Buchanan, Virginia
The Squirrels Nest is a quaint, historic log cabin overlooking the James River in Buchanan, Virginia. It is available as a vacation rental with a two (2) night minimum stay. There are three bedrooms and two baths and can accommodate up to six (6) guests. Bedroom 1 has a double bed, Bedroom 2 has a queen bed and Bedroom 3 has two twin beds. The Kitchen is fully equipped and there is a large flat screen TV in the living room. Covered picnic area at the rear of the property overlooking the river and Town of Buchanan.
The Squirrels Nest is located near many local attractions that are within walking distance such as Antiques shopping, the swinging bridge, fishing, canoeing, tubing and kayaking on the James River. Other attractions not too far away include The Natural Bridge, Safari Park, and Zoo. The Blue Ridge Parkway, Appalachian Trail and numerous hiking or biking trails. We are located thirty minutes from Downtown Roanoke and Downtown Lexington.
The property is quaint and somewhat nostalgic to an era gone by. Love the proximity to outdoor activity; however, this trip was all about getting away. I would suggest improving the shower head downstairs, as well the garbage disposal in kitchen. Even with just suds and water it backs up pretty easily. We could not get the gas fireplace to work. Interested in coming back in the warmer times...
The Squirrel's Nest is a charming, well-appointed historic cabin with modern additions and conveniences. My in-laws thoroughly enjoyed their stay, although they did comment on the busy-ness of the store across the road. The final cost at approximately $243 per night (for 3 nights) is a bit too pricey for this area of Virginia - particularly for just 2 guests who used just 1 bed - which is the only reason I didn't rate it the full 5 stars. Nonetheless, I highly recommend!
We had a great stay at the Squirrel's Nest (thankfully, no sign of them in the house.) Three bedrooms and two baths were perfect for we three fisherman. Enjoyed the river and the historic town. Highly recommended!
A charming cottage with everything we needed to be comfortable. The town was welcoming and the area is quite beautiful. The host, Faye, is lovely and very attentive (our TV remote needed batteries and she quickly took care of it?). We will definitely want to book again.
Very comfortable and cozy. Had every thing we needed for a 3 day visit to VMI.
My new husband stayed here with his son and girlfriend the night before our wedding. He loved it. Right in town near restaurants and shops. Thank you!!
Interesting historical log cabin, built out with extra rooms, on the banks of the James River. Sadly, the experience wasn’t as wonderful as the listing. With a little bit of work, this could be a 5-star property. 1. We were so excited to be able to relax while watching the lazy river flow by. Unfortunately, there was a very steep drop off from the backyard to the river bank with no way to safely get down to the bank. Additionally, the weeds were so high at the top of the drop off, we couldn’t even see the river. 2. The upstairs bed was pushed tight against the wall, so one person would have to climb over the other to get into or out of bed. We opted to sleep downstairs for access on both sides of the bed. Unfortunately, the basement is home to many spiders. Unnerving to find them in the drawers, closet, and every corner. Please, at least sweep the cobwebs and dead insects from the corners. 3. We found the oven didn’t heat on our first day. I spoke with the owner and she was expecting a replacement part that day or the next. She agreed to text me when the part came, but I didn’t hear back for the remainder of our 5-day stay. 4. Use caution on the basement stairs. They’re fashioned in somewhat of a u-turn. The lower stairs are much shallower with a section cut out of the top tread. I slid down the stairs and injured both feet and my shoulder. Other than that, It’s a really cute place! And kudos for having a Brita pitcher in the fridge. Very appreciated!
We stayed in town for a softball tournament and the house was perfect for our group. Home was very clean and comfortable! The guys enjoyed walking down to the river and fishing between games. It was a fun weekend!
We stopped here on our way to NC for our summer vacation, we went to the Safari which was really fun. My biggest complaint was the oven did not work, I did email immediately once I noticed with no reply at all. The bed on the main floor needs to be replaced ASAP the mattress is the worse I have ever slept on. Other than those two complaints the place was as described.
Close to downtown and family.
This is a cute little cottage! We stayed for 2 nights but could have easily stayed a few more days. There was one bed / mattress that could be updated as it made quite a bit of noise. The kitchen was well stocked and the menus left on the refrigerator were greatly appreciated! We did attempt to contact the hosts regarding water under the kitchen sink but did not receive a return call. If we travel this way again we would definitely return!
Very clear directions made it easy to find. Clean interior. Comfortable rooms. Nicely stocked kitchen. Plenty of clean linens. Owner stopped by to offer a friendly welcome. Only issue we had was with the exterior door lock so we exited through front door upstairs. That was a minor inconvenience. Do note that this property does NOT have river access but you can access by walking or car. We would not hesitate to recommend.
We enjoyed our stay. The cabin was clean and had everything we needed for our short stay.
This is a great cabin in a great location. A very short drive to a beautiful downtown with plenty of food, music, and outdoor venues. This property overlooks the train tracks and the James River, as well as the weekend we stayed there was a civil war re-enactment right across the river that we were able to watch, overall a great property and a great weekend
Working with the owner was extremely smooth and pleasant. The home was located in perfect symetry with town and my family. The house looks extremely small outside but has so much space inside. Very homely and perfect. If you are looking for a nice place in the mountains to relax and take in the scenery, this is the perfect place to be… Will definitely stay again!!
Wasn't what we expected. We were hoping for a cabin with nearby fishing. This is an older home on a main road about a mile from a fresh water shallow part of a river.
The cabin was clean and had all the towels and linens you could need. The kitchen had everything you needed to make your own meals if that’s what you wanted. The outside seating needed to be cleaned between stay’s or at least cover the seats so the insects stayed off. The listing shows the river and the map shows the property going to the river but there is no view of the river. After staying there I understand no access because of the slope down to the river. A view would be nice if possible but if not possible then mention it in the listing. Faye the owner is happy to help if anything comes up. Overall I would recommend it to anyone who wants to see the sites the area has to offer.
The squirrels nest was perfect for what we needed! Thank you for a wonderful stay!
served the purpose
It was a great location between natural bridge for all the zoos (which we loved) and roanoke where we went on a raining day to the 2 story mall. The cabin was great and had everything we needed, great view of sunset. Waking distance to the water and swinging bridge
We stayed the weekend at the Squirrels’ Nest so we could kayak parts of the upper James that were a longer drive from home. The location was great and the home was was clean and comfortable, perfect for our group of 3 couples.
Lots of fresh towels, ideas for things to do, friendly town.
We stayed in Buchanan which is an hour away from Liberty University. Although it was a distance away, it worked well. An another note I loved the mountains around the property!
It was fun. Nice little place. Road was noisy but nice.
