was both relaxing and inspiring, offering a unique blend of historic ambiance and modern comfort. From the moment we arrived, the character of Chestnut House was immediately apparent. The architecture and original features, such as the exposed original log walls in the kitchen, wide moldings, and metal roof, transported us to another era while still feeling inviting and cozy. The house’s classic design created a warm, nostalgic atmosphere that made our stay truly special. The rooms were spacious and thoughtfully decorated, blending period details with comfortable furnishings. Large windows filled each space with natural light. We appreciated the modern updates in the kitchen and bathrooms, which made our stay convenient without detracting from the home's original character. Nestled in a quiet neighborhood, Chestnut House offered a peaceful retreat from the bustle of daily life. There are chairs, a hammock, and a fire circle near the Piney River, creating a sense of communion with nature. The combination of the home's history and the welcoming environment made it easy to unwind and create lasting memories. The house was extremely clean and included everything you need for a great stay. The hosts have outdone themselves!

This home is absolutely stunning. We felt as though we stepped in a modern design magazine shoot. The marriage of color, texture, and style perfectly complements the natural surroundings while maintaining a chic, contemporary vibe. The property is breathtaking, with a firepit, sprawling lawn, flowing creek, and fruit and nut trees. We loved being close to hiking in the George Washington and Thomas Jefferson National Forests, plus nearby wineries and breweries. In the evenings we enjoyed board games, cornhole, darts, and grilling under the stars—and best of all, we could bring our two dogs. Maria and Randy’s hospitality was unmatched. Let me start by saying Maria & Randy are easy to communicate with and will go above to make your stay amazing. The house & grounds are absolutely beautiful! My husband, my self, our pup & out foster pup had a wonderful time doing nothing for our 20th anniversary. We walked the grounds, sat by the creek, walked to the national forest, read a book or 2 & our pup LOVED the water. We loved when it rained with the tin roof, it just sounded peaceful. Everything you need is there & waiting for you! The only thing I wish we knew beforehand is that dogs are not allowed on the furniture(which is completely fine) but if you are like us & let your pups on the couches you will spend a lot of time yelling to stay off furniture. But other than that, it is totally worth it just for the quietness alone. Will definitely recommend to family & friends.

Gorgeous, peaceful setting in the middle of nowhere, which is exactly what we were looking for. We wanted to get away from it all, and Maria and Randy provided that opportunity. The house has been renovated beautifully, and someone has some great taste! I love all the green tones, wood, brick, and...oh, the velvet!Although the house is wonderful, including a full-stocked, high-end kitchen, I admit that I most sitting by the river and playing Frisbee with my family, as well as my solo strolls through the yard. (I didn't get one mosquito bite!)Oh, I need to mention that the beds are very comfy. My husband and I have backs that are very picky about mattresses and they were perfect!Bring some food staples with you (or go by the store on the way in) because this little house really is in the middle of nowhere...right at the foot of the George Washington National Forest. So restaurants and grocery stores are quite a hike, but when we ventured out to dinner, we were VERY HAPPY to spend some time at Bold Rock Nellysford Cidery! The cider, of course, is great (even the non-alcoholic apple cider), but the food is pretty darn awesome, too! They even prepared a beef patty for our dog (he gives it 5 stars!).We did spend one day exploring Wintergreen and another in Charlottesville, where we had a great lunch at Michie Tavern.I highly recommend staying at this amazing VRBO. We went during the summer, but I imagine it would be absolutely wonderful in the fall, too!

We absolutely loved our stay at this cozy cottage in the Virginia hills! It had everything we needed, and we were able to cook meals easily since everything worked perfectly. The owners were fantastic and even helped us celebrate our 6-year-old's birthday with a special treat. Just a small note for future guests: if you go for a walk and take a right out of the cottage, then another immediate right over the little bridge, you'll come across a house about a quarter mile down with some aggressive dogs. Just be cautious in that area or if you have small childrenor pets avoid it completely. Overall, we had a fantastic time and can't wait to return!

We were amazed with the extensive property and beautifully outfitted home. All areas were spotless including a shed and an outdoor barn space shockingly clean, all lawn was recently cut so we could make use of all the spaces in so many ways. Even the windows were like new and we could open windows and it was spotless not a bug in the screens. Can't express how clean the inside was, with lots of decor, games, books. I cooked a lot and the kitchen had every option you might need. Appliances seemed brand new. Huge dining room table. We also cooked over the fire pit using a tripod we brought and charcoal they had for the grill, and ate by the river, where we spent most of our time. With our dog we walked a couple miles on the gravel road into the national forest along the river and found much to explore there and blooming mountain laurel and rhododendron. We used this as a retreat while a family member is going through chemo for incurable cancer, and chose it due to it is closer than our home to UVA med in case of issues, it had the highest cleanliness rating, and we could feel like we were camping with our dog yet have a luxury lodging. We got that and more and can't wait to book another trip here. The communications were excellent. The chestnut tree is a treasure, the only place you'll ever see a mature American chestnut tree when it used to be one of the most common trees in the Appalachians. How it still lives when blight has made this tree extinct is a mystery.

I spent the weekend with my husband and our dog, and we had a wonderful time. Not only was this home beautifully decorated, but its placement next to the river was magical. There was enough space for my pup to run to his hearts content, and for us to sit around the yard just relaxing.

Looks even better in person. Wish we could've stayed longer. Maria had everything set out for us, and we didn't need to ask for anything. 10/10 would reserve this place again.

My wife and I have stayed in homes from Maine to California and always research our homes for location and comfort. The Chestnut house is the most well appointed and best decorated house we have rented. The location is ideal for a getaway in the mountains with the stream right below the house. Everything in the house is top notch quality. We were able to get to wineries on both sides of the Blue Ridge mountains with ease and a beautiful drive all of the days we were at the house. We so enjoyed our stay. From the moment we walked in the home, we were filled with beauty. The home was beautifully decorated…even had a cook’s dream kitchen. Then walking out back by the river was even more surprises and beauty. We will be back!

My husband and I absolutely loved our stay at this cabin. We always fly fish on the Piney River and watched this house get remodeled and loved the look of it once it was finished. We were so excited when we saw it listed as a VRBO rental and knew we needed to stay in it. The house was a dream!! The location is perfect, and it is so peaceful sitting out by the river. The house is so cozy, clean, and set up beautifully! The owners even had some things like spices, eggs, coffee grounds, and much more that was very helpful! We will definitely be staying again!

We visit this area every year and this was, by far, the best mountain cottage I have ever rented. The host was amazing and very hospitable. The communication with the host was top notch. We were greeted with a note, farm fresh eggs, and some local beer to try. The mountain and river views were beautiful and the front porch with rocking chairs was a great place to relax. Down by river, we relaxed in the hammock, sat on the deck, fished for trout, and took a quick dip in the nice, cold spring water. Inside the cottage was pure elegance with a farmhouse flare. I especially loved the kitchen. Another highlight was all of the beautiful reclaimed wood utilized throughout the house. We were there during a recent tropical storm and although the power went out, the generator kept everything running perfectly. I was so glad that the owners had the whole home generator in place. We will definitely come back again.

This property was clean, beautifully decorated and such a peaceful location. Maria added a lovely touch with a hand written note upon arrival including a bottle of wine and fresh local eggs! The river views were gorgeous, the perfect place to relax and get away for the weekend. Looked just like the pictures!

We had a great stay at the cabin. It's a fantastic location right on the Piney River, offering serene and picturesque views. The cabin is everything it says in the description and more. Beautifully refurbished with a charming rustic touch, it features modern amenities to ensure a comfortable and convenient stay. The interior is cozy and inviting, with every detail thoughtfully considered. The fully equipped kitchen, comfortable bedding, and ample living area made us feel right at home. The outdoor front patio was perfect for morning coffee, and nice fire pit for evening relaxation. While the proximity to the river allowed for peaceful nature walks and some fun fishing. Everything is provided for a comfortable stay, making it an ideal retreat for anyone looking to unwind and enjoy nature's beauty.

We had a wonderful experience on the Piney River! We stayed for a week and never felt the need to leave. Host Maria was fantastic—gracious, patient, and always ready to answer our questions. The cottage itself is a dream, offering all the amenities we could ask for while feeling like a home. The grounds were well-groomed and the access to the river was amazing. The cottage was well-stocked with everything we needed; it has a vibe of a boutique hotel. Checking in and out was a breeze. The setting was incredibly peaceful, making for a truly relaxing vacation. I can't offer enough praise for Maria, she is exemplary in every way as is the property. Highly recommend!
