The Neighborhood:

The Village of Grand Traverse Commons, located one mile from downtown Traverse City, is formally known as The Traverse City State Hospital. In operation from 1885-1989, it was the third psychiatric hospital in Michigan. With its vast grounds of 135 acres of fruit trees, gardens, and farming livestock, all of which kept the institution fully self-sufficient. As of 2002, the Village of Grand Traverse Commons was established, reinventing and restoring the former hospital into a thriving hub for housing, gourmet restaurants, and boutique shops. With the properties scenic, vast landscape, hiking trails, and beautifully restored buildings preserving history, Kirkbride Hall is known for hosting events including weddings and receptions, concerts, fundraisers, along with hosting many community events throughout the year. Highly recommended is the Guided and Historic Building and Tunnel Tour hosted by The Village of Grand Traverse Commons.

The directions to find this unit are not clear. We understood garden level but walked around the entire building in the dark to figure out where to enter. The interior was all that two people needed. A very efficient use of space with a garden view of abandoned hospital buildings. One recommendation would be to have a cozier place to watch a movie.

No place to sit comfortably. Couch was a sleeper mattress with no back. Lighting was very dark for the evening and tv only got roju channels because we didn't have our own streaming. Had to take out our garbage but no unlocked dumpster so we had to take our garbage home with us.

I lived in Michigan for 50 years and have vacationed in Traverse City countless times and have always been interested in the State Hospital history and grounds. What a treat it was to be able to stay on site for a few nights. The Village is an amazing feat of restoration and should be a destination for all. The condo we stayed in was perfect-very clean, easy parking, comfortable sleeping arrangements, well stocked kitchen, linens, great host and all that stuff! We will definitely stay again!

I found that our stay here was conveniently located near town, you can walk to so many eateries and shops within the villages campus. AC and ceiling fan worked great, beds were comfortable, and I really liked the patio sitting area in the evenings.

The property is in a great location to explore Traverse City and the penninsulas. Plenty of places to walk to in the Commons, just check the closing times. The condo is small but perfectly sized for a few people. It's also very quiet. The bedroom has a sliding door and the windows that are at street level have coverings for night. If you're looking for a place to store your bags and rest your head after a day of shopping and wine tasting, this is a great place to do it!

Nice condo. Great location in the Commons. Very clean on arrival. Convenient parking. Kitchen had everything we needed for cooking. Comfortable bed. The only downside was it being at ground level, so no privacy from the street.

This was the perfect place to stay for a short work conference that I attended in the area. Nicer than a hotel room and loved being able to walk around the beautiful property. The condo was very clean and easy to access with the lock box.

We had been to the restored Asylum location before to wander around and have dinner, and we decided to stay there next time we went up north. This unit was VERY clean, very nicely decorated. The A/C units work great, and the kitchen is very nice. VERY QUIET too! Communication excellent...we would stay here again for sure. Many thanks for having us! Kim & Perk

Almost surreal mix of modern, historic, and natural all in one location at the Grand Traverse Commons. There's so much to soak in you don't even need to leave the property. This condo is perfectly centered in it all, and was so comfortable it was hard to leave

This apartment is part of a huge renovation that is located near downtown TC and it also has some excellent coffee shops, bakery and restaurants (Stella’s is fantastic) right there. Our apartment was clean and as pictured. We will definitely return!
