The C-Ray Cottage - Life is better with a little sand between your toes.......
We are big believers that every Home has a story.......a story rich in happiness and sadness, struggles and successes - that creates its very essence. The C-Ray Cottage has a story you will love.......
This adorable Bayfront Waterman's Cottage exudes that quintessential Chincoteague Charm. The C-Ray Cottage is the former working office of C. Ray Jester, a Chincoteague Original, who was the owner and manager of Jester Bros. Oyster Company. Born in 1892, he began working the water at an early age - seeding & growing Chincoteague salt oysters. By 1925, C. Ray had a fleet of 3 boats, and was operating the oyster shucking and canning operation here.
Ray worked in this €˜cottage€™ office and on the water until he had a massive heart attack in 1953. Luckily he survived, but could no longer work the business. He enjoyed his later years with his family €“ 2 children, 6 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren until his death in 1971. He would be pleased to know that one of his great-grandsons has followed in the family footsteps - Dan Davis of Captain Dan€™s Tours is considered one of the best and most knowledgeable tour guides on the island! For more information about the Jester family and their history of working the water, please visit Dan€™s page.
While you€™re here on the island, you may notice that the Cottage is not in the architectural style of most homes on Chincoteague. That€™s because Ray had the cottage moved to Chincoteague from Hog Island in the €˜20s, along with other structures that he had purchased. The C-Ray cottage originally sat on the other side of the larger lot, next to the water and near the street. It was moved one last time to this position in 1971 by the Owner's grandfather, Bill Jester, who then built his own retirement home next door.
The C-Ray Cottage has everything you need for a fabulous Chincoteague Experience. Located on the water's edge, the Cottage has incredible Bay Views - the perfect spot to take in our famous Chincoteague Sunsets with a glass of Pinot. Comfortably sleeping 4 with 2 Bedrooms and 1 Bath, it's just perfect for a small family or romantic getaway. House is a advertised. Loved the views from the backyard. Went to Tangier Island. Two places to catch the ferry. Excellent quick getaway.
This was our second year renting the cottage. It’s in a nice spot with very little traffic. Out back you have a nice view of the water and boats passing in the evening. While small, it is the perfect spot to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the town.
We had a great time here as a family for a few days. The house has a lovely view and is in walking distance to a good number of local restaurants and shops.
Lovely little cottage perfect for a few days get away. Clean and enjoyed the bay view from the porch!
We had a great time in the SeaRay Cottage! It's a great place for a small family or couple. The master bedroom is spacious and has lots of natural lot. The second bedroom acts as a hallway to the bathroom and master bedroom, but it was never an issue. We could tiptoe through after our kids were asleep. Pros: Great Location Water-Front Beautiful View Amazing Sunsets Two screened in porches Full Kitchen (no dishwasher) Wifi Smart TV Washer and Dryer Cons: Bathroom Ceiling is low, you have to bend over to wash your hair if you are over 6 feet tall. AC in front room had a hard time keeping up in the heat of the day
We enjoyed the cottage. Very appropriate for our small family. Great location .
We really enjoyed this house. It is in a great location and we could walk to so many things and we really enjoyed the porches and view.
We had a great time renting this house... the location was great (easy walking distance to the Main St. restaurants and shops) and we enjoyed the beautiful water view out the back. Do be aware that if you are using the second bedroom, the layout is such that anyone sleeping in the master bedroom will have to walk through the second bedroom to get to the front living area or the bathroom.
This home has extremely low ceilings and windows, which is quite disorienting. I am 5’10 and my head actually touched the ceiling in the bathroom. I wish we had been warned about this because it was claustrophobic at times. The AC window units were very loud which made it difficult to hear the television. The view off the backyard was beautiful and great for birdwatching. My son had a wonderful time fishing and crabbing in the backyard. I wouldn’t stay at this home again because of the size but the location was great.
This little house was the perfect spot for my wife and I to spend some time away from our son and dog. The location is excellent with beautiful views of the bay and within easy walking distance to shops and restaurants. I will say that the description of the floor plan does not make it quite clear that you have to walk through the second bedroom in order to get to the only bathroom and the master bedroom. Since it was just my wife and I, it wasn't a problem. However, it would not have worked if our young son was with us as he would not have slept well with us moving through his room to get out of ours or to use the bathroom. Overall had a great experience on the island and would love to go back in the future.
