"Into the forest I go... to lose my mind and find my soul." -John Muir
Ideal for couples or families!
Incredible cabin nestled in the center of 70 very private acres. Relax and unwind under incredible stars and listen to the night sounds of frogs, crickets, owls, and sometimes coyotes.
Close proximity to James River and tubing, UVA, and many wineries. You won't see any neighbors but you will see millions of stars and gain the serenity that can only come from unplugging from the world for a few days. There is WiFi but no cable, and (unless you have Verizon or Sprint) limited or no cell signal.
Feels remote yet only 20 minutes away from all that Charlottesville has to offer!
Cabin is conveniently located in the heart of the Virginia wine, beer and cider trail. While many popular attractions await you, most guests decide that returning to the cabin is the highlight of each day.
You begin to feel it from the moment you turn down into the driveway and meander by the grazing sheep entering the valley where a spring-fed pond gently gurgles as you pass through the canopy of trees shot through with shafts of sunlight. Subconsciously at first, you inhale a little deeper and then exhale just a little slower than usual. The bustle of life begins to fade as nature envelopes you. Crossing over the creek and heading upwards to Serenity Hill, you are greeted by big sky and open fields. As the driveway makes its final bend, H’Owl at the Moon Cabin unfolds.
The corners of your mouth tip upward. Your shoulders rise an inch. Do they seem lighter already Can’t be…. But then you get out of the car and step into the magic of Serenity Hill and the warm, inviting cabin. You’re on vacation and yet, somehow, you’ve come home. You were meant to be here. Before you know it, you are under her spell.
It’s the place to inspire dreams and make memories; the place to appreciate family and love; the place to restore your balance as a part OF nature, not apart FROM nature. H’Owl at the Moon is an optimal place to clear the mind, restore the soul, and inspire the heart. Find your strength and your center again. Regroup and recharge.
Everywhere you look, regardless of the season, you have company in the form of natural beauty – from the active peep frog colony in late Winter to the hummingbirds and butterflies of Spring; from the newly arrived fawns signaling Spring through the flowering fields and firefly soaked evenings of Summer; from the night sounds of owls and coyotes in Fall to the ground nesting birds of Winter: H’Owl at the Moon beckons -- its cabin offering a central respite from which to allow your mind to quiet and your soul to open.
The cabin at H’Owl at the Moon is an authentic log home on nearly 70 acres in beautiful Albemarle County, Virginia. A year-round creek borders the entire eastern side of the property with many small pools and waterfalls. Mowed footpaths cross the fields and provide easy access to walking trails in the forest and a world of exploration. A large freshwater spring-fed pond offers 24 hour entertainment whether it's sunning and swimming in it yourself or just watching and listening to the bullfrogs do it.
The cabin has excellent outdoor living spaces that bring nature up close. A covered front porch offers a shady spot to relax in the morning with coffee and a full-length back deck on the sunny side of the house offers two BBQs and a picnic table with umbrella. There is also an all-season fire pit with four Adirondack chairs – a perfect place to find anchor as you lose yourself in the sea of night sky as it opens a panoramic view of darkness and splendor.
Inside offers surprising space and luxury. The front door opens to a vaulted great room with beautiful pine floors, tongue-and-groove wood ceiling, exposed beams, and a wall of windows that displays the natural beauty outside. The centerpiece of the great room is a two-story, semi-round window to brighten the space. The kitchen is ready for real cooking. It is fully stocked with quality pots and pans, bake ware, cookie sheets, serving dishes, plates, utensils, wine glasses, etc. The pantry has a fairly extensive spice selection and basic staples.
Other amenities include soapstone countertops, a six-burner gourmet gas range/oven, Keurig coffee maker, large refrigerator with ice maker, microwave, toaster, measuring cups and spoons, mixing bowls, and food storage containers.
The master suite in the loft is warm and inviting. It features wood floors with oriental rugs, a walk-in closet, a sturdy king bed frame made from repurposed barn wood and a plush memory foam pillow top mattress, a spacious private bath with twin vessel sinks and separate shower. The loft also features a cozy chilling area with a TV and DVD player and sofa (along with my epic selection of movies).
The first floor also has a cozy bedroom with two pillow top twin beds and its own private bath featuring a 16” rain shower.
H’Owl at the Moon also has a top of the line amp and speakers connected to a record player along with a collection of classic vinyl and a Bluetooth adaptor for streaming from your phone or tablet. Bring your own, or check out something from our collection of DVDs, books, and records.
We want your stay at H’Owl at the Moon to be as relaxing as possible. That starts with eliminating things to pack. The cabin is thoroughly stocked with bath towels, hand towels, wash cloths, dish soap, body soap, shampoo, conditioner, hair dryers, toilet paper, paper towels, first aid kit, dishwasher detergent, etc. Beds always have freshly laundered sheets, and there are varieties of pillows and blankets to satisfy various preferences stored in the closets. H’Owl at the Moon Cabin is a rare blend of rural tranquility with pampered luxury. It offers all the privacy and solitude of a mountain retreat without giving up any of the comforts of home. We invite you to come and experience its magic.
*** Note that this listing is 'pets considered' please do not send a booking request without first sending an inquiry. I need to know the type and number of pets prior to booking. I don't charge a pet fee but am selective about the number and type of pets I will allow.
*** The stuffed bears you see in cabin were both rescued from a trash pile. I figured that rotting in a garbage heap was about the worst fate for them so I rescued them and brought them to the cabin where we can honor their spirits.
*** There are security cameras on property. They are all external only and there are no cameras or recording devices inside the cabin. The external cameras will be disarmed during your stay (they are only there to monitor the property when the cabin is unoccupied and will be rearmed upon your departure)
My husband and pup came for the long President's Day weekend to slow down in seclusion for a little. The house was perfectly clean and well equipped. We weren't without anything we needed. My husband brought his mountain bike and enjoyed the trails on the property as well as a long morning ride at Walnut Creek Park. I relaxed by the wood stove and read. :-) We went to James River Brewing and enjoyed the atmosphere of the local brewery. We had such an amazing time! Bill was great to work with and it's always wonderful to find a spot where our dog is welcome. He loved roaming and sniffing in the great outdoors! This trip was definitely planned for him!
Our stay at H’Owl at the Moon was absolute perfection! The cabin was beautiful and well equipped. We loved the wood burning stove and outdoor fire pit! Cooking in the gourmet kitchen was a dream and the views were spectacular. We (and our dogs) throughly enjoyed the on-property hike that Bill recommended (especially when we got to see the breathtaking waterfall). Not only was the property phenomenal, but Bill was extremely helpful prior to and during our stay. He provided lots of information and suggestions to ensure that our stay was perfect. We will absolutely be back!
H’Owl at the Moon farm has become our go to place to stay in Charlottesville. The property itself transforms us immediately into family-relaxing time and it’s close enough to c’ville and the University that we don’t feel far away from the action of sporting events and all that c’ville has to offer! Win-Win! Thanks, Bill for your continued warm hospitality and comfy house in the middle of no where! See ya again soon.
Loved our stay at the beautiful H'Owl at the Moon log cabin! Only regret....didn't stay more than two nights! Bill was such a pleasure to book through and so helpful with our questions before, during, and after our stay. The log cabin has everything you need for a chance to relax and unwind and take in the abundance of nature that surrounds this property. We also loved that we could cook any meal right in the cabin as it was fully furnished with all you need to grill out or cook in. We enjoyed hiking the trails with our small dog Batman and exploring the many wooded but well maintained areas around the property. At night we made a fire in the fire pit and roasted marshmallows. By day we had wine club pick ups at local area vineyards which was very convenient. We even had a chance to take in a couple new vineyards that we had never visited which was fun! Highly recommend a stay at H'Owl at the moon! Cannot wait for a return visit :)
This property was amazing. We were fortunate enough to experience it during the peak of the fall leaves and it was absolutely stunning. I loved the direct access to trails and how dog friendly it was. Even our two year old had a blast. The only thing we failed to realize was that the master bedroom is a part of an open loft. It worked out fine but if traveling with another couple and wanting privacy just make sure you note that :)
Second time we have stayed at the farm. It is wonderful. From the setting to the lovely home. We will be back again! Bill is a fantastic host.
We loved the cabin. It was a little piece of heaven. Very relaxing. We will be back!
If you want to unplug then this is the perfect place to do it. There is no cable, no internet....just a beautiful property on the top of a mountain. Directions and information was spot on. Diane drove up to make sure everything was good. Bill's home guide and history was the funniest, well written guide ever. We enjoyed reading every word. There are lots of condiments and spices in the cabinets. House was well equipped and bed was excellent. Here a few helpful pointers: 1. Print directions out the old fashion way because you get no cell signal as you get there. 2. You will survive a few days without being connected to the world. 3. Go in the daylight if you can. Roads are windy and narrow. 4. Bring pants, high socks, sneakers or boots, long sleeves and hats for walks in the woods. 5. Don't forget bug spray. 6. Bring a small hand saw for cutting the dead fallen logs for firewood. 7. Newspaper or firestarters if you are not good at starting a campfire. Have a fantastic time. Make sure to sit out under the stars and enjoy the peaceful sounds of silence. Thank you so much for sharing your home. Kevin and Mimi
This was the second time we've stayed here and it definitely won't be the last. Bill and Diana are both great and are super nice and helpful. So much so that this time around we even invited them over for dinner. People really don't get any nicer than them. As for the house, if you are looking to disconnect from society in a wonderful cabin then this is the place for you. There is no internet or cell service or even cable/satellite but he does have plenty of books and a TV with quite the collection of movies and television shows. I say cabin but really it's a house with a cabin feel. There is an oven with a gas stove top and two grills outside. He has quality furniture including some of the best vacation house beds so you will be comfortable. The showers are good and he even has complementary soap/shampoo/conditioner dispensers in both showers. It is on 80 acres so privacy is first and foremost. You truly are secluded and away from society which is just so peaceful. The bugs population is quite low and mostly not even noticed. There is a food lion and ace hardware store only fifteen minutes away with anything you may need. Also Charlottesville is only about forty minutes away. If you go there I highly recommend J&M Stock Provisions for quality meats. They are pricey but totally worth it. Also be sure to try Three Notch'd Brewery. Great craft beers and even their food is good which is quite rare in a brewery. Lastly, there is a Trump Winery only about twenty minutes away and I know, but Trump. Still, it is the best Virginia Winery I have been to. The wine was outstanding and tasted more like a California Winery than a Virginia one. Hope this review helps but seriously coming from consistent VRBO renters for over a decade this place is top notch.
Had an amazing time at this property. Was able to see the local attractions I wanted to check out while still enjoying the property for everything it is. Loved exploring the vast grounds and trails with my pup. Hopefully I can make it back to H'owl at the moon someday soon. Thanks Bill
