NEW VACATION RENTAL! Private 5 acre forested, hillside retreat overlooking Tomales Bay and the hills of West Marin, just a few minute walk to historic Inverness town through a private trail. Great for larger family event or very special stay for a couple or group of friends. The “Oaktopia Refuge” is nestled amidst the oaks of the Inverness Ridge and is surrounded by parkland of the Pt Reyes National Seashore.
A chalet and 2nd cottage have an Old Inverness Charm and a warmth that will either compel you to spend your time relaxing on site, or serve as a welcome refuge after a day of hiking; swimming; boating; biking; bird-, seal-, whale-, and elk-watching; oystering; or simply sightseeing. Oaktopia Refuge is located 5 minutes from historic Pt Reyes Station, with its bookstores, local artisans, and restaurants; is just minutes to the hidden and not-so-hidden beaches of Tomales Bay; and is perfectly located for easy access to all the jaw-dropping hiking trails and Pacific Ocean beaches of Pt Reyes National Seashore.
The 2 story chalet has a front entrance that overlooks a deck, a lily pond, and the Inverness Ridge. The backside of the chalet has sliding paned wooden doors that open to a hot tub and classic views of Tomales Bay. The ground floor also has a full kitchen, dining area, propane-powered hearth, pullout couch and a piano. The upstairs is a slanted-roof, open-loft area with 2 full beds, and can also house a child’s bed (sleeps 5-6 comfortably).
The cottage, available for only an extra $150/night (except in high season), has a rustic, tasteful wooden interior, wood-burning and electric furnaces, a full kitchen, a main room with queen bed and dining area, a bedroom with a double futon on a frame, and a deck with a gorgeous view of the bay (sleeps 3-4 comfortably). There also is a separate wooden shingled studio that can be used for a yoga or meditation space, as a game room, or as an art studio, or a fun sleeping cabin for kids in the summer. While Oaktopia Refuge is perfect for couples and friends, it is also child and family-friendly, with a swing-set, a swinging hammock as well as a large stone patio for basketball or badminton.
Only 1 hour from Golden Gate and Richmond Bridges. We invite you to come stay in this unique and special retreat – for just a weekend to re-charge , or for a full week or 2 to really get to know the extraordinary natural wonder and cultural treasure that is Pt Reyes National Seashore. Lovely property - though very close to Inverness it is secluded and private. Both homes are quite charming (great rugs and decor), a few quirks, but all were expected and the owners were very helpful and readily available for any questions. Trickiest part was setting up hot tub, lots of instructions to follow for properly mixing chemicals, but easy enough and we’ll worth it! Property exceeded expectations. It was a magical space for a mini-retreat weekend. I would highly recommend this space for friends or family gatherings. Thank you, Dean!
Our family of nine enjoyed our stay in this charming, rustic cottage in Inverness. The setting is beautiful, on a wooded hill with a view out over Tomales Bay. The main cottage was comfortably-furnished, with lots of room for us to spread out, and a wonderful collection of games to play in the evenings. Some of our group slept in the smaller cottage, a few steps from the chalet. The kitchen is small, but we cooked simple meals on the little gas range and had fun sharing the dish-washing duties. The property is convenient to all the beaches and hikes in the area, and a short drive to the stores and restaurants in Pt Reyes Station. We had a lovely time and especially enjoyed cozy evenings in the comfortable living room, warmed by the gas-fired cast-iron stove. The owner was very helpful and accommodating.
Dean and Ariella's home is beautiful and quiet. Lots of light, warm hardwood floors, a gorgeous view of Tomales Bay, and a lovely hot tub (although figuring out chlorine and PH levels was a little challenging for the novice). Ariella was very responsive and helpful. The one drawback was the upstairs bed. It was comfortable, but I forgot how narrow a double (as opposed to a queen size) is, and my wife and I both bumped are head several times on the sloping ceiling on both sides of the bed. Perhaps it's not a challenge for the better coordinated. If you go, seriously consider dinner at the nearby Saltwater Oyster Depot....it was amazing!
We thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing weekend in Oaktopia - surrounded by nature, with inspiring art and stunning views.
We loved our stay at oaktopia and in Inverness. The cozy and treetop-feeling home was great for hanging out and playing games in and also a perfect launchpad for hiking, swimming, and other adventures. We loved swimming at Shell beach and running around at McClure's beach by tómales point, where we hiked and ran on the trail to see the elk. Had a great night eating dinner at the house and another with delicious pizza in PT Reyes station. The views from the house are beautiful and the hot tub is an amazing way to start and end the day. We had family in the cottage too and it was a perfect layout for our two families to be together but with a little space (we have kids and they don't!). Dean was very communicative and helpful from booking through our stay and everything clear and easy. The open floor plan is beautiful though be prepared with a toddler to make things work with noise etc for sleeping and also for stair climbing. Our kids loved the swings, finding banana slugs, and all the great board games. Definitely recommend!
We had a fantastic stay with a group of 8 grad school friends. Gorgeous property with plenty of sleeping space and great views. Really enjoyed the hot tub and the location in general, tons of great hikes and walks nearby. Owners were really friendly and super responsive. Would absolutely recommend!!
Nice little cabin and cottage. The location was great. Enjoyed Shell Beach and the trip to the lighthouse. Dean was helpful and responsive. There is a small beach across the road from the driveway.
It was everything we needed.
Inverness is a playground for me. I can think of a dozen things I want to do right when I drive into town. Yet, when I arrived in Oaktopia, I suddenly felt like I didn't need to go much of anywhere. The view encompasses so much of lovely Tomales Bay and the hills beyond. The towering trees are a feast for the senses. The homes are appointed with everything you need, if not everything you want. Go ahead. Settle in.
What a beautiful, unique setting for my birthday weekend gathering of close friends and family. The two cottages are furnished and filled with love, care, and hospitality, and the property has both cozy, wooded seclusion and a wide open view onto Tomales Bay (especially enjoyable from the backyard hot tub). We enjoyed cooking together in the well-appointed kitchen (note that the stove/oven is smaller than standard size) and sharing meals around the generous dining table. Special features - the piano, the mini basketball patio, the swing set - add to the warmth and character of this clearly beloved vacation home. There's a nice balance between craft and design vs rustic, natural beauty: the papyrus shading the pond, the woodwork amid the woods - it's quintessential West Marin charm. And just like a previous renter/reviewer, on my first night we caught sight of a fox strolling through the backyard - maybe he's a regular! We also saw a pair of deer, a bald eagle, several hawks, and at night, heard a chorus of coyotes. It was one of the most special getaways I've ever had. I hope to have the good fortune of returning to this beautiful place, one day soon.
