The walkway was weak--I had a stroke so sagging walkway was difficult to walk on and railing was somewhat loose as well. Wish they would say that all bedrooms are located upstairs. The ceiling fan was on when we got there, some how I got under but my husband was lucky not to lose an eye. I would suggest removing that fan, before someone seriously gets hurt. Also, queen size bed mattress has major sag in it. Disappointed.

A self-described tiny house; a bit cramped, but comfortable. Two coffee makers, but no coffee. Raised nail by the step going down from the living room that caught numerous pairs of socks and almost a bare foot, could have been a nasty injury. Strong sulphur smell when using hot water. 2-3 boards on the walkway from the driveway to the house that are nearly broken and give underfoot.

This property has potential. Unfortunately it isn't maintained or cleaned very well. There were dishes in the dishwasher. A load of laundry that had been washed still in the washer. The dishes/pots and pans were not cleaned very well and were just jumbled up in the cabinets. The bbq grill was broken. I could list more but will not. This was a good location for area activities.

We had a wonderful stay at this cabin! It was the perfect size for our family and had everything we needed to feel comfortable. We especially appreciated that it was dog-friendly, which made it easy to bring our furry family member along. The location was great—tucked away on a quiet road, making it peaceful and relaxing while still being convenient to nearby attractions. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to other families looking for a cozy getaway.

Really great location - we ended up skiing at Indian Head and Powderhorn over 3 days (4 nights). The property is very clean, well maintained, and has heated tile floors - a great way to warm one's toes after a day on the hills. The host, though, gets the absolute top scores. We always bring food to cook all of our meals. The kitchen has a very nice gas stove and oven (for a change, our other rental properties only had low quality electric) and all the kitchen supplies. I happened to find one it was lacking - a cheese grater. Jerry brought a new one in within the first 24 hours, just in time to make a salad for a second night dinner. The grater was accompanied by a bottle of wine - entirely not anticipated. And the advertisement that the property is dog friendly is really an understatement. The owners adore dogs. We brought our GSD, as always. Other properties have pages of rules and restrictions regulating big dogs (despite how well trained the dogs might be). At this property not only were there no restrictions, Jerry offered to bring a treat! We have stayed at a number of properties in the area for our skiing trips and this one so far has the absolute best combination of value and heart in it.

Stayed here for a 2-night ski trip with 4 people. Excellent, cozy cabin that perfectly captures the spirit of the UP. The Edmund Fitzgerald photo was a favorite of the group. The hosts were very kind and were easily reachable. The cabin is located in a scenic area full of wildlife—we encountered plenty of deer, turkeys, and even some foxes on the road! One suggestion would be to add some condiments like salt, pepper, etc.Overall we all loved the experience and would definitely return!!

Last minute booking so there was a communication issue with housekeeping but the host was immediately responsive and we appreciated his efforts to correct the situation. The cabin is small and simple but everything worked well. The in-floor radiant heat was especially nice. Only one of the spots in the garage was available due to a vehicle behind being stored in the second stall. But it is heated and was good to keep one car out of the elements. Locals do drive fast on Black River Rd so be careful with kids or pets and while backing in/out of the driveway. WiFi worked well. Also cable TV. Stairs are very steep, and all the beds are upstairs, only suitable for athletically capable people. There is a futon in the living room as an alternative. Overall really nice spot to access the wonderful winter resources during our visit.

It was okay. There are stairs that are steep, narrow, and small. The mattress in the main bedroom was uncomfortable. We ended up pulling out the futon downstairs to sleep on. The shower head is kinda low. I’m 5’7” and it was hard for even me to shower. The water wasn’t that hot either. I expected a little more for the price paid in my opinion. Definitely not a bad place to stay, I know I can be a little picky.

WONDERFUL! Such a cute and clean cabin! The decor was adorable and they had all the amenities we could have EVER needed. On site laundry, for FREE!!??!! That alone made my day after a full week of travel. At one point, my husband needed some clear packing tape for something (how random is that?!) We thought for sure we were out of luck and would have to drive up to Walmart (conveniently located in town not far away) but we hunted around and in the drawer under the microwave VOILA!!! A full roll of clear packing tape! Thats just crazy! How would the hosts even know to make that available, but they did and it was just what we needed at the time.Super great location and close to town(s) and sightseeing locations. For dinner we ran across the border to Wisconsin and ate at a Mexican restaurant called El Tarasco for my 50th b-day and O.M.G., it was so good! Only about 10-15 minutes drive from cabin and TOTALLY WORTH IT! I highly recommend it.If I HAVE TO think of a down side of the cabin I would say........(let me think a minute, I'll come up with something.......) No curtain on the large glass front door. That gave me the heebie-jeebies at night but then again, its the middle of the U.P., theres no one around so what does it matter? We would absolutely, without a doubt, 100%, guaranteed, stay here again. It was WONDERFUL!!!!!(Dogs loved it, too!)

We had a great time in the Black River Retreat! I had intended to ski at Big Powderhorn, which is very close to the cabin, but unfortunately they ended their season early. Luckily for me Snowriver was still open and is still only a short drive away, but I am glad I booked here rather than someplace closer to Snowriver. It is a fairly small cabin; probably not big enough for more than one couple alone or with only young kids, but it is cozy, clean, and comfortable. The internet was also surprisingly fast (use the 5G, not the 2G for best speeds). We didn't have time to enjoy the firepit, but it was a nice setup that I would have loved to try out if we had stayed another day or two. The only complaint I had is that the color of the ceiling in the loft made it a bit hard to judge distance in low light, which caused a couple head bumps at my height. However, my dislike for turning lights on if I can avoid it is also to blame there, so I can't be too upset about it. All in all we enjoyed our stay and would definitely come back for another ski trip or a summer visit to the parks.

Our family of four plus two dogs came up for post Christmas skiing. Unfortunately one of the days was raining so we chose to stay in, and so glad we picked he Black River Retreat. A day of games and relaxing always very easy and pleasant here. It is private, quiet and easy to walk dogs. It is not updated or modern decor if that is what you are looking for. But it is clean, cozy and comfortable, our daughters loved their small loft room.and our dogs were extremely happy. Only negative I can say is that the master bed needs updating, but not so much that we would t stay again. Thank you!

Jerry was a wonderful host. Very nice and attentive. The place was very clean and had everything we needed to enjoy a mid week get away. We took our dogs to the recomended dog park and they enjoyed a nice long run.Thank you Jerry.

This cute little cabin is the perfect getaway. It is close enough to town that you have access to any goods you might need with a short drive but out of the way enough that the lake and various hiking trails are close by.

We stayed for two nights and it was great. Very cozy area and very close to waterfalls and all the little towns and areas. We would definitely be back.

Nice, quiet, clean, cozy cabin near the Porkys, close to hiking trails, ski resorts, and downtown historic Ironwood.

Wonderful. Close to town and the lake. Not far at all from porcupine mountains and a bunch of other stuff. Great experience.
