Lansing is located mostly in Ingham County with other portions falling in both Eaton County which is to the West and Clinton County which is to the North. Lansing is also the capital of Michigan. The population here as of 2017 was just about 117,000. The population here in 2010 was around 114,000. This portion of Michigan is the fifth largest city in all of Michigan when it comes to size and population. One of the most interesting facts about Lansing is that ten years after Michigan became a state, Lansing because the capital in 1847. According to the United States Census Bureau, Lansing is 36.68 square miles in size with a tiny portion of that being water. When it comes to the weather here it is categorized as a Midwestern Humid Continental Climate. That means that the summers are warm but not hot and the winters are very cold, dry and windy. The warmest part of the year here goes from the end of May until about mid September when the daily average high is a comfortable 72 degrees. The low for this time is just about 62 degrees. In July the weather gets a little warmer reaching a high of about 82 degrees. The cold part of the year goes from the beginning of December until mid March when the daily average high is just under 40 degrees. The low for this time period is a frigid 16 degrees. Winters here get very cold and can often drop down into single digits on any given day during the cold season. During the summer however, the temperature can reach as high as 90 degrees. So, here in Lansing the weather really does vary depending on the time of year.

The economy here in Lansing is supported by the government as well as healthcare, insurance, education and the automobile manufacturing industry. General Motors (GM) which is headquartered in Detroit has a hi tech manufacturing facility located in Lansing. This is a major boost to the local economy since General Motors is one of the largest corporations in the United States. Besides General Motors there is many insurance companies found here such as Jackson National Insurance, the Accent Fund, Auto-Owners Insurance Company and Michigan Millers Insurance Company. These large insurance companies also greatly help the local economy as well as provide countless jobs to the people of Lansing and the surrounding areas. There is also a locally owned and operated convenience store chain here called “Quality Dairy” that Lansing is very well known for. Quality Dairy has 31 locations and has been in operation since 1936. This company has been one of the largest employers in the area for more than 50 years and prides itself on their quality.

One of the most popular places in Lansing is “The Potter Park Zoo” which is a 102 acre zoo that is within Potter Park. Here you will find more than 160 species and more than 500 different types of animals in the oldest zoo in all of Michigan! This is the perfect place to take your family on the weekend. Another great spot here in Lansing is the “Lansing River Trail.” This trail is approximately 13 long and runs along the Grand River and the Red Cedar River between Michigan State University and Dietrich Park.
