Our Yurt is a perfect winter sojourn. We are in a finite zone where the high deserts soar up into the Rocky Mountains. Thus, the wonderful small town of Paonia is temperate in winter, with access to the best winter sporting one direction and calming desert in the other.
In Southwest Colorado 2 miles west of Paonia, is a Yurt nestled on a large wrap around redwood deck anchored by two mature Elms and is wonderful year round . and The building is situated in close proximity to the North Fork of the Gunnison River. The Yurt is a sanctuary far removed from neighbors and below the sight-line and activity of Highway 133.The property meanders above and below the Yurt for a quarter of a mile along the river’s edge. There are established wildlife corridors for Elk and Deer. Eagles, Red Tailed Hawks, and Blue Herons nest on the property or directly across the river. Robins routinely inhabit the trees directly above the sheltering Yurt.
When entering the 700 square foot Yurt, a 14’ high skylight inset in a mad array of knotty Aspen, draws you to its center. Here the fireplace anchors the middle and the remaining amenities unwind to the outside of the circumference. Here there is full ADA kitchen and ADA bathroom, queen size bed, dining table, and sitting area. The surrounding river, mountains and cultivated farmland can be viewed ten different ways through 8 windows and 2 French doors. Think of a random compass point and there you will find a window framing your gaze. There is an openness seldom seen in standard structures. After rubbernecking for a while, your first coherent thought is, ‘I can relax here’. And the reality is, you can.

Boy, did we have fun! I'm a five-year-old yellow Lab, and our parents took me and my older black Lab sister to George's yurt for five days. Every morning we got to run up and down the river and splash to our hearts' content. We got to see deer and a a big red fox and I flushed a pheasant (my favorite thing to do)! Our parents must have really enjoyed it, as they were in a good mood the whole time. There is so much to do in the area, both for humans and dogs. We really enjoyed Paonia, a wonderful small town with a real sense of community that my dad said was like going back in time to the 1940s when rural America was the backbone of the nation. Lots of nice places to eat, although our parents didn't bring us any doggie bags. They selfishly ate it all for themselves. We got to go across Grand Mesa and the really pretty Kebler Pass. Our parents stopped a lot to take pictures of all the bright gold aspen trees and my sister and I got to play a lot in the mountain lakes and sniff all kinds of interesting stuff. We didn't enjoy all the wineries as much as our mom and dad did (they wouldn't give us any to taste), but that was OK because we got to watch all the wildlife and the really pretty sunsets over the river every night from the cool walkway from our yurt. My sister and I think the yurt is the nicest place we have ever stayed. We are lobbying for a return trip. And for circular dog houses. We'll let you know how that goes.
Lovely place in a serene setting. Highly recommend.
We really enjoyed our stay, it is so peaceful and relaxing! The property is really kept up nice. We love all the flowers and trees. It is so nice to be able to bring our dog with us too.
Quiet, comfortable, beautiful river location. Wonderful time, thanks again
Great land scaping well kept Perfect location
Amazing property, wonderful yurt, beautiful scenery, excellent host...what more can I say? All-around awesome vacation!
Despite reading EVERY prior review, I was still unprepared for what a great spot this is. It was so peaceful with the beautiful flowers everywhere and the roaring river in the background. The deck was huge and the yurt was wonderful. It was fully stocked with all items you would need. I really hated to leave.....
George and Devon were excellent hosts. From the communication, to the amenities, and the location, it’s the perfect get away. We can’t wait to return.
Beautiful location, gorgeous property, wonderful hosts - I wouldn’t change a thing! Thanks for another wonderful stay!
Very easy. George is very accommodating
George has a great spot and provides exceptional care for his guests. The Yurt was extremely comfortable and relaxing. The views were very nice and peaceful. Great weekend away to reset with my wife. We can’t wait to come back.
Relaxing
We had everything we needed and the location is peaceful and private
This is a perfect place to chill out and recharge. The yurt is comfortable and accommodating; the hosts welcomed us with fresh flowers from the garden; there were wild turkeys and deer wandering about; and we spent pleasant mornings having coffee (and evenings drinking wine) in chairs overlooking the river. Lots of things to see and do in the valley, and lovely to have such a fabulous place to come home to.
This place is a hidden gem. My wife and I were looking for a place to unplug and relax; this was perfect! Having the river so close was so relaxing and all the birds and wildlife was so calming and beautiful to watch. The yurt is quaint, well-equipped and cozy. George was very communicative and answered all our questions. We will definitely be back!
My wife and I had a great stay at George’s place. Great indoor space, amazing patio area and on the river. George was great to work with, and very respectful. Highly recommend.
If you find yourself in the middle of nowhere western Colorado and are hankering for a rural retreat, stay here. George and Devon are lovely hosts and their property is a magical respite. I could imagine the yurt getting very hot in the summer and the bed could use some softening. But our stay was just what we hoped it would be - a soothing start to a very fun and busy vacation. And our pup Chinle has never been happier than on the wraparound fully enclosed deck.
Location couldn’t be better, just outside of Paonia, private and secluded spot on the North Fork of the Gunnison River. A unique and luxuriously appointed yurt with spacious decks on all sides, nicely furnished and with all the creature comforts. We will recommend it to everyone!
Great way to decompress. The owner was helpful, available and got to the small issues we had right away! The space was clean and ready for us and exactly as advertised on the site.
