We loved our trip to Italy and our stay in Massa Lubrense. The panoramic view of the ocean and the overlook of Capri was breathtakingly beautiful. We couldn’t stop taking pictures. The town was beautiful and Francesca was helpful and recommended a place to charter a boat and was quick to respond to our questions. Although the below were not severe inconveniences it did factor into our rating on the property. 1) We travelled for many hours, we would have liked some basic essentials like bread, eggs and cold water in the refrigerator especially when the closest mini mart required a good hike. The hosts in Venice and Rome differentiated themselves with these small gestures and even left a bottle of wine. 2) The air conditioner - it was difficult to control the temperature. It was way too cold and we couldn’t keep it stabilized. 3) The flush in the bathroom was not functioning and it didn’t get serviced. 4) The sofa covers and blankets were rough for use 5) The kitchen lacked coffee cups. There were soup bowels and small miniature cups but did not have mugs. 6) Getting to and from to the place is a challenge. It requires a good hike to anywhere and to the entrance is a steep incline. A single trip is fine but if you have to do it multiple times then it is a challenge. The taxi drivers complained. There was no food delivery service. The community should invest in a shuttle service to help the guests. 7) Ants!! 8) Some soap, shampoo would have been nice.
What can I say, all nine of us enjoyed this beautiful venue and view that is exactly as the pictures show. A number of steps down to a hot tub, or a short walk down the street to the waterfront, and a reasonable walk along the water to two pizza-serving restaurants. Nearby restaurant Funiculi-Funicula' has an extensive menu with an attached bar. The harbor is a boat tour meeting point for outings to Capri (among other destinations). There is also a tiny store ('mini-market) with very limited inventory but most essentials (bananas, dish-washer detergent, tissues, etc). also a bigger store in downtown Massa, about a 1/2 mile). This side of the Sorrentino peninsula gets the sunsets while the Amalfi coast side gets the sunrises. Francesca was super helpful arranging a dinner at Il Giardino di Vigliano (highly recommend doing this) and also the day boat tour and visit to Capri (the short tour had us rushing a bit more than we would have liked). Francesca was a super-host gladly accepting a drop-ship of a package which was waiting for us from an Italian company that only shipped to Italian addresses. We had a big car (9-person van) which was accommodated on the narrow road outside the vrbo without issue (but definitely fold-in the mirrors and park close to one side). Naples, Pompeii, Positano, Amalfi, Ravello all within reach with a car. There is a bus route to/from Sorrento but we didn't use it. Oven, dishwasher, washing machine (but no dryer). 9 people all taking showers taxes the water heater, but is easily handled with staggering morning/evening. Very strong recommendation on this property. We all enjoyed our stay! Grazie a Francesca!!
We really enjoyed our 3 night stay here over Spring Break. The location was great and the views were amazing! We walked to the harbor for a tour of Capri - highly recommend. It was great having access to Sorrento but being able to escape to our own secluded place.
When we arrived at the property after a long day of travel, I wasn't sure if I had made a good decision. The property was about 15 minutes drive from Sorrento where all of our activities were based out of. We had difficulty using the public bus system and opted to use taxis instead for most of our commuting. And we weren't sure about the electricity usage, so we didn't turn on the heat the first night, and it was very cold and the beds were a bit firm. However, this villa grew on me...alot...over our 3-night stay. First, the view. It is unbelievably beautiful. I have stayed in Sorrento before and the view from this villa is much better. It is captivating. In fact, the location/view almost makes the rental worthwhile on its own. Second, our hosts Francesca and Lorenzo were very friendly and very helpful. Language was a little bit difficult since we are not fluent in Italian, but through texting and in-person communicating all went well. Third, although the electricity was a concern, we found that didn't even use 40% of the allotted amount before being charged overage fees. So, we could have used the heat that first night! It was April and a little rainy and cooler than normal. But finally, Massa Lubrense!! What a beautiful area! And specifically San Montano where the villa is located. We loved the people. We loved the food. The Spaghetti alla Nerano we had in the amazing il Cantuccio was unforgettable, as was the rest of the meal, the best we had in Italy. So, would I go back to this villa? I would but with a few caveats: I would probably rent a car next time to avoid the taxi and bus usage. I would also love to see the bed mattresses made a little softer. But other than those two things, absolutely I would take my family back again. It was a wonderful stay and great launching pad for trips to Capri and the Amalfi Coast.
Our two families (4 adults and 5 teens) had a wonderful stay here. The views from the terrace are absolutely amazing, and we spent many hours taking them in with a coffee or glass of wine. You can walk to the beach, which has a nicely protected swimming area and snack bar, and to Marina Lobra for dinner and any boating excursions. The area is very hilly, so be prepared for some exercise! Francesca was a very responsive host. Our only negative, and the reason for 4/5 stars for cleanliness, was that we had daily issues with ants in a few of the rooms. They seemed to be attracted to our kids' adolescent funk and dirty laundry for some reason (more so than, say, the kitchen). There was insecticide available in the villa, so we managed fine.
Our group of 6 had a wonderful 4-week stay at Villa Penelope in September. The rating reflects what we view as the quality of the place for the price we paid. Starting with the booking process, Maria was very quick to respond to all the questions I had. We were met in Massa Lubrense by Lorenzo who we followed to the villa and he did a full walkthrough to explain everything. It was very clean and the pictures are pretty accurate. The best feature of the place is the large covered loggia where we ate all our meals. It is warm and bright but protected from too much sun and keeps the rain out. The views of the sea, Capri and even the suburbs of Naples and the island of Ischia are fantastic and every evening you can watch the sun set. The kitchen was adequately equipped although some additional serving dishes would be a great addition. The beds are very firm but that is the norm in Italy. There is also a hot tub and small garden area which we did not use. We found the owners very responsive whenever we had a problem or question. Lorenzo was wonderful and always had time for a bit of conversation. We especially love being able to walk down the road, and down the (many) steps to the water. The breakwater makes it very protected for swimming and the steps into the water means you don't had to walk on the pebble beach. They provide beach chairs if you like to relax by the water. It is easy to walk into Massa Lubrense on a footpath or to catch buses at the top of the road to Sorrento or local villages. If you like walking and hill climbing, it is a great place to be.
We have been five days back at home again after our wonderful holiday at Villa Atena (2 days) and and Villa Penelope (5 days). The villas were even much better than in pictures. The view to Capri and over the see every morning was wonderfull. We all want to thank you all. Our staying was much better than we expected, it was superior class staying! Everything went so well, the houses were perfect, really luxory villas, weather was nice and warm and you as hosts were so nice. Thank you all ! I will miss Italy and Massa Lubrense and I think to come again some day. I liked very much allso Massa Lubrense because it was not a tourist town/place but nice little Italian village with its nice little foodshops. It was very easy to drive to Pompei, to Positano and to Sorrento from Massa Lubrense and those drips took only max about an hour to those places. Thank you all so much, there has not been a day yet when we haven 't talk about Villa Penelope and Italy! We wish you a very nice summer ! The family from Finland
My wife, daughter and I spent a fabulous week at villa Penelope. It was everything we expected from the detail and pictures. A perfect setting with a direct view of Capri. Masa Lubrense, about a miles walk is a delightful local town with some great restaurants.
My wife and I and our two daughters stayed for a week at Villa Penelope and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We actually extended our stay as we were enjoying it so much and were rather sad to leave. Maria and Lorenzo were very helpful and friendly. The villa was spotless, well laid out and the views of Capri and the sea are incredible. Massa is a nice little town and we were glad we stayed here rather than Sorrento. It is a beautiful area for hiking among lemon trees as well marked trails traverse the peninsula. highly recommended and we hope to return one day. Thanks very much Maria and Lorenzo!
We truly enjoyed staying at Villa Penelope! It helped to make this portion of our vacation very special. The villa is lovely, just as pictured on the web site. The view is stunning! The villa was very clean and comfortable and the surrounding gardens and patios were very enjoyable. We especially appreciated the owners' warm hospitality and prompt service when we needed anything. Villa Penelope is within easy access to nearby restaurants and shops. We did have a rental car, but it is easy to use a taxi as well. Just ask the owner and he will set you up. A car is not essential. We LOVED staying there and recommend it to anyone looking for a vacation home! I'm sure that any of their other properties are just as great.
