Stirling, Scotland
2.5 miles from Aberfoyle, nestled in the heart of the Queen Elizabeth Forest this 500 year old tower house with connections to Rob Roy has been fully renovated. It now offers comfortable accommodation with en suite bathrooms to each bedroom. With renewable biomass heating system Duchray Castle is the perfect cosy get away! Guests can enjoy the beautiful estate, sit with a good book by the fire or alternatively explore all there is to offer in the local area of Loch Lomond and Stirlingshire.
Duchray Castle has 4 spacious bedrooms.
Bedroom 1 - King size 4 poster bed - this room has views over the Estate and beyond to the lake on one side and down the valley on the other along the river Duchray Water. The room is reached up the original stone spiral staircase and with its full bathroom takes the entire space of one side of the Castle. The bathroom has a huge shower as well as a large bath and double sinks.
Bedroom 2 - with very comfortable zip lock bed this room can be a super king or twin. The views are both down the valley and to the Lake. The ensuite bathroom has a large bath with shower above it.
Bedroom 3 - this is a twin room with views down to the river also an en suite bathroom with bath and over bath shower
Bedroom 4 - This tower bedroom is on up the second spiral staircase to the top! Another double bedroom with en suite shower. This room also has wonderful views to the valley below and the river. It does have slanted attic ceilings so is not for the tallest guests.
Kitchen - There is a large family kitchen which is well equipped and has a table for informal dining for 6 comfortably or 8 at a squash. Off the kitchen there is an additional summer room with wonderful views but this really is a summer space as it has too much glass to be heated practically during the winter.
Dining room - original vaulted dining room. This wonderful room has seen many happy parties, with its large fire and lots of candles it is a great space where meals turn into debates, turn into memory making nights of discussion by the fire!
Great Hall - Another big space with its fire and views, to play games and chat.
Welcome Hall - right in the centre of the castle this cosy room, with its fire, is well stocked with books, games and DVDs for splinter groups who would like to chill on the sofa.
Gardens and Estate. Duchray sits in 80 acres of its own Estate surrounded by woodland and quiet. There are walks along the river and through the woods up the small stream as well as the hedge garden which is like an outdoor room of its own. The flowering season goes through thousands of daffodils from March through carpets of bluebells then the spectacular Rhododendrons and Azaleas. The woods are full of blueberries and mushrooms for those who like to forage and for anyone who enjoys a bit of star gazing we have no light pollution!
We have a 5 night minimum stay policy and our most common comment is that people wish they were staying longer!
Beyond the Castle the area has much to give with walking, cycling, golf, whisky distilleries etc within easy reach.
For larger groups we also have The West Wing at Duchray Castle and The Lodge at Duchray Castle. The West Wing sleeps up to 4 guests in a double and twin with a shared bathroom and The Lodge sleeps up to 5 in a double and family room for 3 also with a shared bathroom. With all 3 properties we have the capacity to host 17, can re arrange our vaulted dining room to seat the entire group and there is plenty of space for everyone to entertain together in the Great Hall. All the properties have equipped kitchens and dining areas giving the additional advantage that if family or mass fun all feels too much it is very easy to disappear back into a smaller space for a while!!
We hope our guests will enjoy staying at Duchray where they can be King of their own Castle for a few days, unwind from the hustle and bustle of their everyday lives, breath the fresh air, and listen to the quiet. They can return home with a new wealth of memories made and shared.
Duchray Castle was our base for touring Scotland the 2nd week of a 2-week trip to England & Scotland over Christmas and New Year’s, respectively. We could not have made a better selection for our family of 8 (husband & myself, 3 adult children + 2 spouses, & 18 month grandson). The castle itself is beautifully renovated and updated with much attention to detail and thankfully heated to perfection! Checkin was easy and everything was spotless and ready for us upon arrival. We were greeted by a fully decorated Christmas tree and bottle of Champagne ready for our New Year’s toast, both of which made us instantly feel so welcomed. The rooms are all furnished with care and comfort of guests in mind and the en-suites with their high-end fixtures & well-equipped kitchen were greatly appreciated after full days of long hikes and sight-seeing. The castle is a real castle with its interesting history associated with Rob Roy on a beautiful estate in the heart of Scotland, making a perfect base for exploring the local area and also short drives to Stirling, Loch Ness, Fort William/Ben Nevis, Edinburgh and so much more. Having toured Scotland many times, we had looked forward to introducing the rest of our family to its particular beauty & historic sites. Duchray Castle was the ideal venue for it! Many thanks to Amy for making us feel so at home and welcomed. And to Dana and your family helping us feed the coos! Do not hesitate to book Duchray— but please keep it our secret;^)
An impressive place with a rich history. The Castle is spacious and beautifully furnished and the setting and grounds are lovely. The inside of the Castle is extremely comfortable and contains a modern kitchen, updated bathrooms and other nice amenities. The Castle was a perfect get away for my wife and I and our son, daughter in law, and our four grandchildren. Our grandchildren loved the property, hiking through the woods, riding the zipline, and collecting eggs from the chickens. The adults also had a wonderful time. Our family will have a wealth of memories from our stay at Duchray Castle. A great Scottish experience. As others have commented, it would be hard to top this experience and we definitely want to return! Kevin K Lakeland, Florida USA
Very peaceful, and just an incredible property! Highly recommended, and we all look forward to coming back.
Castle is remote enough to enjoy trails, bird, lovely gardens and quiet-but close enough for shopping and pubs. Duchray Castle had plenty of room, gorgeous kitchen, sweet chickens providing breakfast and lovely hairy coos. Family had a great time and we highly recommend for family getaways!
I can’t fault this place which was the best of some amazing places we have stayed. The castle is beautifully appointed yet somehow friendly and welcoming. There is a surprise and a special touch in every room. We dined, walked the river, collected eggs and admired the cows. The kids swung and ran and played games. Everyone had just the best holiday.
We had a family reunion at the castle and it was just perfect. My husband and I met up with our daughter, her husband and their three little children for a 6-day holiday. We also had a friend come and join us for a couple of nights. The castle is really great to stay in - it looks good (stylish) inside and is very comfortable. The bedrooms are reached by stone spiral staircases - one for each turret - which the 4 & 6 year old loved! The land is perfect for children to explore - chickens, highland cows, goats, a tyre swing, games room, river, etc. Also, within an hour's drive there are lots of other things to do - Stirling Castle, Wallace Monument, Sea Life, etc. We just had a wonderful time. I hope we revisit some day.
This was probably the highlight of our trip - staying in a wonderful, unique castle. We felt immersed history while enjoying all the modern conveniences of updated bathrooms, kitchen, tvs & wifi. The castle was very clean and beautifully furnished. The grounds were fun to explore and the game room was enjoyed. It would be hard to top this experience!
Our family loved staying in a REAL castle. The host family was very friendly and helpful for our stay. Stunning views and plenty to do on the property. Hope to stay here again!
This castle exceeded our expectations. Completely private location in Queen Elizabeth Forrest. Our teenage kids loved it- some much to explore. We enjoyed family game night by the fire in the evening. Perfect!
A historic scottish castle surrounded by national park of 80 acres...with fresh eggs and chickens. Updated where it counts (bathrooms), traditional everywhere.
Perfect well equipped accomodation for a group of 8, ideal for entertaining, relaxing and exploring. Grounds were spectacular and full of colour. Would definitely recommend and return.
