Sitka, Alaska
Nestled into the corner of our historic home in downtown Sitka, this apartment lives up to its name - it's a quaint, private hideaway that comes with a dedicated car, two kayaks, and two bikes.
The Stowaway is located on a small street in the heart of town, just up from Crescent Harbor. With its hidden entrance, and maritime-themed furnishings, the apartment has the feel of a dockside Speakeasy. Great for folks wanting to get work done, while breaking free for afternoon boat or bike rides.
The space
As its name might suggest, the Stowaway has a hidden feel to it. Nestled into the bottom corner of a larger 1930s clapboard house, the apartment feels discreet and cozy. Finished out with yellow cedar, the apartment has a distinctly nautical feel. There are two rooms, each with windows giving onto green space. A small but efficient kitchen, with modern sink and stove, and a large living room. Each room has an office space, making it great for folks looking for a work retreat, or a small family eager to experience life in Sitka's downtown.
Guest access
You will have the entire one bedroom apartment, along with a private entrance. You will have your own washer and dryer, along with access to a car dedicated to the apartment. There are bikes and kayaks in our garage, and by the harbor - great to bike out the road, or to take a paddle and play with whales.
Other things to note
The plumbing is old, and can be a bit clanky. You hear the sound of water draining through the copper pipes, which are visible in the ceiling.
Otherwise, the apartment is sweet as can be. It's nearest to the ocean, just out your front door. You can see Sitka Fine Arts Campus from the end of the street, and sometimes whales surfacing in Eastern Channel. Grab one of the kayaks from the stand at the bottom of the ramp, and paddle out to Eastern Channel to catch rockfish for rockfish grilled cheese sandwiches. Or have morning coffee at the garden table set up on the patio outside the entrance. The apartment couldn't be more convenient, or better-equipped for folks wanting to experience life in town.
Well decorated with a nautical vibe. Hosts were very responsive and respectful of privacy. Great perks including a washer and dryer (key after kayaking and getting soaked with ocean water), a car for local transportation and to/from airport. The kayaks were ready to go at the water. We did not use the bikes that were also included. Plenty of space for the 4 of us while visiting our adult son (pull out and 2 bedrooms) with all kitchenware and linens we needed. Great location with amazing scenery and so much to do in Sitka
The Stowaway is a cozy unit with a great location - steps away from the marina, park, and downtown, but tucked in an alley with little traffic. The unit is well furnished and equipped with helpful amenities but noise from the upstairs space (footsteps and all water use whooshing through the pipes) is really noisy - particularly at 2:00 a.m. We did not use the car, bikes, or kayaks. Use of the car would have been nice, as there is virtually no public or rental car transportation available at the airport (we had a friend pick us up) but the process was unclear on how to get the keys. The welcome letter in the unit is outdated and needs to be replaced with current property management contacts. If you are a heavy sleeper, all other aspects of this rental were fantastic and Sitka was incredible.
The hosts were warm, friendly and very
Rachael and Brendan are great hosts! The rental is a great space in a great location. I highly recommend staying here!
Brendan and Racheal were great. The location is ideal, loved wandering through the neighborhood Had everything we needed. Great views
Awesome property. Well positioned in the heart of Sitka.
Perfect central location, tucked into a quiet street. Rachael and Brenden were great hosts; very accommodating.
We enjoyed our stay. Excellent communication and assistance. We were pleasantly surprised. Many thanks. See you again when we return :)
Having a car to get around was a surprise perk. Thank you.
My brother and I had a great time staying at this property. Rachel and her team were very communicative and helpful. The place was spotless and welcoming. Comfortable beds, accommodating kitchen, and very close to the harbor we fished from. Having use of a vehicle was an awesome bonus! I highly recommend staying here!
