Ponca, Arkansas
Our 100-year-old farmhouse has been lovingly renovated and will accommodate 6 guests. The farmhouse retains its character through its screen doors, heart-pine wood floors, period furnishings, and wood stove. Interior furnishings were chosen to provide the plain and simple comforts of the early 20th Century.
The back porch rockers afford practically the same view today as they have for one hundred years. The house, old barn and outbuildings create a setting for you to not just see the valley, but actually be a part of it.
You can be as active as you wish—or as inactive. Watch the sun wake up the valley, experience the amazing vistas of a light-free night sky, hike the many trails along the Buffalo River. Canoe, fish, cook, read, visit, explore or just laze around. This farmstay offers many ways for you to enjoy the Upper Buffalo River and the woodlands, pastures, streams, and bluffs that make up the historic Boxley Valley.
Accommodations include two bedrooms upstairs with a full bath and one bedroom downstairs with attached full bath. Common rooms include a sitting room upstairs, a living room downstairs, an eat-in kitchen, and two covered porches.
James Larkin Villines and his wife, Eliza, who built the home, did without electricity or running water until 1942; now, however, guests can enjoy central heat and air, telephone, and wifi.
We require advanced notice of at least 48 hours.
This was our 3rd time to stay at the farmhouse. Great location as it is very close to our favorite hikes and the river. We will be back!
This house is cozy. We felt like we came to grandmas. Everything we needed was supplied. The big back porch with four rocking chairs were perfect! Our morning coffee was spent out there as was our evening wine. The steers came out to greet us at the fence. We could hear the Elk. The bluebirds were plentiful. Just a peaceful beautiful weekend. It’s the top pick out of our 10 trips we’ve been on together.
We really enjoyed staying here. The house was precious and well stocked. The location was absolutely perfect since we came to see the elk. We were able to make our coffee and sweet tea and walk right out the door to see the wildlife. We will be back. Thank you!
Wonderful time at the historic farmhouse, honey pine floors, wainscotting, wall paper, iron beds, enamel sinks. all the best things of a simpler time. Here for 6 days and never even tried to turn on the tv, perfect spot to relax, enjoy the beauty that surrounds you and commune with the Lord. Wonderful collection of nature and Arkansas history books.
This is absolutely they best place in the area. Super easy access. Owners so helpful and kind
The farmhouse was amazing! We loved the history of the house. We had so much fun exploring the property! We saw the eagle at the Cold Hole! The porches were a dream come true! Sitting on the back porch in the morning and the front porch in the evening. So relaxing! We returned home so rested and restored.
Quiet, peaceful. A little hiking, fishing, animal watching (eaglet, elk, deer, hogs, bulls, rabbits), porch sitting, swimming, napping. Gazed at stars and fireflies. Listened to the rain. Drive to Harrison for dinners so I didn’t have to cook or clean it up❤️. This was our second trip. Great way to disconnect. Love this little house to escape to.
We loved the house. It was so charming and cozy. We especially enjoyed the back porch in the mornings and evenings. The location an view is calm and peaceful. The cold hole was amazing! We were disappointed with a few issues: when we sat down at the kitchen table to eat, it was covered with ants. There was a very dirty runner on the table that was stained and full of crumbs and dried food. We found ant spray in the closet so we cleaned the table, wiping away the crumbs and ants, and sprayed the table legs with ant spray. There were also spiders and spiderwebs in the bathtub which I had to clean out before i could use it. Lastly, the grill was caked with food chunks (which we cleaned) and would not flame and heat as it should. Overall, we loved the house but, considering the cost for the weekend, expected to have fewer issues than we did.
The farmhouse is charming, comfortable, and quaint. We enjoyed the cold hole and well-stocked kitchen. Thanks!
This place is a gem. I almost hate to let the secret out but the owners deserve all the business they can get. The location and atmosphere is fabulous if you enjoy the countryside and a bit of old fashioned charm. Checkin was completely effortless. The river access was great and is a huge bonus. We’ll definitely be back.
We loved the farmhouse! It was so nicely furnished and comfortable! The hiking was great and the farm was a relaxing place to come home to after a long day of hiking. We will be back!
Wonderful experience!
We loved the location in relation to all the things we wanted to do in the area. The house is up to date but keeps it’s old farmhouse feel. Queen bed downstairs, two full and two twin upstairs. No cell service in this valley but house has Wi-Fi. One tv upstairs. We watched a pair of bald eagles fly around the property, cows in the pasture, a lot of elk just down the road and lots of deer to/from hiking spots. The Cold Hole would be great in summer to swim or fish- but it snowed so not this time for us. The store in Ponca is 5 min down the road. Plan to prepare most of your own meals or you’ll be driving a lot of your time. Will definitely be back! Thank you for offering to share your farmstead with the rest of us.
We enjoyed staying here. The house was really cute and clean. The kitchen was well stocked. The beds were comfortable. We really enjoyed the back porch area. The location was perfect for the hiking we had chosen. We would definitely stay here again.
Beautiful old Farmhouse! I loved sitting on the back porch! Great communication with property manager!
The setting was wonderful!!!! We enjoyed the solitude and viewing the elk!!!
Centrally located for elk watching in the Boxley Valley. Convenient access to Buffalo National River trail hiking.
We enjoyed our stay at the historic home of James Larkin and Eliza Villines in the most beautiful area of Arkansas. The personal touch made us feel like we were visiting family. Thank you for providing a place to reminisce and learn about our family history. My grandpa and great uncles shared many memories of visiting Grandpa Hez and Grandma Minnie Villines. It was an experience we will treasure forever. Grandpa remembered visiting great-grandpa James Larkin Villines when he was young. Communication with the host and her father was much appreciated. Everyone loved the house and our time together!
Ive never relaxed better in my life . All accommodations i could ever need .( Even had a crock pot ) peaceful and close to everything you want to do on on the Buffalo River . Books and games to keep my girls entertained and nephews catching fireflies in the evening times. A dream vacay for family
This is a little gem of a fully restored farmhouse in the Boxley Valley near the Buffalo National River. We lived in this area 50 years ago just as the park was established. This visit was a reunion with friends I had not seen in almost 50 years. The farmhouse was perfect. We swam in the Cold Hole and were graced by a bald eagle looking on. We will be back!
House is in a beautiful setting. Close to the water has its own swimming hole which was stunning. Couldn't be happier.
