Considered one of Central Florida’s fastest-growing areas, Lake Mary is a city located in Seminole County, Florida. It has a total area of about 10 square miles, of which more than 10 percent is made up of water. The city of more than 16,000 is included in the Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area.

 

The City of Lake Mary began as a village. It originally consisted of two tiny settlements known as Bent’s Station and Belle Fontaine, which were located along the railroad linking Orlando to Sanford. Its chamber of commerce was established in January 1923, making it the oldest of such in the state of Georgia. The community was incorporated as the City of Lake Mary in August 1973. It was named in honor of the wife of Major William Randolph.

 

Lake Mary is decent community for the family. It had a total population of more than 16,000 people as of 2015. The number of residents has grown by about 40 percent since 2000. The city, which is made up of six neighborhoods, boasts some of the most sought-after homes in Florida, with this reflecting in prices. It is a somewhat ideal place for people seeking to live in a relatively more peaceful area. The top employers in Lake Mary, as of 2011, included Convergys, Fiserv, The Bank of New York Mellon, AIG and Symantec.

 

Lake Mary boasts some of the best-educated people in the state of Georgia. The proportion of adult residents with at least a Bachelor’s degree is significantly higher than that of an average American city. There are about a dozen public and private schools in the area. These include Lake Mary Elementary School, Crystal Lake Elementary, Greenwood Lakes Middle School and Lake Mary High School. Public primary and secondary education is administered by Seminole County Public Schools. For college education, residents are served by the University of Central Florida and Seminole State College of Florida.

 

Major attractions in and around Lake City include the Church of the Nativity, Daytona Beach, Orlando Science Center and Disney attractions. There is a wide variety of recreational activities to be enjoyed in this area. This include golf, skate boarding, soccer, basketball and tennis. St. John’s River offers opportunity for fishing.

The peaceful setting, decent school district, high number of college-educated adults and numerous recreational activities make the city an excellent choice for families. Money magazine ranked it the fourth-best place to live in America in August 2007.
