Background on Sugar Land, Texas
Sugar Land is in Fort Bend County, Texas and is part of the Southwestern portion of the Houston – The Woodlands – Sugar Land Metro area. Sugar Land is located around 19 miles Southwest of Downtown Houston. Back in the 19th century Sugar Land was home to an expansive sugar plantation, then in 1908 many of the local plantations were consolidated into the Imperial Sugar Company. Then in 1959 as Sugar Land was continuing to grow it was incorporated as a city. Since that time Sugar Land has grown at a rapid rate largely in part to the major development that took place here sometime in the 1980’s. Between the years 1990 and 2000 Sugar Land’s population experienced a tremendous spike when it grew by a whopping 158 percent. That rapid growth in population makes Sugar Land one of the fastest growing cities in all of Texas. The 2010 census found that the population here was just under 80,000 but then at the end of 2017 Sugar Land annexed the Greatwood and New Territory communities which made the population swell to almost 118,000 as of January 2018. Sugar Land is exactly 34 square miles in size and only a few miles of that is made up of water. It should comes as no surprise that Sugar Land is still the home and headquarters of Imperial Sugar. Imperial Sugar’s crown logo is actually featured in the city seal as well as the logo.

The reason for the heat in Sugar Land is due to the winds that come from the South and Southeast which brings the heat and moisture from the Gulf of Mexico.

-Sugar Land Memorial Park – This 420 acre park can be found along the Brazos River between U.S. highway 59 and University Boulevard. Inside the park you will find 2.5 miles of 8 foot wide granite gravel walking, jogging or biking trails. There is also Veterans Memorial as well as a fenced playground and plenty of open space for various activities. There is also a 6 acre dog park called Pawn Springs which has separate areas for both large and small dogs as well as a pond and even rinse stations.
-Cullinan Park Conservancy – This park is one of the largest nature parks in the Houston area. The Cullinan Park Conservancy is a non profit group whose mission is to enhance and protect the land for the wildlife for many years to come. This park is a major attraction in the Sugar Land area.
