Easy day trips can be made to Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, Jamestown, and other historic sites. Charter fishing trips and boat/kayak rentals are available throughout the County. Marinas and public boat ramps are nearby. Busch Gardens and Water Country U.S.A. are about an hour away – but why leave…Mathews is the best kept secret on the Bay!
Mathew Courthouse Village is a quaint town with several restaurants, shopping, Food Lion grocery store, gourmet pizza parlor, antique stores and small boutique shops. Be sure to stop in the Visitor’s Center at Old Sibley’s Store and pick up a copy of the BluewWater Trails or find it on-line. Mathews has 2 public beaches – Haven Beach and Bethel Beach Preserve. More information can be found at Mathews County info site or google them. We are glad to talk about the house and area in detail!
We loved the property! Might have been a bad time of the year considering all of the bugs biting us. Wish we could’ve utilized the kayaks. Screened in porch was great. We absolutely LOVED Bethel Beach. Pots and pans definitely need replaced (would recommend acrylic) Water had an iron smell to it which we weren’t used to. There were more positives than negatives to this trip but definitely some surprises. Overall, we had a great, relaxing vacation! ?
Our family spent the week of Thanksgiving at the Farmhouse. It was rustic and great. The kitchen was great great to work in for the TG meal with a fabulous view to the waterfront. We loved taking walks to the public dock on the road through the marsh.
Nice, quiet, beautiful views. Easy to get to all the local sights and beaches
Kayaking to secluded beaches, dinners on the screened in porch, hours in the water--all that we could hope for out of our week.
Really great property for those looking to disconnect and be outside. Mathews is a great small town with plenty of restaurants and beaches for the dogs. House was exactly as listed and the owner was great with communication. The owner also shared a ton of good information about local spots around the area prior to our arrival which we really appreciated. Favorite spot was definitely the large screened in porch with amazing views.
This property was so much fun! We loved the vintage feel and took many walks down to the lighthouse. Thanks for a great stay!
It was our first trip to the area. Nice shops in town. Restaurants were great as well. We visited Bethal Beach and it was great.
This place is the best of both worlds - country like setting with peace and quiet, but right on the water & in close proximity to several beaches. Plus the town is quaint! We were unfortunately delayed getting on the road for our trip due to traffic and had a small hiccup at arrival getting in, but the owner was very responsive and the issue was quickly resolved. We really enjoyed our stay and are definitely considering coming for a longer stay. If you need to get away from a busy, hectic life, this is the place! Nothing fancy, but simple and rustic, relaxed. The description and pictures are on point. Great time for all - dogs, kid & adults!
We stayed here over a 3 day weekend to celebrate our family Christmas with our children and grandchildren. The house was roomy enough and the vintage feel of it was nice. Having to bring our own linens for the beds and towels was mentioned in the description, yes, but having to bring all that extra stuff was a lot to ask of visitors. So if you stay here, keep in mind that you’ll need bed linens, towels, kitchen towels, hand towels and wash clothes. Also bring all your bathroom toiletries and shower supplies. We are familiar with Gloucester and Mathews but the location of the house is pretty deep into the marsh south of Mathews. It’s a drive. House to Gloucester is 30-45 minutes. Owners replied to messages quickly. It was a great stay overall. Our family had a wonderful visit.
We were in town for a wedding and this was the perfect location and just as advertised. The house itself was quaint and quirky in all the right ways and the views were gorgeous. Loved the screened in porch and so did the dogs.
With banks of woods on each side and backing up to the water; the lightly used road in front is the only source of activity at the place. There may be better ways of spending a morning sitting on the back porch to watch the light of sunrise awaken the birds with your morning coffee -but I struggle to come up with one. The old farmhouse is charming, with a nice mix of antique charm and modern amenities. The old fashioned locks, screen doors with hook closers, vintage cabinets are reminders this place is older than it appears. Updates like the cable porch banister, retrofitted central air, wifi and large television keep you in this century. The one thing I would really like to see added in the kitchen is a light over the stove -cooking could be a bit challenging after sundown even with all the lights in the kitchen on. The owner has contracted a service to treat around the house for mosquitoes etc., and between this and screen doors / porches things are pretty well handled. There is a dock and kayaks for use, maybe about 250 yards behind the house. The owner has provided some rubber boots to use for the trip -because you will need them. At high tide the path is underwater -at low tide the path is plenty muddy. But you are in the lowland marsh country after all. Speaking of the lowland marsh, all those birds and fish are eating something -and a lot of that something wants to eat you. I am no entomologist, but it seems there are at least half a dozen types of bugs there which are happy to munch down on you. Bring your cover up clothing and plenty of bug spray for your trips to the water.
Great spot to relax and unwind. We enjoyed it!
We had a wonderful stay at the bayside retreat. Charming house with loads of character. The location was quiet, secluded, and serene. Please visit the local beaches! Wonderful stay.
This property is a nature lover’s dream. Beautiful home in a private and lovely location. The views are spectacular. We saw a variety of wildlife as well. The home is close to the town of Mathews which has excellent restaurants, unique stores, and friendly people. I would highly recommend this property.
Large farmhouse with fantastic screened porch (where we spent most of our time) delivers in terms of bird and other critter watching: heron, egret, osprey, ducks, woodpeckers, bluebirds, deer, rabbits, and more! Only disappointment was not being able to access the kayaks due to swampiness and mosquito proliferation. Did enjoy walking to the lighthouse observation deck and hanging out at a couple local beaches. Peaceful get-away spot!
We absolutely loved our stay here this past weekend! My husband and I brought our dog and had one of the most relaxing stays we have had at any property! Very private and serene. Loved to sit on the huge deck and enjoy the sun and beautiful surroundings. The house has so much charm and was very clean and well cared for! We spent Saturday morning in town and visited the cute shops and farmers market. Can't wait to come back!
