Elk Garden, West Virginia
The Retreat Cottage is a funky old country house; it is not a lace-doily kind of place. Everything works, and everything is clean, but stylistically it is country hodgepodge. It is the kind of place you can be comfortable bringing your friends, kids, or dogs without walking on tiptoes so as not to disturb anything. If that fits your style, I think you would enjoy it, as well as the beautiful setting next to a whitewater stream. For people who delight in nature, it can be a deeply satisfying place to be.
It has a full kitchen, full bathroom, washer and dryer. There is a bedroom on the first floor with two sets of twin bunk beds, and a pull-out queen bed in the living room. On the second floor, there is a queen bed, a twin daybed, and a twin trundle bed. There is WiFi and satellite TV in the cottage, as well as a landline phone with free long distance (in case your cell phone does not have reception).
The cottage is fully furnished with beds, chairs, couch, tables, and other necessary furniture. We also provide pillows, blankets, sheets, towels, coffee maker, pots, pans, plates and silverware.
Outside, there is a picnic table, a hammock, a charcoal grill, and a fire ring.
We are located near the town of Mount Storm, WV. VRBO often gives inaccurate distances to other points of interest in the area. Please use a mapping program to get accurate times and distances. In particular we are 45 minutes to an hour from Deep Creek Lake.
We sell charcoal, charcoal lighter, fire starter, and firewood, if you need any of these, all at very competitive prices. (Please do not bring your own firewood. This can spread many tree diseases that can harm our beautiful forests!)
Dogs are welcome, but must be on a leash when outside the cottage. Most other pets are not allowed; please call if you have specific questions.
The cottage is near the entrance to a campground and retreat center in the Potomac Highlands region of West Virginia. A wild and wonderful white water stream permeates the bouldered and hemlock forested property.
Abrams Creek is near many extraordinary recreational sites, but is also its own destination. Many people love exploring the varied ecosystems that are here.
In some places, the stream is a constant source of energy and playfulness; in other places, it is peaceful and calming, inviting you to soak in its beauty. The forest offers a vast array of plants, and signs of wildlife are everywhere.
In keeping with the campground setting, the retreat cottage is clean and simple, but not highly decorated. It has comfortable beds, full kitchen, washer/dryer, satellite TV, WiFi, and phone with free long distance.
Mount Storm (3 miles) has a general store, gas station, library, motel, sports and recreation store, and public park.
Other Things to Note:
You may check in anytime after 3PM until 10PM, or later by arrangement. Our usual check out time is noon. If you need more flexible check in or check out times, please contact us!
There is a full range of amenities, but no air conditioning--because in the mountains, you won't need it! The high temperature during the hottest months is usually below 80, and rarely gets above 85, at which time the house will be 10 degrees cooler. No recycled, "conditioned" air needed--you get to breath pure mountain air all the time!

The water in the bathtub leaked profusely the entire time we were there. The hidabed in the couch was smelly, dirty, and had mouse poop in it. The appliances in the kitchen were broken or burnt the food due to malfunction. It specifically mentioned that washer and dryer were available but the dryer is broken.
Grass was very high some places up to our knee. Mold on house and inside smell. Toilet didn’t work. Bathtub was filthy. We didn’t even stay the night we left. TV didn’t work. No check in communication with owner when we checked in the campground didn’t even know we was coming . Walls were dirty.
Was listed as 18.9 miles from our destination, was more like 30. House was a run down mess. INCREDIBLY OVERPRICED!
It was awesome friendly people.roads may be ruff to drive at times but overall I would recommend
Was great to get away and unplug. Didn’t miss that my cell phone didn’t have service. Brought back memories of camping as a kid.
For a dog friendly property, this was ideal. We had plenty of room in the yard to tether our furry friend. There wasn't much on the inside of the home for him to potentially destroy. The pictures were not what we walked into. With the property being pet friendly, I can certainly understand not updating or repairing floors & walls, but the property could have been cleaner. According to the site, deep Creek lake is 10.8 miles from the home-it is actually 45 minutes. The inside pictures listed are not recent. If you are looking for a low traffic, pet friendly, warm house to just sleep & shower--this is perfect.
This cottage is part of a lovely, spacious campground on a creek--would be wonderful to paddle around in the summer--great place for kids to ramble around in. But this is a pretty musty run down cottage sorely in need of a deep cleaning-- some lights don't work, there was an out of order sign on the dryer, the upstairs bed was just mattress/box springs on the floor--the frame was in the corner of the room, lots of dust, a previous renters dirty sock on the bathroom floor. If we hadn't have been travelling with a special needs child who can't handle porta potties, we probably would have gone for one of the cute, muuuch cheaper basic cabins instead.
dogs loved swimming in the creek in front of the house great location near Lake Jennings Randolph. We were able to go over to the lake several times and our two labs were able to swim for hours
Got there after dark, due to some incorrect directions from the property owner (e.g. when you turn off 219 S go 40 miles on 50 west)...more like 10 miles. Missed the signs and had to double back. No lights on at the cabin so could not see to open up, lady who checked us in forgot to tell us there was a key lock on the porch. They did send someone over to help us get in. Place was clean but lots of chipped paint, rusty tubs and sinks, kitchen light never came on, steps to the 2nd floor and queen bed were very narrow, had no railing (a bit shaky to get down to bathroom in the middle of the night), queen bed sits on the floor, not on a bed frame and is hard as a rock. We got there about 8pm Firday night, left at 6:30am the next morning. Again, not a bad propoerty, but in my opinion, more suited to a bunch of 20 somethings who want to hang out for the weekend. Not would I would call a quaint cottage.
I arrived at the rental which looked nothing like the picture on VRBO. My friend and I walked through the cottage and upon seeing to unsanitary condition of the property, immediately went back to the onsite manager and informed them that we would not be staying at the property. It was literally the filthiest placed I've ever encountered. The description on VRBO led me to believe that it was rustic, it went beyond rustic all the way to unsafe and unsanitary. There were flies everywhere, kitchen dirty. Spiders crawling above the beds. There was no way we were going to stay there
Horrible dirty dangerous and nothing as advertised
