The Neighborhood:

Hugging the Congaree River and stretching east, Columbia is a sprawling city with a history dating back to colonial times. Nicknamed the Capital of Southern Hospitality, Columbia is a welcoming, warm city -- it is also a college town, home to the University of South Carolina. The university is located downtown, covering over 359 acres. The historic, top-ranking university dates back to 1801, but the oldest structure in Columbia is the Seibels House, built around 1796. It currently serves as a house museum.

While there's plenty for college students to do, Columbia provides a variety of activities -- whether you're a golfer, a shopper, or a foodie. Kid-friendly activities are everywhere, from the gorgeous parks to the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. The downtown district provides a variety of shops and restaurants along brick-paved sidewalks, and the river and nearby lakes provide opportunities for boating and fishing. College sports fans head to Williams-Brice Stadium to cheer on the USC Gamecocks, and golfers can enjoy a game at Fort Jackson Golf Club. For camping, kayaking, bicycling, and hiking, nearby Sesquicentennial State Park provides 1,400 wooded acres and a large lake to explore.

Our home is located in West Columbia, SC in an area affectionately called “New Brookland.” West Columbia, or WeCo, is a vibrant neighborhood directly across the river from downtown Columbia. Minutes from West Columbia Riverwalk Park and Amphitheater, USC campus, Williams-Brice Stadium, and the South Carolina State House. WeCo has miles of beautiful riverside walking trails, delicious restaurants, the Riverbanks Zoo, and awesome beer gardens!

The New Brookland Historic District is the historical nucleus of the City of West Columbia. It emerged in 1894 as a planned residential community for operatives of the Columbia Duck Mill, one of the first hydroelectrically powered textile mills in the nation. The district is composed of approximately 20 early twentieth century commercial structures, the city’s historical business core, and the “Mill Village,” a 24 block residential area east of the old business district and overlooking the Congaree River. The community’s older names persisted until 1938 when the town name was changed to West Columbia. Listed in the National Register October 10, 1978.

Getting Around:

Columbia is a driving town with tons of parking everywhere. If you do not have a car, there are rideshare (Uber, Lyft, and Taxi) options which are easy to come by in our area. We provide free on-site parking at our home for vehicles.

The place is beautiful; the owners did a great job renovating and decorating. We had a good stay, although anyone renting this property should be aware that the wall between the two properties is thin, we could hear our neighbors well. Also, there are dogs that bark, not that that is the owner's fault. This is a great property if you rent both sides of the property for a larger group.

Great location and super cute. Looks just like the pics and had a sweet little welcome note with goodies when I arrived. Would stay again for sure. The only negative is the walls are super duper thin and if someone is staying in the unit next door, you can hear everything. It’s still a nice place, and there are even a few restaurants and antique shops close by. Lee was a great host and very communicative and helpful. Right across the river from downtown and very convenient. Enjoyed my stay.
