Caerwent has a pub, a Post Office/village store and a laundrette. As the village used to be a Roman settlement there are large sections of the Roman town walls still in place, some rising even as high as 5 metres, and there are also ruins of several Roman houses and a temple. For horse lovers, there is Chepstow Race Course, offering a full calendar of activities as well as the Welsh National. The nearby David Broome Event Centre, offers exciting weekly competitions throughout the year and an annual 3-day cross country event in the neighbouring Caldicot Castle grounds. Welsh Gatehouse: Historical Castle with EV Charger

Chepstow, Chepstow, United Kingdom

brTravel and Hospitality Award Winner in the Category:brbr2024 Unique Accommodation in Wales! brbrThe Welsh Gatehouse is a beautiful historic house with modern amenities. Imagine staying in a fairy tale castle built in 1270. The thick walls, ancient windows & steep spiral staircase say 'history'. Romantic log fires keep you warm you in winter, & the thick walls keep you cool in summer. Views from the top of the tower are extraordinary over the Severn Bridges and the Brecon Beacons (NB we call this the terrace in our description below). Unique, luxurious, quirky yet comfortable.brbrTHE SPACEbrbrA luxury award winning period property, built in the time of Edward I, (we think it was built approx. 1270) - the first historical mention is in 1307 when Bogo de Knovil died and his estate reverted to the Crown. So this Grade II* medieval hideaway boasts seven hundred years of history - and with its towers it feels like you are living in a castle.brbrThe perfect couples retreat, a great base for exploring South Wales! PROPERTY IS FOR 2 ADULTS ONLY. THE PRICE IS FOR THE WHOLE PROPERTY FOR 2 ADULTS.brbrWe now accept up to 3 dogs for an extra charge.brbrSorry, no babies and no children.brbrINSIDE THE WELSH GATEHOUSEbrbrExtensively refurbished recently, the Gatehouse offers a charming loft-style living area within its ancient structure, retaining the beams, thick walls, and stone mullion windows. A deep leather sofa, wood burning stove and delightful sleeping space, all add to a uniquely romantic experience. You can even climb up to the top of the tower, to the viewing platform!brbrHeating is provided by night storage heaters and the wood burning stove. The property boasts a modern 'wet room' with shower, a fully fitted kitchen with oven and hob, fridge and small freezer. Downstairs there is a washing machine and tumble dryer if you need it. Access to the gallery bedroom is via a companionway ladder, and requires you to duck underneath a beam. If you have any challenges around mobility please look at the accessibility statement. Note we advise you to bring a couple of smaller bags rather than one very heavy and large case, as the steep spiral staircase has some 30 steps to get to the main living area, and space on the staircase is restricted.brbrOUTSIDEbrbrThe property is self contained, and has its own entrance. There is parking for two cars (one behind the other). The owners live at the other end of the garden in a sixteenth century Monmouthshire gentry house.
