This is a rustic, quirky, charming 30-year old cabin on the face of a mountain, off the grid. Adventurous guests only! This cabin was built by hand by its only previous owner, modeled after The Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone, where he was a park ranger in his younger days. It runs propane heat with two wood burning stoves. The house was a very popular bed and breakfast for many years.
Stairs: You can access one bedroom, the kitchen and dining, two bathrooms, and a living area with no stairs, but there are multiple staircases to the other area of the house.
We keep it stocked with spices and cooking oils. We have a full kitchen with appliances and cookware, dishes, and utensils. And a giant coffee percolator. We provide towels and linens.
This mountain house is gorgeous...AND it requires operation and living "intentionally." If the owners are not onsite, you will need to follow instructions on how to conserve power, run a generator, use a fireplace, and fill cistern water. It is at the end of a single lane private road which is winding and steep. The power is from solar, the water from a well, the sewer is septic. It has excellent 4G/LTE cell phone reception and fast, reliable internet. There will be NO landline phone.
Monitor the weather daily, bring appropriate gear for severe weather year-round.
You may see wild animals near the house. You may see a mouse in the house. Also, you are renting a mountain cabin without maid service or a cook. In some months, mountain cabins will have flies. Period. If you want a pest-free vacation experience, you should NOT pick a rustic mountain cabin, and you should expect that authentic pests come with an authentic mountain cabin experience. Four wheel, all wheel, or front wheel drive required in ice, mud, or snow, and highly recommended year-round on our steep, private gravel road, and with our mercurial weather.
But if these things don't deter you, you will adore this charming, creaky, gorgeous place, which is bordered on two sides by BLM land and has access to the entire Bighorn National Forest. It's on the eastern face of the mountains overlooking Sheridan and on into Montana to the north and Moncrief Ridge to the east.
Nearest travel to and from: Gillette WY (1.5 hr by car), Casper WY (2.5 hr by car), Denver CO (6.0 hr by car), Sheridan WY (15 min by car: fly through Denver and on to Sheridan on United)
Before you rent this house verify that the storage batteries have been replaced and are working properly. We had no power the last day we were there even though the generator was running constantly. Also verify that the logs have been resealed to prevent rain seeping through the walls in places. On the positive side, the deck and views are wonderful. The owner did give us credit for our last night’s stay. If you go in the summer, expect LOTS of flies.
We had a wonderful time at this property. Even though we had a few glitches with the solar electricity, Alexis was always available and on top of getting things fixed. I would definitely stsy here again. The house was beautiful and I could sit on that deck and enjoy that view forever ?
This was a great place to stay. The sunrises every morning were beautiful. We saw a few deer. The cat Bo was so sweet.
“This is the best vacation I’ve ever had!” exclaimed one of our grandsons. The rest of our family heartily agree! Our Wyoming vacation was a year in the making coordinating 11 individuals from 4 households, ranging in ages 6-75. This vacation was soooo worth the effort. The Upper Hideaway Mountain Lodge is all its online listing said and more. Intensely gorgeous views, peaceful setting ,rustically comfortable, roomy inside and out, extraordinary flora and fauna, one-of-a-kind home. When we stayed there, the owners were out of town. The host Alexis was readily accessible by text with the few questions we had. Our family rented the 2 seat 4-wheeler and explored the mountains. Fishing expeditions provided delicious fresh trout for dinner. Wildlife is abundant with sitings of whitetail and mule deer, grouse, snowshoe hare, antelope, elk, moose, and birds. The herds of free ranging cattle were really interesting to watch, as were the parasailors drifting down from the mountain top. Everyone of us would have stayed another week if we could have. This is absolutely a “don’t miss out on this one” vacation destination!
We’ve brought our family to stay at this mountain property a number of times since 1988, and found that the current owners have created a very comfortable environment with a touching homage to their predecessors. Our family of 9 had great meals around the large dining table, a fun evening around the firepit, and enjoyed 100 mile views from the spacious deck. Love the silence-broken only be the wind, the birds, and occasional coyotes! It’s on the border of the Bighorn NF where we fly-fished, rode horses, and hiked. We’ll be back!
Wonderful facility and base camp for relaxing and touring the adjacent mountains and area. Hosts were great and responded quickly when lightning damaged the generator and water well so there was minimal impact on the operation of the facility. Great views with rustic charm. We can highly recommend.to anyone looking for a great location with easy access to the Bighorn Mts., local history and most of the modern conveniences. Exceptional value.
We loved staying here! We're already planning another stay. The view was amazing, the cabin was perfect. It was comfortable with plenty of room to spread out. We attended some scheduled events in and around Sheridan, but couldn't wait to get back to enjoy the beauty of the surrounding countryside.
Very nice
Great experience, Eric is a helpful and accommodating host. The property is very well designed to accommodate several guest comfortably. The rooms are large and beds comfortable, and there are multiple common areas for guests to enjoy. The views are of course outstanding.
Accomodations as described. Well stocked kitchen. Deck and view is to die for. Hiking in the area was beutiful. Kayaked at upper resevoir and Sibley Lake. Hosts and local dogs are wonderful and non-intrusive. Bring clothes, food, and a desire to be outdoors. I would reccomend a minimum AWD vehicle for Red Grade Trail. Do not miss the Brinto museum.
Location was perfect for us we came in from Colorado, Montana & Wisconsin. Three married couples meeting together, the views were awesome, this place has it all : beauty & comfort & space. We hope to come back....
Staying here with my family was the highlight of our summer! The accommodations were exactly what we needed! My family unit was my husband, our two children (4 and 4mo). We traveled (from Casper wy) with my dad and his wife who hailed from Jerusalem Israel. As they have specific dietary needs the kitchen was perfect and the space was so great that we were able to have our own spaces (and then some)!! For me the bonus was having a fur friend (Bo the cat) come join me for reading and resting in the swing. I would highly recommend this vacation rental Eric and Pamelaare generous and knowledgeable hosts! We had a great time! Thank you!
We had a nice weekend stay at this cabin. The cabin is has a fully stocked kitchen, large rooms with many thoughtful items to make you comfortable and entertain you and a large deck that is perfect to relax and watch the area. This cabin is large with plenty of room to bring your entire family. The owners stay on site in the basement. They are great hosts and very helpful.
We had a wonderful stay at this property! Great views from the porch and a well-stocked house. We had some snow in May and were able to do puzzles and read by the wood-burning fireplace. Highly recommend! 5 stars!
