The Neighborhood:
The Gold Coast Historic District is a historic district in Chicago, Illinois. Part of Chicago's Near North Side community area, it is roughly bounded by North Avenue, Lake Shore Drive, Oak Street, and Clark Street.
The Gold Coast neighborhood grew in the wake of the Great Chicago Fire. In 1882, millionaire Potter Palmer moved to the area from the Prairie Avenue neighborhood on the city's south side. He filled in a swampy area which later became Lake Shore Drive, and built the Palmer Mansion, a forty-two room castle-like structure designed by Henry Ives Cobb and Charles Sumner Frost. Other wealthy Chicagoans followed Potter into the neighborhood, which became one of the richest in Chicago.
In the late 1980s, the Gold Coast and neighboring Streeterville comprised the second most-affluent neighborhood in the United States, behind Manhattan's Upper East Side. Today, the neighborhood is a mixture of mansions, row houses, and high-rise apartments. Highlights include the Astor Street District and the James Charnley House.

There was a hole in the ceiling right outside a bedroom, and water was dripping to to floor. Carpet was soaked and smelled moldy. You can see inside the ceiling and it was very moldy. Called the property manager late evening and they told me that they needed to talk to the team whoever that was to make a decision on refund and the team would be available the next day. The next day I called again and was told that I needed to stay as scheduled to get a partial refund and they wouldn’t know how much. Floor was dirty. Shower curtain was very moldy. No air conditioning in bedrooms. Stay away from this property management. False advertisement and bad communication. They only refunded a very small amount.
We enjoyed the surrounding neighborhood. The condo itself is just ok. Spooky side entry door and ok interior. Had a good time overall.
Overall great location, in downtown Chicago! Checking in and out was very easy. Enough towels and blankets provided. Apartment was very stuffy but they did provide fans, only 1 window unit upstairs, so not a lot of air moving overall. Carpet very dirty, didn’t want to walk around barefoot. Overall good experience, you get what you pay for, with rental properties.
Perfect area for friends meeting to have a fun weekend near bars/ restaurants.
Very clean, phenomenal location!! My family and I stayed here for three nights and had a blast. Plenty of space and you can't beat this location. Would absolutely love to stay here again, thank you!!
Easy access to all parts of the city, we found nearby free parking every day and the host is immediately responsive and helpful.
The entrance to the property looks like a war zone. Down a muddy, broken glass strewn back ally to an iron gate fortified by unpainted plywood (which I suppose was for privacy, clearly not for aesthetics ). Then up one flight of rickey, old, falling down staircase that must be in violation of the building code for both the steepness and tread depth. In the morning homeless people were sleeping on the discarded couch outside the iron fence. Hence probably the need for the fence. Once inside, the unit had clearly been serviced, cleaned and probably well cleaned. However, the sofas and throws in the family room were filthy with years of stains. It is understandable with an older building that things like bathrooms and doors may not be new, however all of these need repair: bathroom doors delaminating, paint that looks like it was applied with a broom, and shower window repaired(?) with duck tape. All in all the stay can be summarized by saying we left after two nights. We chose the unit for its location within the city, which turned out to be perfect. The unit itself however is in no means in keeping with residential homes in the area and hence cannot meet expectations of people renting.
Pros: location, price, easy access in and out, great kitchen Cons: *No central air! If you're traveling in the summer and like to stay cool, this is NOT the place for you. The one small window unit (for both floors) never went below 73. The basement rooms had no fans either, so it was quite warm sleeping at night. *The bedrooms are downstairs, so be prepared to carry your suitcases down a steep flight of stairs.
We were just looking for a simple place for my family of 5 to stay while in town for the weekend and this location did not disappoint! Thank you for our stay!
