Bakewell is a well-known town, not only for its tasty Bakewell Puddings, but for its shops, restaurants and pubs, as well as the renowned local farmers market. Situated within the Peak District National Park, Bakewell has something for everyone, from stately homes, such as Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Hardwick Hall and Lyme Park to the rugged, dark and limestone White Peak, which are all close by. Impressive caverns, such as the Blue John Cavern in Castleton and Little John’s Grave in Hathersage, are not to be missed, along with a trip to Buxton to visit the famous Buxton Opera House, designed by the same designer as the London Palladium, or the newly refurbished Crescent with its shop and spa. We recommend that the best way to get around is by car, however If you just want to don your boots and set off straight from Welford House, there’s an obvious choice. Chatsworth is about a 10 mile round trip on foot. Start by walking to the end of Granby Road and cross the love locks bridge over the river. Head around the front of the cattle market and follow the signs for the Monsal Trail. You’ll see up on the hillside that there’s a golf course between you and the trees on the horizon. You need to cross the golf course and go up through the woods. After the cattle market you’ll emerge onto Coombs Road. Turn left and walk about a hundred yards until you see a footpath leading up to some houses on the hill. Take this path and just keep on it until you find you have crossed the golf course and are in the woods. Once on the path in the woods, just try to head as directly uphill as possible. Sometimes the path is a little hard to make out, but keep going up, not sideways! You’ll final come to a little gate in the wall at the top of the woods that leads out onto grass land. Heading roughly East North East, try to aim for the next woods on the horizon in front of you and once you reach them, stick to the wall with the woods on your left. The hill will descend and eventually you’ll come to quite a wide gated gap in the woods. Go through there and just keep going. You’ll see Chatsworth directly. This property is part of 3 in the same building & managed by myself. The other apartments are available on our profile: Apt 2 Cobblers Rest Apt 4 The Old Beams If you cannot find availability in The Eaves, please try the other 2 x apartments. Please note - there are 2 x sets of 15 internal steps up to the apartment and then a further 12 steps inside the property to access the upper floor & beds. Good for a quick refreshment in the sunbrbrThe Queens ArmsbrbrThey don’t appear to be serving food but if it’s a quiet pint, read of the paper and a chat where you can be heard, then this simply furnished pub is for you. Welcoming staff and lots of seating options. Good beer selection. Quiz nights on a Friday. brbrThe Red LionbrbrLovely looking pub, proper traditional interior. A relaxed atmosphere and cosy bar. The tap room accepts dogs. Try to eat in the bar area rather than the restaurant for atmosphere though they will try to advise you to eat in there if you are a larger party than maybe 4. Mixed reviews on this one for food. They do hot and cold sandwiches and all the traditional pub favourites.brbrWell kept cask beers. Nice atmosphere, it can get slightly too busy at times- perhaps that’s why. brbrThe Joiners ArmsbrbrSeveral rotated well kept cask beers, it’s good for trying new local beers and interesting craft beers. The Devonshire Arms has the charm and character of an historic Inn full of beams and nooks and crannies but the brasserie has a startlingly modern contrast but in a good way. Lunch and evening meals are exceptional. Again, enjoy a circular walk around the estate and end up here for a special relaxed lunch perhaps or evening meal. People talk about the quality of the food.
