Fennville, Michigan
The public beach within walking distance is open. The normal stairs have been ruined due to high water but there are still a set of stairs by the bathrooms that you use to go down to the beach. Oval Beach in Saugatuck and both beaches in South Haven are open.
Fern Hollow is an easy 7 mile drive to Saugatuck and was designed/built in 1980 in traditional Michigan-cottage style. Taking cues from old summer camps, Fern Hollow creates an atmosphere where guests can return to their youth and a time when they enjoyed 'camping out' with family and friends. Whether sitting around the campfire or the fieldstone fireplace, enjoying an outdoor shower, sleeping in the open air of the bunkhouse, or strolling the trails to the beach and playground, time spent at Fern Hollow is sure to relax the mind, sooth the soul, and return you to a time and place once cherished but not forgotten.
Worried about not having air conditioning There are tall trees surrounding the cabin so it's shaded. It’s very comfortable with ceiling fans, the double doors open and floor fans on, that really helps move the air with the screened in porch. While we do not have Cable TV or Wi-Fi at the cabin, cell phone service is good so you can use your phone and hot spots.
PLEASE NOTE: We are unable to do check-in/check-out on Saturdays as it's a very busy day for our cleaning crew. It is possible to make an exception if someone has already rented Saturday to Saturday and we need to fill in those dates. When requesting to book, please do not leave a night or two in between that will not be filled.
Fern Hollow was built by a seasoned local contractor who was nearing retirement and who welcomed the opportunity to build a replica of the building style he claimed 'he cut his teeth on' in the 1930's as a young carpenter. His experience and attention to detail show throughout the cottage in authentic elements such as a hand stacked fieldstone fireplace, French-doors, open-shelving, single-timber-hand-cut beveled window sills and a center-floor radiant furnace ideal for cool Michigan mornings.
Fern Hollow rests on 13 wooded acres and is perched on the highest ground. The cottage is nestled at the center of what was nine 100-yr old white (self-trimming) pine trees. In order to created what is traditionally referred to as the Seven Sisters that surround and protect a cottage, two of the old trees were removed, one of which was already broken in half. This stand of evergreens provide a unique 'whooshing' sound as the winds move through the pine boughs. This can be enjoyed by opening the 4 sets of French doors inviting the surrounding porch to become a part of the house creating the feeling of an open camp in the woods.
Fern Hollow has served as the epicenter for over 30 years of family reunions and many annual gatherings of old friends. Our cottage is being offered as a rental for the first time in its history.
We invite you to join in our history of spending summer days with loved ones, nature, and time.
A lively, rustic cabin- exactly as it’s advertised. My husband and two dogs loved it. Read the amenities so you aren’t surprised. No AC, wi-fi, or washer/dryer . Regardless, the beds are comfy, design is fabulous and the grounds are beautiful. We would rent again for sure!
Enjoyed our stay at the cabin, it had everything we needed, a short walk to the beach and a playground. Indoor shower didn’t have great water pressure, but the outdoor shower worked great. Issue with hot water during our stay was promptly resolved. Very unique property, we enjoyed the privacy, saw many deer from the cabin.
Very isolated and charming rustic cabin that needs lots of work to be highly marketable in VRBO portfolio. The sound of the freeway rumble nearby intercepts any serenity experience and the quietness of nature. Many outside tree lights were burned out in particular the light at front stair entrance. Rotten stairs at drive up need replacement. We experienced both inside and outside showers noting that the flow from shower head is weak because of rusted spray jets. Bed in outside sleeping room has a mattress weakly supported by the seat of a very small child’s chair. A heavy person causes the entire bed to seesaw. Unable to get TV to work by following directions provided. It would be nice if a map was provided for locating light switches, towels, silverware. The step from outside patio into kitchen is higher than normal and caused a member of the party to trip and fall. That rise should have a posted caution. Kindling wood was not stacked for welcoming use at either the inside or outside fireplace. Could not find the umbrellas. Are they provided? Trails are over rated and don’t lead to the beach. A novice could become lost in the woods quickly because of overgrowth and trail abruptly stopping. Actually enjoyed our stay with relatives who are conditioned to clamping.
We loved everything! Location, accommodation, quaintness. We had a wonderful time
We had a very nice time. Was very relaxing & short drive to most anything we wanted to do. Would stay again.
We had an amazing time at this lovely rustic retreat. We spent so much time just enjoying the property. It was easy access to all the things we wanted to do on our vacation. We loved having so much nature around us♥️
I enjoyed staying in this cabin, with it's beautiful trees. Very peaceful. Also, close to hiking, shopping, or just walking on the beach. Beds were comfortable, enjoyed the screened porch, loved walking the dogs in the woods on the property, and owners very responsive and accommodating with your questions. We loved it!
What an amazing and very private property! This place has a lot of space to explore the woods and really hang out with your friends and family. It also was a short walk to the beach if you want a completely different change of scenery. My friends and I hung out mostly around the fire at night and they were quick to respond about additional firewood when needed. The pictures online are hard to tell on sleeping arrangements but they were pretty separate and all had doors to close for privacy if/when needed. The beds were also very comfortable and allowed for a great night sleep. I went with my friends this time but would absolutely take my family back here to stay again.
I stayed here with my mother, aunt, sisters and cousins. It was a perfect ladies weekend in a perfect cozy cabin. The property is beautiful and the cabin is quaint and comfortable. We enjoyed walking the property and to the lake. We spent an afternoon shopping in Saugatuck and returned to the cabin for wine and a campfire after dinner.
The kitchen needed more supplies. No cloth to wash dishes. Yes to dry dishes. Pans had food sticking to them. Love the outdoors .
