Our unique home will provide a once in a life time off the grid experience from 1 guest to 3 guests. Located in a secluded and remote location of the Western Navajo Nation, our home is easily accessible to local restaurants, stores, and not far from two of the natural wonders, Grand Canyon and Monument Valley.
Our one room earth home called a Hogan, is located along the Little Colorado River and is 29 miles east of Grand Canyon and a 1 hour drive north of Flagstaff.
It is on the family homestead of my grandmothers summer sheep camp.
There is no electricity, the stars and moon are all you need.
There is no running water, however 5 gallonwater jug will be provided for your use.
There is no plumbing, a short brisk walk to a outhouse is available.
Comfortable accommodations for two are shown in the picture, however we have a additional cot for a third guest when reserved at booking for a small additional fee.
You will have access to the large open space within the homestead, including the outdoor cooking stove for cooking purpose.
This is a self check in/check out accommodation. I or a family member are only 1 1/2 mile away. Throughout your stay I will always be available by text or a phone call if you have any questions during your stay.
We give our guest their privacy at the male hogan when occupied. We also have more structures on the homestead that is accessible to everyone in my family who do maintenance work on the property.
Being a guest at our family homestead will give you glimpse of our daily life without running water, electricity or plumbing.

Staying in this Hogan was an incredible experience for our family. No electricity or running water was not a problem with the solar battery - they had 3 lights hooked up to it and there were USB ports as well. We loved being outside after dark looking up at the stars. The outhouses were fine. We have recommended this Hogan to many friends already!
A great experience! Recommend to any adventurous people!
Wonderful experience. Very unique. Vista was beautiful. So peaceful and quiet. Met family member who ckeced us in and heard the history of the property.
Amazing experience, would absolutely recommend! Hosts are amazing and willing to educate on Navajo culture.
Our stay here was such a unique and cool Navajo experience! If you're looking for something authentic and out of the ordinary, I HIGHLY recommend!
Indipendent room with a private entrance. Everything was really perfect: big bathroom with a beautiful bath tub, confortable bed with wonderful linen and all necessary for coffee and tea. Thanks Sandra, an oasis of peace during our tour!
It felt like a privilege to be able to stay in this space. The description is very accurate, it was very hot, and so we easily moved the cots outside to watch the stars. We were also fortunate to meet the Grandmother who stopped by to deliver a battery for the lights (which we did not require, with the stars and the moon).
My best friend and I had an incredible time at the male hogan. Our host, Shanna, provided everything we needed and more. She was so helpful and kind, giving us great food and sights to see from a local’s perspective and we couldn’t have enjoyed our time nearly as much without that. Seeing the Milky Way before going to bed was a bonus. Highly recommend her!
This was so worth it. Shanna's mom was a delight and she shared some interesting and valuable information about her Navajo heritage. Thank you for letting us share in this experience.
From the moment we laid eyes on our Hogan, we were delighted, then we met Amelia, we were in love. She greeted us with beads and a smile that hooked both my daughter and me. We immediately started a fire in the woodstove and proceeded to the little Colorado river where we hiked til dark. It was stormy upto midnight, and then the stars began to show themselves; you felt as if you could reach out and touch Orion and the Big Dipper. We all need more of this kind of reset in our lives. Thank you to Shanna and Amelia
We loved the endless view of the plains and mountains, the sunset, the stars, the sound of the wind and the cozy warm night in the Hogan. I had no idea that Shanna runs a storytelling experience, so have missed it. If you stay in her Hogan, it should be a lovely addition to get to know about her family life and culture in the Navajo Nation reservation.
Thank you Shanna for allowing us to stay in your families Hogan. Everything one could need for a pleasant nights stay was provided and we truly relished in the remote location. Star gazing was in credible and we all slept like babies inside the Hogan. For anyone looking for something a little bit different I highly recommend staying here if you happen to be in the area. My 12 year old son said that this night was one of his favortite memories from our trip!
Thanks for sharing your beautiful hogan with us! Such a unique experience. And the most peaceful, quiet night ever.
Stayed for 1 night with my 11 yo twin boys on our way to the Grand Canyon. They loved it! Directions provided were clear; we arrived after dark which I probably wouldn’t recommend. Unfortunately it was cloudy so we couldn’t see the stars. Temp in the 30s and we could hear wind buffeting the hogan but it was cozy and warm inside. Yummy breakfast at the Cameron Trading Post.
I am glad we experienced this spot, but I think a more comfortable bed would have gone a long way. Also, the stove needs a damper, it was a pretty cold night and our stove went out several times. Despite those things, i would still recommend it to someone looking to try a totally unique camping exp.
