We had a great time last week at Erwan and Joëlle's place. They live just up the hill and are very friendly and helpful. Being locals, they also can provide a lot of tips and recommendations. The house is brand new, very nicely and tastefully designed and equipped with anything you can think of (a great kitchen with all utensils etc). Upon arrival, we found a lot of basics in the fridge, which was very helpful. The surrounding garden is beautiful with banana trees and humming birds. The layout of the ground floor makes it very nice for everyone to relax by the pool/read/play games/cook together. It's only a 3-5 minute drive to the local market, restaurants and two supermarkets that carry anything you need. There is a lot to do close by: great beaches, snorkeling or a boat tour in the Cousteau Reserve, Zip lining, hiking the Soufriere Volcano, Hot Springs or tour an old Coffee Plantation etc. Can't think of anything that did not like about this place - highly recommended!
Villa Totobois on a quiet forested hillside was perfect for our first visit to beautiful Guadeloupe. Thoughtfully designed and equipped, Erwan and Joelle’s villa has everything we needed to enjoy our time exploring the beaches, rain forest, hiking trails in the national forest (both along the Route de la Traverse and in the south leading to La Soufriere). What a treat to settle into a new villa, with comfortable seating for relaxing after an active day; good lighting (important because the sun sets by 6 pm) for reading, playing cards/games; well-equipped kitchen; bedrooms with comfortable beds and air conditioning. Birdwatchers will find the endemic Guadeloupe woodpecker (Totobois in Creole) and other birds all around the villa; frogs and crickets provide background music. We enjoyed take-out BBQ chicken from the tiny eatery down the hill, kayaking to the Pigeons and snorkeling with the turtles at Malendure beach, exploring the river near the villa, the 4-hour Sea Tour from the Aquarium, the Friday market in Grosier, the banana museum, the petroglyph site, the tranquil Anse de la Perle (just north of more crowded La Grande Anse), the Asia-inspired tapas at Paradise Kafe in Deshaies. Our explorations were mostly in Basse Terre, but we did drive to La Pointe des Chateaux, stopping at St. Anne’s gorgeous beaches for a dip. Next time we’ll spend a couple of days on Les Saintes. As English-speakers with rudimentary French, encountering the locals (many with more-than-rudimentary English) was never frustrating and often quite amusing. The only frustrations: finding detailed English-language guides before we arrived, especially for trails in the national forest (available at the National Park HQ in Saint-Claude, and also online) and the condition of the coral reefs, tragically an issue worldwide. We enjoyed our time with Erwan and Joelle, who introduced us to some local delicacies. They were perfect hosts and their Villa Totobois is superb.
