Charleston, South Carolina
Summary:
The Charleston Gem is an absolute treasure; it is located in the heart of Charleston’s historic district, and within easy walking distance of the shops and restaurants on King Street, the City Market, Colonial Lake, museums, art galleries, and the Battery. The property is listed in the prestigious National Register of Historic Places. The guest house was first mentioned in a sale in 1775, which means it predates that!
The Space:
Dr. Glover purchased the property in 1825 and built the grand main house, which is considered one of Charleston’s finest examples of Italianate architecture. It is cozy and comfortable with original hardwood floors and new tiles. We would be grateful if you place the bedspreads on a chair if you are not using them on the bed. You are on vacation, you do not need to make up or strip the beds before your departure. We want you to be comfortable and happy. The owners live on the premises and are friendly and love meeting guests. Due to allergies, we cannot accommodate any animals. The apartment, which can accommodate four people, is decorated in a traditional English style. There are 2 bedrooms, one with a full bed and the other with two twin beds. There is a comfortable sitting room with a television, a fully equipped kitchen, and a full bathroom. The sunny dining room overlooks a private garden, which is not accessible to guests.
Amenities include washer drier, iron and ironing board, Wi-Fi, coffeemaker, off street parking, and heating and air conditioning.
There is a portable dehumidifier to battle the humidity. Please empty the dehumidifier as needed, and do not lower the air conditioning thermostat settings below 68, as this increases the humidity causing condensation. There is a pharmacy only a three-minute walk, and the Medical University of South Carolina is a fifteen-minute walk away.
Guest Access:
The apartment is on the ground floor of what was originally the kitchen house and is part of an estate. Charleston is a walking city and we are within 20 minutes of everywhere. Guests should park at the very back of the building and are requested not to block anyone in.
The Neighborhood:
Charleston has been repeatedly voted the friendliest and politest city in America and has been welcoming and entertaining guests for almost three hundred years! Come and experience genteel Southern Hospitality at its finest. Located in the historic Harleston Village, walking distances to The College of Charleston and it's beautiful campus. Colonial Lake is just two blocks from our door step and can be a gorgeous walk at sunset or sunrise. There is a playground attached to the lake, for the kiddos. I recommend renting bikes, taking a carriage tour and the walking tours. You can really get a sense of the peninsula and its history.
Getting Around:
Charleston is a very walkable city, and this property is located a short distance to just about everything on the peninsula. The Carta DASH is a free shuttle that can be caught along King Street and Broad Street, and travels a loop to the Market, the Museums on Meeting Steet and shopping and dining along Upper King Street.
Other Things to Note:
Charleston is a formal city and locals enjoy dressing up, I therefore suggest you bring a formal outfit as well as your casual clothing. Or you can go shopping at Brooks Brother, Saint Johns, Gucci, Chico's and all the other fine stores. For jewelry I recommend Joint Venture which has fabulous estate pieces and Crogan's which has lovely gifts as well as gorgeous jewelry (and you can purchase the exquisite a palmetto bug broach or necklace) both are on King Street. There is a farmers market on Marion Square on Saturday. On the Second Sunday of every month, King street becomes pedestrianized and is very nice to explore and shop!
Interaction with Guests:
Our knowledgeable front desk associates are happy to give recommendations! You can't go wrong as we are spoiled here :) My favorite spots are Cru Cafe on Anson Street, O-Ku and Indaco on King, Blind Tiger and Oak on Broad, 82Queen, the Watch at the Restoration Hotel on Wentworth is great for a drink and light meal and has an amazing view, the Grand Bohemian is fabulous and the food and drinks are fabulous.
For an older historic home this is well maintained.Appliances are older, a little noisy at nite but functional. Worked well for my family, tho’ the double bed might be small for some couples. Also the dining table is in a narrow space and wouldn’t work well for more than 2-3 for a full meal. location is good & in a nice neighborhood of beautiful historic houses. The combo lock was a little tricky but communication with the management was easy with texting.
The property fit our needs perfectly. Walking distance to targeted places and to tour connections.
Plenty of room for two couples. Lovely wood floors, quiet neighborhood. Twenty minute walk to all of downtown. Four nights was not even close to enough time to take in all the sights. First time in Charleston, a foodies paradise. Parking and driving in Charleston can be a bit of a challenge, leave the Suburban at home!
We enjoyed our stay and would definitely stay again.
This property is indeed centrally located. It was a 15–20-minute walk (we walk slowly) to downtown. Parking is definitely a problem if you have a large vehicle but fortunately, we were able to secure open air parking downtown. The layout of the property is interesting to say the least but was very comfortable. Keep in mind this is a historic property and not new construction and you will have no problems. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely be come back.
The location was by far the best aspect of this property. We were able to walk all over historic downtown Charleston from Colonial Lake to the Battery or Market Street to the College of Charleston. We are in good shape, so that helps! While having a place to park my car was awesome, the property managers said there is room for 4 cars. Absolutely not! There were 2 other cars besides ours, and we could barely fit and it made for tricky maneuvering to get the vehicles safely out. And if you have a large SUV or truck, forget it. The other thing I would suggest, is that the description about the property being charmingly decorated, is way off. It looked and smelled like a grandma’s house decorated in poor ‘80s colors and styles. The twin beds looked like a child made them up. Oh how I wish I could get my hands on a property like that! With very little money and effort (paint and bedding from Homegoods or Target), this place could truly be charming. Also….the only comfortable seating is a couch that was so old you need to throw a sheet or blanket over top. This property needs as least one more comfy chair. All in all, the location was totally worth the lack of updates it needs.
Great location , walkable to downtown. The place could use an upgrade and was a little musty smelling. Great launching pad to do local activities, but not if you wanted a cozy place to hang out.
We had to move boxes of trash and an empty key in the back parking area just in order to move our car to turn around. The porch area was filthy and with current Amazon packages. Code didn't work. Spoke with VRBO as they gave us an emergency code to enter property. You should be embarrassed to advertise this property. It is terrible.
Charleston was great. Vrbo location and property good. Parking us a problem at vacation site.
The listing advertised off street parking. Parking lot was full so we ended up having to park on the street. Old furniture was very uncomfortable (living room couch. and primary bed). No TV in primary bedroom. We ended up leaning early.
Good location. The building was historical and needed a little added upkeep.
Wonderful place to spend a few days. Very quiet area. Walking distance to plenty of places to see. The space was actually larger than expected. If in the area, I would definitely look to stay here again.
Good
Great location. The building seems authentically historic but decor is tired, there is clearly mold in the unit, and air conditioning in one bedroom does not work. Ice and water on fridge door out of order. As a VRBO host myself, I was disappointed that the duvets did not have washable covers on them as they were old and smelly.
Easy process. Location can't be beat!
Description and photos is what was there. Close to everything and premises were clean and enough a/c to keep it cool. Well stocked kitchen for our needs. Would definitely stay there again
Street level apartment carved out of historic house. Many charming touches, but spotty Wi-Fi, odd rooms, and general run down feeling.
We had a great stay recently at this property. The space was just the right size for myself and 3 adult children. I loved being within walking distance to all that Charleston has to offer!
This apt was a good Location to the History area of Charleston. We did walk to 80 Bull cafe and Sabatino’s pizza for a meal. I have a traverse van, parking was available, but a tight squeeze when four cars was there. WiFi was not always available.
Nice easy convenient place to stay for a long weekend.
We came to attend a daughters graduation from The College of Charleston. We were so close we walked there. The home was spacious enough to sleep 4 very comfortably. Having a kitchen was a plus. My only suggestion, as a Realtor, would be to update the bathroom. The inside of shower curtain needs cleaning. Thanks for a great experience!
We can start at parking for the property. I understand they want you to park in the back BUT it needs to be more clear that if you have an SUV it will not fit!!!! Very tight squeeze getting in and out…good luck! No Wi-Fi. It’s advertised to have Wi-Fi but there isn’t any. I only make this a big deal because I had to work remotely a few day while on vacation and couldn’t. Cleanliness- shower was filthy. Understand(again) is historic area but it was gross!!! We left a day early!! Refrigerator was making odd sounds all through the night..every night…no sleep!!!
