Hale Kai means Ocean House, and it's easy to see where this home gets its name. At this oceanfront escape on the cliffs of Hawaiian Paradise Park, you'll enjoy beautiful, unobstructed ocean views and a large wraparound deck where you can barbecue, dine in the sun, and glimpse passing whales, turtles, and dolphins. Whether you're planning a family vacation or a romantic escape - proposals have even happened on this deck - you'll love having wall-to-wall glass doors for watching the waves crash on the cliffs.
Hale Kai is located in the Hawaiian Paradise Park neighborhood, which sits just 17 miles south of Hilo and 12 miles north of Kapoho. You'll be half a mile from an oceanfront park on Beach Road, just across the neighborhood from a two-mile trail that leads through the jungle out to swimming access at Ha'ena (Shipman) Beach, and a few minutes from a grocery store, several cafes, and a gas station in Orchidland. Pahoa's cute shops are only 10 miles away, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is about a 30-mile drive from the house.

We loved how the entire back of the house was windows, offering an incredible view of the ocean. The deck right behind it was walled with glass, so the view is not impaired at all. The home was very clean and very comfortable. We grilled our dinners and made breakfast in the nice kitchen. It was fairly warm when we were there (unseasonably so) and so we really appreciated the whole-house fan
Really great location. The house, however, was obviously cheaply built and cheaply decorated. It was also hot as heck! No insulation apparently, and no blinds in the great room to block the heat from the sun. There were ceiling and floor fans, but the ceiling fans were noisy. The kitchen was not well outfitted--as though someone made a list of utensils but had never cooked. We had a great time, but I will look for alternatives to Vacasa the next time I am looking for a vacation rental
We were thrilled to come back to Hale Kai for another stay. The home is even more comfortable than before. Great home base for Hilo, Pahoa, and Volcano. Can’t beat the ocean view reading and relaxing on the lanai.
We stayed on property for a hiking trip and house fully met our needs. It was fully equipped and supplied even with a bag of ice in freezer. The main reason we rented property is the incredible view of the ocean from the living/dinning room and back porch. House is just 50 feet from a cliff at the ocean front and seeing/hearing the waves crash into the cliff is mesmerizing. The main negative is no AC. House gets warm during day and windows need to be left open at night. While nights are relatively pleasant you need ear plugs to sleep do to outside bird chirping all night. We had problems with the coded door lock so used the emergency lock box key entire time. Property manager promptly gave us lock box code to access key. The house uses rain water system and recommends bringing your own bottled water.
Bright, fresh space with a stunning view! Mattresses were firm, kitchen was well stocked, and the space was welcoming. Highly recommend!
This property has a beautiful view and clean.
Beautiful, well-appointed, oceanfront home sitting high on lava cliffs overlooking a bay where the humpback whales birth their babies. Very clean and all the comforts of home.
This home is beautiful and comfortable. You couldn’t ask for a better view. We wish we could buy it!
Very clean and spacious with the best ocean view. The sunrise is phenomenal.
I highly recommend this well kept cheery house. My friend and I called it our home for the week. The balcony has wonderful views of the crashing waves & cliffs. Perfect place to roll out your yoga mat or gaze at the stars! Thank you to the owners.
Peaceful atmosphere where you can enjoy morning coffee and an evening glass of wine on the lanai while watching the surf and spotting whales and dolphins. The home is welcoming, comfortable, and complete with amenities for your stay. There are plenty of options for activities, exploring the island, beach going, and just about anything you want to do on the Big Island. I will definitely return!
House was spacious, clean and well stocked. Great location if you are exploring the Hilo area, Volcanos National Park and Southern area of the island. The neighborhood was beautiful and the home was very private. The deck overlooking the ocean could not be beat. Highlight was a 2 hour hike on Puna Historic Trail that led to a tiny (very tiny) black sand beach - 5 min drive from the house and took us through a muddy trail that unfolded on the coastline with beautiful views. Would stay at this house again in a heartbeat. Easy check-in / check-out process and no problems whatsoever.
The view was to die for!
This home was lovely and it's position on the cliff overlooking the ocean was incredible. I spent a great deal of time watching waves and birds. It's away from the crowds but still a reasonable drive from Hilo or the volcanoes national park. We absolutely loved it here and did not want to leave.
This house is incredibly located on the cliffs south of Hilo, and while there is no beach, the waves crashing against the lava cliffs and beautiful sunrises make this place very special. We had a wonderful stay managed by Vacasa. Directions were clear, check in/out process simple and the property was very clean and had all the amenities you may want and then some: boogie boards, snorkeling equipment, binoculars. The outdoor patio is perfect for enjoying a breakfast or dinner and listening to coqui frogs in the nearby jungle. The whole-house fan negated the need for the A/C with all the ocean breezes and cool rain falling daily. Loved our stay, want to go again!
House was very comfortable, except a little hot (for us Canadians) when you came home at the end of the day. Cooled off nicely with the windows open and the fans, but for sleeping the room with two single beds was still pretty warm. Great views into the ocean, very private. It is quite a drive for any groceries, restaurants, activities ....but that's what it takes to get the waves crashing as you sip your evening cocktail
We loved this house and grounds. The house was hot in the afternoons but cooled off at night. Some of doors were tricky to lock and unlock. Due to no street sign, directions to house were hard to follow the first time around.
