This 'Old City' penthouse provides a more authentic Johannesburg experience than the Northern suburbs and is less than 20min Uber ride to Maboneng, Soweto and the Apartheid museum, making it perfectly located to experience the city's urban revival and access the coolest parts of Jo'burg brbrIf you are looking for the new city Porsche/Rolex/Jimmy Choo experience of Johannesburg, you're likely to be happier in areas such as Sandton.brbrThe apartment is less than 10 minutes walk to the closest Citysightseeing open-top hop-on-hop-off tour bus stop, about 25 minutes drive from Johannesburg airport and 10 minutes away from the Gautrain station, giving direct access to Rosebank, Sandton, Pretoria and the airport.brbrThe layout of the apartment was designed so that the main living spaces would all benefited from outdoor space and the amazing city views.brbrOn the entrance floor of the apartment there is a Master bedroom suite which incorporates a large en-suite bathroom (with a huge walk in shower as well as a separate bath) king sized bespoke four-poster bed; a second bedroom with another queen sized bed; a cupboard and a desk; a third bedroom with two extra length single beds; and another bathroom.brbrThe middle floor of the apartment has an open plan living area (with a fabulous wood-burning stove), dining area (with a huge dining table) and gourmet kitchen with slate counters, bespoke handmade cabinetry and stainless steel Smeg appliances. All of which creates an amazing homely room to hang out in. The Middle floor also has air conditioning. brbrA wrap around balcony that gives some of the best views of Johannesburg's historic old city centre, available.brbrAll of the bedrooms and the main living area have triple-glazed windows to keep the city sounds out and the warmth in, during the short South African winters. Each of the bedrooms has a fan. brbrAn iron spiral staircase leads up from the living area, to the top floor deck room, with access to the roof deck which serves as our garden. There is no lawn but it has ample seating around a fire pit, plus a built in bbq/braai/grill and hot-tub with city views.

I’d suggest you look at areas like Sandton or Rosebank, in the Northern suburbs, instead.brbrProviding a different Johannesburg experience to the Northern suburbs of Sandton and Bryanston, this centrally located, 140sqm (1,300sqft) apartment is less than 10min Uber ride to Maboneng, Braamfontein and Newtown, making it perfectly located to experience the city's urban revival and access the coolest parts of Jo'burg, whilst not having to put up with the noise that goes with actually staying in these areas.brbrIt's also less than 5 minutes walk to the closest Citysightseeing open-top hop-on-hop-off tour bus stop, about 25 minutes drive from Johannesburg airport and 10 minutes away from the Gautrain station, giving direct access to Rosebank, Sandton, Pretoria and the airport.brbrReclaimed bank doors open into a lobby that leads to the guest bedroom plus guest bathroom, on one side and through to the rest of the apartment, on the other.brbrI designed the layout to remind me of my time living in an open planned apartment.brThe Master bedroom has a 'removable wall' that allows it to open up onto the living space, creating the feel of a large studio/warehouse apartment.brbrThe guest bedroom is at opposite the end of the apartment, further enhancing the privacy when there are multiple people staying. It has two single beds, which can be combined to make a king sized bed. The third bedroom is just off of the main living area.brbrAll of the windows overlooking the main street have two sets of glazing (which is unusual in South Africa), so the street noise is drastically reduced. Whilst AC is not common in Johannesburg, especially in the protected historical buildings, each of the rooms has a fan and heating.brbrThe communal pool is on the roof of the building, so you need to leave the apartment and go upstairs in order to access it.brbrMy favourite part of the apartment (aside from the lighting in the bedroom) is the balcony that overlooks the internal atrium of the building. As it is north facing, this provides a really bright outdoor space, but is shielded from the noise of the city center.brbrI now also love that the backup power can make you forget about loadshedding!brGuest accessbrGuests will have private use of the entire apartment (aside from the locked storeroom) plus a single parking bay.brOther things to notebrThis is not one of our Penthouses and does not have Jacuzzi access.brbrThe entrance to the parking is quite tight, so please don't come with a van. It won't fit! The largest vehicles I’ve seen in the basement parking are a Mercedes’ vaneo and Toyota Landcruiser. Both had to fold in their wing mirrors to enter the parking.brbrAnd if you have a lowered vehicle, you'll scrape the underside on the ramp.brbrThe pool is a communal pool, for all the building’s residents.brbrLoadshedding (planned nation-wide, rolling power cuts) is the bane of all homes across South Africa, right now.brbrWe have invested in a backup power system for the main interior lights and WiFi in this apartment, that will keep them operational during bouts of loadshedding.brbrThere rest of the building is not covered by the back up power, so expect things like the lifts and the building’s water pressure pumps, to be impacted if loadshedding is implemented by the power authority.

I’d suggest you look at areas like Sandton or Rosebank, in the Northern suburbs, instead.brbrProviding a different (some say more authentic) Johannesburg experience to the Northern suburbs, it is less than 10min Uber ride to Maboneng, Braamfontein, Newtown, Joziburg lane and 1Fox street, making it perfectly located to experience the city's urban revival and access the coolest parts of Jo'burg, whilst not having to put up with the noise that goes with actually staying in these 'lively' areas.brbrMany don't realise that Johannesburg is also a pan-African cultural centre. The location of this apartment gives much easier access to those aspects of our city, including the sights and sounds that come with being in a developing African city. If you are looking for the pristine Porsche/Rolex/Jimmy Choo experience of Johannesburg, again you're likely to be happier in areas such as Sandton.brbrThe apartment is less than 10 minutes walk to the closest Citysightseeing open-top hop-on-hop-off tour bus stop, about 25 minutes drive from Johannesburg airport and 10 minutes away from the Gautrain station, giving direct access to Rosebank, Sandton, Pretoria and the airport.brbrThe layout of the apartment was designed so that the main living spaces would all benefited from easy access to the outdoor space and the amazing city views.brbrOn the entrance floor of the apartment there is a Master bedroom which incorporates a bath and en-suite and WC ; a second bedroom which has an extra length queen bed; and another shower room with WC.brbrThe middle floor of the apartment has an open plan living area (with a fabulous woodburning stove), dining area (with a 6-seater dining table) and gourmet kitchen with granite counters, bespoke handmade cabinetry and stainless stove. All of which creates an amazing homely room to hang out in. This room also has air conditioning.brbrAll of the downstairs bedrooms have triple-glazed windows to keep the city sounds out and the warmth in, during the short South African winters. Each of the bedrooms also has a ceiling fan.brbrExit the back door and an iron spiral staircase (shared with the apartment next door) leads up to the private roof deck (exclusively for this apartment) which serves as our garden. There is no lawn but it has a Jacuzzi, bbq/braai, a dining table and swinging day bed.brbrThe apartment also has a solar powered hot water systembrbr3 things guests like about my place...brIt's 5 minutes away from the party capital of Maboneng, but far enough away to be quiet at night.brChilling out on the amazing roof terrace.brThe open plan main floor, with back up power that can make you forget about loadshedding, the amazing kitchen and roaring fireplacebr3 things they don't like...brIt's not in a posher suburb like Sandton.brThe Jacuzzi takes a long time to heat up.brThe spiral staircase that leads to the roof is quite narrow.brGuest accessbrGuests will have the whole apartment plus access to the communal (shared) penthouse pool.brOther things to notebrIt is one of the oldest buildings in town, there are often film shoots happening either in the building, or on the surrounding streets, at the weekend (the area looks like NY or London, but is cheaper and has better light). They're sometimes a bit of a pain as you may have to wait for a break in shooting, to get past.brbrThere is quite a distance between the solar hot water tank, on the roof, and the bathrooms, so you need to run the taps for a couple of minutes to get the hot water.brbrThe entrance to the parking is quite tight, so please don't come with a van. It won't fit! The largest vehicles I’ve seen in the basement parking are a Mercedes’ vaneo and Toyota Landcruiser. Both had to fold in their wing mirrors to enter the parking. .brbrThe air conditioning is in the main living/kitchen area. Bedrooms have fans.brbrWe have invested in a backup power system for the main interior lights, WiFi and tv in this apartment, that will keep them operational during bouts of loadshedding.brbrThere rest of the building is not covered by the back up power, so expect things like the lifts to be impacted if loadshedding is implemented by the power authority.brbrFrom cold, the hot tub takes 4-5 hours to heat up. For safety reasons, we cannot leave it running when nobody is in the apartment.
