The Space:

Enjoy modern comfort in the historic Tazewell House, recently updated and designed for gathering families and friends. Walk the stroller-friendly sidewalk to beautiful Cape Charles Beach, where gentle Chesapeake Bay waves and shallow waters beckon swimmers of all ages. Visit the shops and restaurants in one of Coastal Living’s “America’s 10 Happiest Seaside Towns.” Golf award-winning Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus courses. Explore the water by kayak, stand-up paddle board, or charter a boat for touring or fishing. Experience a wine tasting at Chatham Vineyards, sample local beer at the Cape Charles Brewing Company, or try spirits at the Cape Charles Distillery.



Unwind and sip a beverage on the generous wrap-around porch, play a game, do a jigsaw puzzle, or catch up on the day’s activities in an atmosphere of Southern charm and relaxation. Inside, two living rooms provide comfortable seating and entertainment; each of the 7 ensuite bedrooms is generously-sized and provides a welcome respite from group activities. High-speed internet and smart TVs ensure access to guests’ streaming services.



The fully-equipped kitchen, including a wet bar and wine cooler, is perfect for creating tasty meals for a crowd, and two spacious dining areas allow for casual or more formal seating. The grill and generous backyard are ideal for cookouts, with shade trees and flower beds bordering the lawn. New appliances, such as a large-capacity washer and dryer, 6-burner stove, and crowd-sized refrigerator, as well as comfortable furniture throughout, ensure maximum enjoyment and comfort for all.



A fully-contained apartment on the 3rd floor, with 2 bedrooms, a large kitchenette, lounge area, office desk, and laundry facilities, is suitable for a wide variety of uses, providing increased privacy for work or relaxation. An air mattress is also available to comfortably accommodate an additional guest.

Guest Access:

We offer convenient door codes for self-check-in. Chesapeake Properties by Portoro uses convenient keyless entry for self check-in, details provided 2 weeks (or less) prior to arrival by email and text message.



• Early check-ins or late check-outs: If the property happens to be ready earlier than the standard 4 pm check-in time on the day of your arrival, in most cases an early arrival option may be available when confirmed with the main office. Late check-outs must be confirmed with main office staff prior to the date of departure.

Cape Charles is located near the southern tip of Virginia’s Eastern Shore right on the Chesapeake Bay. Cape Charles is a small town (the historic area is roughly a six block by six block square) that sits on the peninsula’s western coast… meaning you can sit on the beach in Cape Charles and watch the sunset right over the water. On the Chesapeake Bay, not the Atlantic Ocean, the water is calm and shallow. - All guests staying at an Chesapeake Properties Vacation Rentals by Portoro (Portoro Homes) are required to sign (esignature) a rental agreement and complete identity registration.

- Age restrictions apply. Reservation holder must be 25 years of age.

- Upon arrival, we aim to ensure your safety, proper access to the home, and guest features. Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out to Chesapeake Properties by Portoro directly.

- Known damages incurred during your stay must be reported to the property manager immediately.

- Before check in, we will send you detailed directions to ensure a seamless arrival.

- Check-in time is 4:00 p.m. Check-out time is 10:00 a.m.

- We cannot guarantee early check ins or late checkouts. When it is possible to check in early or check out late, there will be a fee for anything outside of a one hour window within our standard times. If your need for an early check in or late check out is great, your best option is to book an additional night.

- Some homes have cameras for external monitoring only.

- HOTEL TAX COLLECTION: In the State of Virginia and in Northampton County, all hotel and vacation rental hosts are required to collect hotel tax. We collect these taxes within the booking transaction.

- Some homes offer pools/hot tubs, or access to communal pools. There is no guard around the water features when available. Use at your own risk.

- This is a No Pets property. A daily rate fee of $150.00 will apply for violations and you may be asked to vacate the premises with no refund at the discretion of the Host.

- This is a No Smoking property. Penalty fees for violations will apply and you may be asked to vacate the premises with no refund at the discretion of the Host.

- For the safety of guests and the home, there are noise monitoring devices. These devices only measure the decibel level and do NOT record any audio.



Interaction with Guests:

Our goal is that your vacation exceed your expectations. Chesapeake Properties by Portoro communicates via email and phone. After a booking is confirmed, rental agreement will be emailed to the guest for e-signature. Check-in instructions are sent by email and text message 14 days (or less) prior to arrival date. We offer convenient keyless entry for self-check in. We do typically check in with guests by text 1-2 times during their stays to ensure a 5-star experience and remain available for any questions. We are available to guests 24/7 for any inquiries.

    11 of us got together to celebrate 50 years of friendship after meeting Freshman year in college. We've gathered annually for most of those 50 years. This was very special. The house was great! Nice and roomy which we've grown to appreciate over the years and well cared for. It was like a home. It was also so much fun to be able to walk to the beach and all the fun stores!

The house was clean and well-appointed and the property manager was very responsive during our visit. We would highly recommend Tazewell House for any large group/family gathering.

    We had four families with seven children and this house provided lots of space and rooms and bathrooms for everyone to spread out and enjoy. We’ve stayed in many houses in Cape Charles before and this was definitely top notch!

    I’m glad I read the previous review RIGHT before our arrival, so then I knew 1) toaster did not work 2) BIG BIG BIG ant problem (and a couple cockroaches)- everywhere- including a bedroom- pretty sure it followed us home. There were ant traps in the bedroom so this must not be a new issue for them. 3) tub/shower not draining 4) the landscaping needed some work. 5) dining room could not seat all of us. I was told there was a pack and play at the property by property management- but there was not. The area is wonderful, the house is extremely spacious. Thought we booked a gem, but it was just so, so.
