The Battery sits on the entrance to the harbour, on the slopes of Signal Hill. It is sometimes described as an outport within the city of St. John's and is noted for its steep slopes, and colourful houses. The Battery has been the site, over the centuries, for gun emplacements (batteries), such as Fort Waldegrave, for the defence of St. John's Harbour, including during both World Wars. It is home to Chain Rock, a land outcropping to which a large chain was attached connecting to Fort Amherst, since as early as 1770, to prevent the entry of enemy ships into St John's harbour. Chain Rock is one of two rocks located on opposite sides of the Narrows, the aptly named entrance to the harbour; Pancake Rock is on the opposite shore. The space between the two rocks is 174 metres. A defensive chain was stretched between the rocks by means of a capstan at nightfall. During World War I and II the chain was replaced with anti-submarine nets.

This unit is the lower suite. It is a in-law suite with an interior door separating the unit from the upper apartment. Access may be required in cases of emergency to access the breaker panel for the property.

    We appreciated the well-appointed kitchen (with basics like oil, salt, and pepper) and the thoughtful coffee/tea options. That said, there are several things guests should know. The furniture is elegant but not family-friendly — easy to soil and hard to relax around with kids. Noise from the upstairs unit can be quite noticeable, depending on who is there. Laundry is available, but it’s an all-in-one washer/dryer in a very low-ceiling, unfinished area. Accessibility is limited: the bathroom has steps up to the toilet and very low ceilings, awkward for anyone taller than 6ft, and easy to lose footing. The bathroom products are high-end but strongly perfumed, so bring your own if you prefer something simple. Finally, all communication from the management company felt prefab and impersonal — some even arrived with empty fields. This made the stay feel transactional rather than welcoming. Overall, some nice touches but several practical limitations and poor communication kept this from being a fully comfortable stay.

    Super cute unit, very clean and so close to all of the things. I read some other reviews on another site and everything that guests mentioned as a ‘con’ were listed in the description (ie, parking on the street). Super comfie bed and the couch was comfie, too. We enjoyed our time here. Hosts were beyond communicative and helpful. Super duper with responses even though I seemed to have 5000 questions. Def recommend!!

    I have never spent more money for a VRBO property, so I was expecting a five-star experience. The unit was clean, comfortable and convenient to most places we visited, but there were some issues. Parking was not ideal as there is no guaranteed spot. Street parking was close by, but not always available. The VRBO ad said the unit offered cable TV, but it did not. Finally, there was the noise issue. We frequently heard people talking or kids crying upstairs.
