About the Area

Nestled just 4 miles inside the southern entrance of Yosemite National Park is the charming and historic town of Wawona. Located at the base of Chilnualna Falls (the second-highest vertical drop waterfall in Yosemite) and home to the principal trailheads into the southern Yosemite wilderness, Wawona is also the closest town to the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias.
Wawona has the feel of a small town but is bustling with activity! Over 160 residents, including Yosemite Park employees, live in Wawona and can be seen gathering at the town's community center, playing a pickup game of basketball at the elementary school, jogging on one of the many picturesque trails, or simply walking their dogs and baby strollers through the winding residential streets. The historic Wawona Swinging Bridge boasts the best natural water slide in the Park! The historic village is filled with docents, stagecoach rides, horseback rides, and barn dances in the summer season, and the Wawona Meadow Loop offers year-round riparian meadow wildlife viewing.
Wawona was known to the local Native American Miwok in their language as Pallachun (a good place to stay). It is located entirely within Yosemite National Park (it preceded the founding of the park as a national recreation area) and is located on the South Fork of the wild and scenic Merced River, on the main highway (State Route 41) from Fresno to Yosemite Valley.
Galen Clark, who helped gain preservation legislation for Mariposa Grove and what later became part of Yosemite National Park, occupied the Wawona area in 1855 and established a tourist rest and modest ranch, which he later sold and made into a hotel and resort property (the Wawona Hotel). The Wawona post office was established in 1878 and was originally called Clark's Station.
The Redwoods in Yosemite has over 110 vacation rental homes and is proud to say that all of them are located in Wawona. All are within walking distance of everything that Wawona has to offer, and every one of them is surrounded by the majesty of Yosemite National Park

We have to still drive 1 hour for the valley but the house was sooo cozy and nice. I really loved the place. The stars in the night was super cool and the river was cool too.

I love the area. The cabin was a little on the $$$ side but the natural beauty is worth it. The cabin is older slightly dated but clean and comfortable. I would come back.

Check in and out was easy. The people were helpful and friendly. The cottage had all the amenities you would need. A little market is located close incase you need something. Parking was right outside the door.

The cabin is located next to the river. Being inside Yosemite Park is a plus! The cabin was properly stocked with toilet paper and paper towels, but the utensils had dust on them and there was a giant cobweb from the backdoor to the kitchen cabinet. Also there are other cabins very close by.

We had a blast and the cabin was great! Beds were super comfortable and it was nice to be able to hear and see the creek from our cabin. I wish we could have had an open fire/fire pit but I understand the reasoning. We would definitely stay here again.

The main attraction for us was staying inside the national park, which eliminated the need to go through the ranger stations each morning. It's a small place but was very clean with most of the basics provided (no soap or shampoo for showers).

It was small. Everything worked as it was supposed to. The kitchen was not fully stocked, because there was no spices, not even salt or pepper. The blankets were old and not clean. It was not very cozy. But, I would stay there again. Being close to the river was nice.

Love, Love, Loved our stay. Perfect place to launch our Yosemite adventure. Best part, sitting on the deck listening to the sound of the river flow below.

The original Sparrow's Nest listing was not available when we arrived. Maintenance workers were digging out and replacing a main water line, and the place would not be ready for several days. Management was unaware of this so when we informed them and complained, they made arrangements to put us up in a significantly larger and nicer log home. We were very pleased with those accommodations. We had to wait two hours so they could send a cleaning person over to prepare the place we eventually stayed, but we were very happy there. Even from Wawona, it is still about another hour and a half to the main Yosemite Valley, but the park remains breathtaking!
