Matinicus, Maine
Our house has a wonderful view of the ocean, Criehaven (a seasonally populated island), and the lighthouse on Matinicus Rock. The property includes a right of way to a sandy beach where few people go. There are several areas of conserved land with hiking trails nearby. The house is an antique shingle Maine cape with a new addition situated on a sparsely traveled country road. There is a field and an old barn.
Matinicus is an island 22 miles off the coast of Maine. It is the most remote of the islands populated in the winter with a year round population of around forty. It is a traditional working community that depends on the lobster fishery. There is a one room school, small church, town hall, post office, and seasonal bakery. Matinicus has dependable electricity, phone service, and internet at the small public library. The house has all modern amenities, and is suitable for up to eight.
Matinicus is accessible by the Maine State Ferry Service, air plane via Penobscot Island Air, and private ferry service. A taxi ride can be arranged for your arrival and departure through Ann Mitchell who runs the Mermaid Taxi.

David made my return to this special corner of Maine damn-near perfect. For months, I had promised my partner and our friends that Matinicus was a one-of-a-kind place. They took me at my word. Thanks to David and his magical property - the week's vacation lived up to the hype. Matinicus is no easy place to get to. David was ready and willing to help make sure that we got there in one piece, and that when we arrived the house was in pristine condition. The Free Library adds a great touch to this getaway, as you can walk down the street and rent an assortment of movies after yet another gorgeous day at the beach. Thanks again for the great vacation - I felt like I was a kid again! -Sam
We had such a wonderful stay on Matinicus! Dave is a joy to work with and was extremely communicative, going out of his way to make sure that we had an amazing time. The house is gorgeous and even bigger than expected, and it has absolutely every amenity you could hope for and more! I will definitely be trying to return, everything about the trip was perfection.
Ideally located near the big attractions in town (library, playground, post office) and the open spaces on the island's south end (Matinicus Trail, South Sandy Beach), this home felt connected to this unique community but private and restful. Otherwise as others have described. Even when the wind was blowing 25-30 mph, the house felt nearly airtight. A unique property. We hope we can be lucky enough to get back. Also, Dave was a great and thoughtful host, who navigated a fast turnaround for us between the previous tenants and our visit. Can't thank him enough for the great and memorable stay.
Property was larger than expected and nicer than expected. Great Ocean views as well!
Dave was a wonderful host, communications were quick and friendly. Location is private, quiet, close to the beach, and well stocked with everything we needed. Matinicus is far off the beaten path, but well worth the trip!
This was our first trip to Matinicus Island and we feel so lucky to have stumbled upon Dave’s house! The location at the south end of the island put us in short walking distance of the most stunning black sand beach (the walk there through gorgeous wild fields of sea grasses and wildflowers was great too). The house itself is absolutely wonderful- brand new, filled with light, fresh air, and great views. It feels like it was professionally decorated and was truly the most relaxing space we have ever rented. The deck outside spans the entire front of the house and can be accessed by three different rooms. It was the ideal spot to take in the perfectly framed view of Criehaven Island while sorting the day’s sea glass (SO MUCH seaglass!) and sand dollars (which my city kids have never seen before), prepare delicious lobster brought to us by a local neighbor, or watch for shooting stars and marveling at the Milky Way. Last, but not least, Dave, our host, as well as every single neighbor we met, made up the most generous, friendly, and helpful group of people we have ever encountered in our travels. I don’t think I have ever been on a two week vacation before and left feeling like I had made friends who I look forward to seeing again. All in all, such a special place for a family looking to breathe, recharge, and just BE.
Matinicus is such a beautiful quiet island. We loved our stay. Location was a quick bike ride to south beach. House was clean and big. We slept in the new addition. Daily trips to Eva’s bakery were a must. Found lots of rare colors of sea glass. We swam daily (with wet suits). Beach was almost always deserted. Campfire on the beach (below high water mark) and enjoyed the super dark skies. Took a side trip to Matinicus Rock aboard George’s boat and saw puffins, razorbills, guillemot, and common murre. All around a successful trip. Bikes are a must.
