Experience the uniqueness of Thompson's Hut, built in the early 1900's as a shelter for cattlemen on the Snowy Plains caring for their livestock during unpredictable mountain weather.
The Hut was relocated to our property several years ago and we have undertaken a sensitive restoration to retain its original essence while adding a few modern comforts.
The space
Thompson's Hut is a cozy cabin with original and updated features warmed by a wood fire and electric heater. Two vintage chairs encircle the fireplace for great story telling.
Snuggle up in the Queen sized bed with beautifully soft Cultiver linen sheets, or relax with a good book by the window or on the deck warmed with gorgeous morning sun.
As there are no internal doors within hut we have installed a privacy curtain between the kitchen area and bathroom. There we have a separate toilet, vanity and a step-in bath where you can soak using Hunter Lab bath salts, perhaps while enjoying a glass of wine. We also have linen robes for guests to use during your stay.
We appreciate you using water wisely.
We have a functional and well equipped kitchen with portable induction cooktop and electric frypan (no microwave). You are also welcome to try slow cooking your meals on the wood heater using the cast-iron cookware - please place cookware on the cooking stones provided, don't leave your cooking unattended and keep pots off the fireplace when not in use.
We believe in drinking good wine and whisky with great friends from beautiful glassware and trust you will enjoy this too.
We stock a basic pantry, which includes:
- Ground Coffee Beans from Emm Mac
- Mayde Teas
- Hot Chocolate & Marshmallows from Grounded Pleasure
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Salt & Pepper.
For other supplies, we recommend you pop into Woolworths or the grocer, a short drive away in Jindabyne, which also has many restaurants, pubs and take-away options.
The Hut has a highly efficient wood fire to provide our guests with a warm and a cozy atmosphere, though for most of the year the electric panel heater is more than enough for many people.
You will arrive to find a fire already set for your first night and supplies for subsequent nights: matches, fire-lighters, kindling, wood and an axe if you need more kindling.
It gets cold in the valley in the deep of winter. We have provided extra blankets in the hut, though please be sure to pack enough warm clothing if you are planning to stay through the cooler months.
There is limited phone access so please use the free WIFI for phone calls, music and movies. We do not have a television in Thompson's Hut.
Guest access
You will have access to Thompson's Hut including its 'home paddock'.
You are welcome to explore the 52 acre property at your own risk. We only ask that you shut gates, do not touch farm equipment or enter the shearing shed, and exercise caution at all times, especially around animals, barbed wire fences and on uneven ground.
Other things to note
To make Thompson's Hut as sustainable as possible we use Koala Eco products for cleaning and have installed a compostable toilet, which is easy to use, clean, and does not smell. Full instructions are provided in our House Manual after booking.
The step-in bath with shower means this listing might not suit those who have mobility issues.
Thompson's Hut is not suitable for pets due to the delicate nature of its furnishings and the possible disturbance to livestock on the farm.
We recommend our guests have travel insurance. It is possible - though rare - during winter months that roads are closed temporarily due to snow or ice and can disrupt travel plans. Please contact your insurer to assist with any costs associated with any travel plans that are disrupted.
