The Neighborhood:

The Gold Coast Historic District is a historic district in Chicago, Illinois. Part of Chicago's Near North Side community area, it is roughly bounded by North Avenue, Lake Shore Drive, Oak Street, and Clark Street.

The Gold Coast neighborhood grew in the wake of the Great Chicago Fire. In 1882, millionaire Potter Palmer moved to the area from the Prairie Avenue neighborhood on the city's south side. He filled in a swampy area which later became Lake Shore Drive, and built the Palmer Mansion, a forty-two room castle-like structure designed by Henry Ives Cobb and Charles Sumner Frost. Other wealthy Chicagoans followed Potter into the neighborhood, which became one of the richest in Chicago.

In the late 1980s, the Gold Coast and neighboring Streeterville comprised the second most-affluent neighborhood in the United States, behind Manhattan's Upper East Side. Today, the neighborhood is a mixture of mansions, row houses, and high-rise apartments. Highlights include the Astor Street District and the James Charnley House.

Unfortunately, the conditions of the property did not align with the advertisement, and there were several significant issues that made my stay uncomfortable and unsafe, and the lack of proper maintenance. 1. Security and Safety Concerns:· Building Entrance: The main entrance to the building was broken, which meant anyone could enter the building without restriction. There was no effective security beyond a small camera.· Side Entrance: The private side entrance was in poor condition and extremely difficult to open. The digital smart lock was malfunctioning.· Apartment Identification: The apartment did not have a visible number on the door, making it difficult to locate. · Access to Basement: The apartment was located next to ladder leading to a basement area which casued me an additional safety hazard.2. Poor Condition of the Apartment:· Temperature: Upon arrival, the apartment was freezing, and the thermostat was not functioning. Although the issue was later addressed, the response time was slow, and it was clear that there had been no prior checks on the heating system.· Unpleasant Odor and Uncleanliness.

I didn't even see a single rat in the alley way or underneath the stairs towards the entryway. The downstairs bathroom's exhaust fan doesn't even drip condensation on you when you go to the bathroom! And I didn't even have to use a spoon as a screwdriver to turn the hot water on for the basement shower! Very secure environment with all of the locks and bolts for the multiple entryways.

The best part of this property was the location and the great communication from the host.... I'm not kidding the hosts were amazing with responses.... but then everything seem to run down hill from there. There is a very nice front entry but seems front entry is only for paying renter. Super scary alley access that not only had rats (dead and alive) but there was postings about collection of them, back stair to get in the apartment were slick when wet and over all rickety to say the least. Overwilling plug-in all over the apartment had to air out upon arrival. Found mold in the 2nd bedroom, carpet on the main floor was ran down, stained and tack strip was exposed at the entries of the kitchen which would poke if you didn't have shoes on. Beds were great, towel and other toiletries were dollar store quality and limited.

There was a hole in the ceiling right outside a bedroom, and water was dripping to to floor. Carpet was soaked and smelled moldy. You can see inside the ceiling and it was very moldy. Called the property manager late evening and they told me that they needed to talk to the team whoever that was to make a decision on refund and the team would be available the next day. The next day I called again and was told that I needed to stay as scheduled to get a partial refund and they wouldn’t know how much. Floor was dirty. Shower curtain was very moldy. No air conditioning in bedrooms. Stay away from this property management. False advertisement and bad communication. They only refunded a very small amount.

We enjoyed the surrounding neighborhood. The condo itself is just ok. Spooky side entry door and ok interior. Had a good time overall.

Overall great location, in downtown Chicago! Checking in and out was very easy. Enough towels and blankets provided. Apartment was very stuffy but they did provide fans, only 1 window unit upstairs, so not a lot of air moving overall. Carpet very dirty, didn’t want to walk around barefoot. Overall good experience, you get what you pay for, with rental properties.

The entrance to the property looks like a war zone. Down a muddy, broken glass strewn back ally to an iron gate fortified by unpainted plywood (which I suppose was for privacy, clearly not for aesthetics ). Then up one flight of rickey, old, falling down staircase that must be in violation of the building code for both the steepness and tread depth. In the morning homeless people were sleeping on the discarded couch outside the iron fence. Hence probably the need for the fence. Once inside, the unit had clearly been serviced, cleaned and probably well cleaned. However, the sofas and throws in the family room were filthy with years of stains. It is understandable with an older building that things like bathrooms and doors may not be new, however all of these need repair: bathroom doors delaminating, paint that looks like it was applied with a broom, and shower window repaired(?) with duck tape. All in all the stay can be summarized by saying we left after two nights. We chose the unit for its location within the city, which turned out to be perfect. The unit itself however is in no means in keeping with residential homes in the area and hence cannot meet expectations of people renting.
