Dolgellau, Wales
Sitting close to the heart of Dolgellau, with its pretty stone cottages and surrounded by mountains and rivers, this characterful cottage has all you need for a great holiday or short break whatever the time of year. Step in through the lounge door and you know that this cottage with its impressive inglenook fireplace has been a pace to stay and relax for many hundreds of years. The massive wooden beam was once part of a sailing ship and later saw people meet under it as a "Friends meeting house". Meyrick Street is an old residential street leading from the centre of this quaint and attractive market town, out past a winding river to the foothills of Cader Idris, South Snowdonia's most impressive mountain.
In and around Dolgellau there is no shortage of things to do and places to go as well as a great choice of venue's to eat and drink only 2 or 3 minutes walk away.
Our cottage Y Gelli (the grove) makes a great base for exploring Snowdonia. The town itself is the point at which several mountain rivers join together on their rocky route to the sea, only 10 miles away at the seaside town of Barmouth. Within a few minutes drive you will find beautiful mountain lakes that are great for fishing, walking and swimming in as well as messing about on in a canoe.
For walkers there is some of the most impressive walking country in Wales incl using Cader Idris, the Rhinog mountains, and the famous Precipice and Torrent walks. Stunning views are everywhere from the tops of mountains out to sea or along the beautiful Dovey and Mawddach estuaries and plenty of impressive waterfalls too.
You can bring your bikes to the cottage and store them in our garage or hire them locally then go out and explore the traffic free routes such as the Mawddach Trail as it winds to the sea alongside the Mawddach River or take your mountain bike to Coed y Brenin the National Mountain Biking centre with routes to suit all abilities.
If you want to relax by the sea or just paddle in the waves there are great beaches on the coast from Barmouth up to Harlech and its historic castle. Or you can visit the pretty welsh harbour town of Aberdovey. It is all within half an hours drive and waiting here for you to come and discover it.
Best of all you can do plenty from the cottage without the need for a car. Dolgellau has great transport links across North and mid Wales via the Traws Cymru (Cross Wales) network and on Saturday and Sunday these buses connecting you to Barmouth, Caernarfon, Aberystwyth, Bala and Llangollen are totally free for you and the whole family. They all give good connections to the national rail newtork at Barmouth and Machynlleth

We had a wonderful time in Dolgellau. Everything you might need - shopping, restaurants and pubs - was in easy walking distance. And even the hiking - our main reason for being there - could be started immediately at the doorstep, but of course there are lots of places to drive to for starting really great tours. The house itself is a beauty - it may be 400 years old, but all facilities (kitchen, bathroom) are up to date and in top condition. We would come back any time!
What a lovely cottage, which had everything you needed in it. Lovely little town with very friendly people and lits of places to eat and drink. Great communication with the owner Graham.
Had a great stay. Perfect location and nice cottage, well equipped, will be returning for sure.
Clean and tidy nice and cosy cottage we definitely stay again
Lovely stay and very cosy cottage, beds a bit uncomfortable, but that's just us l guess!!
Good for exploring the area and yet with lovely eateries on the doorstep
Great stay here . Lovely town with a nice selection of shops with fantastic restaurants. Nicely situated for exploring Snowdonia and close to one of the best beaches Barmouth.
Lovely locale, good parking, great town, but could be a bit easier on dog walkers (council, not landlord). Great places to eat and businesses are very dog friendly. House was top notch. Ver satisfied.
Lovely cottage, much bigger than it appears on the photos, amazing location for the town centre, parking great. Kitchen has a big oven and is perfect for self catering. Slight issue with the TV which wouldn't have mattered in the summer. Also hot tap in the bath was a bit intermittent. However, I would recommend the property and hope to stay there again sometime.
The cottage was amazing, my dream home. I could have stayed in and just enjoyed it everyday but there's so much to do out and about. Graham was excellent at keeping in touch with us and was on hand if we needed him (we didn't) you only need to bring food with you if you want to eat in, otherwise there are restaurants and pubs on the doorstep. Right in the centre of the village so only a stones throw from the pub, chip shop and all shops. The locals were very friendly and the village idyllic. I would definatly stay here again.
