Chatham, Massachusetts
** SHIP'S LIGHT IS CURRENTLY UNDERGOING A MAJOR RENOVATION! Having stood the test of time for almost 200 years, the house is now mostly gutted, awaiting a new foundation, upgraded systems and a modified floor plan. We hope to begin renting again later in 2024, when the house is ready for the next 200 years! In the meantime, we will post updates here and will look forward to hosting you again soon! **
Ship’s Light has looked down Cross Street to Chatham Village Center for more than 180 years. Built and occupied by some of Chatham’s most eminent residents since 1825, it was converted to four housekeeping apartments for summer visitors circa 1945. Lovingly restored by long-time current owners, this gracious antique home offers modern comfort and convenience with the character and charm of a bygone era.
The Gifford Buck apartment--the largest of the four apartments--is a comfortable first-floor, 5-room, 2 bedroom, 2 bath gem. Airy and light, the large living room with working fireplace and flat-screen TV occupies the center of the house. The dining room seats 8 and connects to a charming full-sized kitchen with a small breakfast table--or eat and relax on the quiet back porch or side yard with picnic tables and area seating. Two air conditioned bedrooms--one with a queen-sized bed and one with two twins--and two full baths make this apartment perfect for a family. One of the bathrooms also includes a washing machine and dryer. The charm of the apartment is further enhanced by the warm glow of beautifully refinished, wide pine, antique floors and wainscoting. Wi-fi is available throughout the house.
Centrally located within a short walking distance of excellent Chatham dining, shopping, movies and band concerts, the house is three blocks from the town salt water beach on Oyster Pond, and one mile from Coast Guard Beach, a great stretch of Atlantic Ocean and dunes. Many individuals, couples and extended families consider Ship’s Light their vacation home. We invite you to join them in making your vacation something special.
The Gifford-Buck apartment at Ship’s Light is rented for minimum 7-night stays during the summer and and for minimum 2-night stays during the shoulder and off-seasons. Other units with unique features are also available and the whole house can be rented as a 5-to-6 bedroom home for family gatherings. Contact the owner for details.

Had all amenities necessary, walking distance to town and host very accommodating.
Perfect in town mid week getaway. Weather was perfect, house comfortable- easy recommendation
Can’t beat the location Love the old cape charm and great history to the place
This house is a treasure.
This is a wonderful place to stay to experience Chatham and the wider Cape Cod. Very relaxing and enjoyable stay.
We really enjoyed being walking distance to Chatham‘s main street. The unit itself was very roomy for our family of four, and we appreciated having two bathrooms. Our preference for future stays would probably be a more modern property, but especially if you want the historic feel of Cape Cod, this is a great choice.
We loved our stay and hope to return soon! Couldn’t have been more convenient for us!
Thank you for this amazing stay! The location is absolutely ideal, near a pond, the sea, Chatham town, in the middle of the cape so near everything. The house is absolutely lovely and set for everything needed to relax- outside reading, inside in the living room, the kitchen well equipped... we wish to plan a return visit. Thank you!
Charming historic home in a great location
Excellent stay- hope to be back soon!
All was wonderful!
best location intown
Fourth time renting this property. That says it all
We had a wonderful time at this charming property. In particular the working fireplace added to the coziness and old fashioned feel of the unit. One observation, though: Although the TV is a good size flat screen the basic cable package made for very limited viewing (no CNN, Fox, NESN, Espn, Golf Channel, etc.). Since we were there for only 4 nights this was a non-issue this trip. But, given the excellent location, warmth and coziness, this would make a pleasant winter getaway for a week or so and the limited viewing would be a significant issue then.
House set in quiet neighborhood. Enjoyed walks to nearby Park and homes. Also, close to Main Street. We appreciated reading the booklet on the History of the house and how its been lovingly preserved! Thank-you for a Special stay!
We wanted an end-of-summer getaway before the start of the new school year and found the Gifford Buck apartment available. It had everything we needed and so close to Main Street with all the shops and eateries. The owners were very responsive, though we didn't need anything during our stay. Quiet, calm pond nearby if you have smaller kids but mine are older so we walked to Lighthouse Beach. This house has history and I would love to see what the other apartments look like. Another time!
We were very happy
Great location! Walking distance to everything! Stores, beaches, restaurants…. all just steps away.
We absolutely loved staying at this little gem. Very reminiscent of many years past visiting Chatham, we loved the old Cape Cod feel and proximity to town.
Exactly as described this refurbished 1828 home felt perfect for our stay in Chatham. Antiques mingled with modern comforts. Walking distance to downtown. We’d love to return. Allison was responsive and helpful. Really relaxed on our first vacation to the Cape, largely due to the homey feel of Ship’s Light. Thank you!
We loved the location of this charming home. We could easily walk to downtown. It is a historic home so it is not like staying in a new build but that is what we loved about it. Allison was very easy to communicate with and we would totally stay there again
a quaint large VRBO apartment in an old Chatham home in easy walking distance to shopping and restaurants. The largest of the units in the house is decorated with vintage items and there is lots of space! We had a great time.
Very comfortable.
