LOCATION: The short term rental sites show that we are near Amelia Island and Fernandina. As the bird flies, that is correct. You can see Amelia Island and Fernandina from the back porch. However, unless you are traveling by water, it will take about 45 minutes to drive to Amelia Island or Fernandina. However, It is a scenic drive, much of it along the St John's River and the Atlantic Ocean. The ideal traveler for Susie's Seaside Sanctuary would be looking for a spot to enjoy some time away from civilization in a natural, rural setting. The REAL Florida, as the Park Service says. If you want to get an idea of how far away we are from you possible destinations, put Black Hammock Island Community Center in you map program.
GUIDELINES FOR GATHERINGS
Unfortunately, we are no longer allowing large parties or gatherings. If you are requesting an exception or clarification, feel free to contact us.
GUIDELINES FOR USE OF ADDITIONAL AMENITIES.
Beginning January 1, 2024, we will require a release from liability for the use of the dock, and other outside the house amenities. We suggest you bring your own approved life vests if you plan on using the dock or participate in any water related activities.
INTERNET AND TV
We currently have an upgraded internet connection. (400 Mbps) so you should be able to work or use your favorite apps. Cable TV is not available.
The dock and adjacent buildings are considered common areas. It is not common, but the host or manager may use the dock from time to time, while being diligent to respect your privacy.
Check in instructions: Because we live close by, we just leave the door unlocked for you. There is a notebook at the base of the inside stairs with 2 sets of keys, wifi log in info and other information. Otherwise everything is self explanatory. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us. Thank you.
Below is a copy of the release of liability that will need to be acknowledged before using the dock or other amenities.
Release From Liability
I understand that the use of amenities may increase the risk of bodily injury and require additional vigilance. The dock, kayaks, canoe and other water dependent activities may include additional risk and require awareness of the complexities of the associated activities. Docks are inherently slightly unlevel and users need to use more caution than on land or in a house. Dock and water activities require the user to be vigilant with regard to the safety precautions required. All boaters, canoers, and kayakers are required to wear approved life vests. It is suggested that you bring your own life vests and watercraft to ensure good fit and efficacy. Any life vests, watercraft or other games or equipment provided by the owner or manager of Susie’s Seaside Sanctuary are not guaranteed for fit, safety or efficacy. Other safe boating tips and requirements (which can be found on line) shall be observed as well. Tides, currents and weather are constantly changing factors and must be considered when participating in water activities.
We suggest you download the Saltwater Tides App https://www.saltwatertides.com/ if you are planning on participating in water activities. In order to use the app successfully, you will need to have the following information: The Region is Florida. The Area is Nassau Sound and Fort George River. The Zone is Nassau River. The Site is Nassau River Entrance. Insert the date of activity, then press “Get Tides”. The creek that runs behind the house is tidal and it is suggested that you participate in water activities from about 3 hours before high tide to about 3 hours after high tide. Using the creek at low tide may result in not having enough water to float back to the dock until the next high water or require walking through the marsh.
The creek that runs behind the house connects to the Nassau River, which is navigable to the Intracoastal Watery, Nassau Sound, and the Atlantic Ocean. Supervision is required for children and vigilance is mandatory for a safe outing.
There are chickens on site that are confined to pens. Entering the pens increase the risk for bodily injury due to uneven terrain and potentially aggressive roosters and hens. Eating the fresh eggs requires vigilance in cooking food fully to reduce the possibility of food borne illness.
Outside cats bless the property and carry risks associated with domestic animals.
I have read and understand the above and fully release the owner(s) and managers of Susie’s Seaside Sanctuary from liability for injury or damages incurred during my stay. I also certify that I am the primary booker and qualified to sign for the entire party staying at Susie’s Seaside Sanctuary during my booking. I will also make anybody visiting or staying during the booking aware of the above.
Simply message us that you have read the release and agree to the terms. Thank you so much for your interest. We will do everything we can to make your trip enjoyable.
Peaceful and lovely environment full of serenity & Heavenly melodies...
The house was comfy for the six of us. If you love a comfortable house surrounded by nature this is the place for you. We crabbed and fished from the pier. Was mesmerized by watching the chickens and the ducks and feeding and petting the cats. We cooked wonderful meals in the kitchen and had great family time in the beautiful house. Hope to come back in the future.
Beautiful property with charming accommodations. Very relaxing.
Wrap around porch, back deck provides spectacular view of morning sunrise. Artwork unique. Property Manager very personable. Dumb waiter would help with stairs for bringing in suitcases.
Love our stay here. Very quite and tranquil just what we needed to get away and unwind.
Great back porch
We enjoyed our time at this unique house. The sunrise views off the back porch are amazing. Although the house is not close to anything, we took our teens to Ponte Vedra beach one day and to Fernandina Beach another day. Both were enjoyable. We loved the quiet, spacious house and how cozy it was. Great vacation spot!
Jack was gracious (more than I could ask for) with my boys, and the property was absolutely lovely!
Good. Was farther away from everything than we thought. Mayport ferry being closed didn’t help.
We were looking to unwind with peaceful, quiet breezes. The property was incredible, and the soothing winds across the marsh were therapeutic. So happy we found this place!
We had a nice week at this property. The view of the marsh with the dock is incredible. The property was neat and clean and the kitchen was well stocked. The house is nicely decorated. It was wonderful just to sit on the porch and watch all the birds in the marsh. It comes with a couple friendly cats as a bonus. We definitely would come back.
The house is beautiful and the views were wonderful. There was so much wild life to enjoy. The sun rises were captivating. The house is spacious and clean. Comfortable beds. Plenty of room to unwind. We would highly recommend staying here.
I could not have asked for a better stay. Drew and Jack were amazing hosts. The property was clean and clearly well-loved. We spent quite a bit of time enjoying the hammock and kayaks. Evenings on the back porch and dock were lovely. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back soon!

We had the most amazing time my daughter's birthday was the date that we stayed they flew in from Arizona , along with my 2 grandsons my Mother in law has Alzheimer's and dementia and she was with as well and I mean she even had A-blast it has something for everyone of all ages I can't suggest enough how we we had the most amazing time we didn't want to leave the property to go anywhere and do anything we just wanted to stay and they have everything imaginable pot's pans food everything ! Loved the view - it truly made our stay worthwhile! Overseer and owner were very helpful!
This is a white place away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
We loved this house. Kayaking was a blast! Beautiful home.
We had a short 3 day stay at one of the most unique VRBO’s. The house was spacious and filled with the most interesting art and furniture. We thoroughly enjoyed the views across the Marsh and Nassau river to Amelia Island. The kitchen had everything you needed to make anything you wanted. The beds were the most comfortable we’ve ever had (I even brought 2 toppers which stayed in the box). Jack and Drew were very gracious and provided everything we needed. Thank you for sharing your home with us (which included my almost 99 year young mother)!
The pictures do not do it justice.. when I opened the doors the 1st time, it took my breath away! Beautiful! Drew met us at the drive and was amazing! The kayaks were fun and the kids loved chasing crabs! We ventured over to Ponte Vedra Beach for the day... it's an amazing beach! The beds slept amazingly! The kitchen was perfectly stocked. The views never ending (we even saw flamingos in the marsh). Just a perfect get away! On a side note, I really was concerned that having the caregivers home so close would take away from the serenity of the home... but it didn't! Drew was always available for questions and yet we never knew he was even there. It was the easiest check out we have ever had. We cannot wait to come back!
We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend family getaway. There was something for everyone at this beautiful home to relax and play..There was plenty to do at the house and nearby recreation areas. Very attentive host and property manager! We made memories to last a lifetime.
Spacious and quiet location. Manager who lives on site is very accommodating and supplied us with fresh eggs! Delicious! We enjoyed the kayaks, hammock, grill and so many other items. Very relaxing time catching up with family.
Absolutely relaxing time. Beautiful home and view! Everything plus what we thought it works be! Jack and Drew are the best! Easiest check in and out! Beautiful home and surroundings! Would I recommend... yes! Absolutely ?!!!! Only one issue..... rubber seal in washer... molded. Have pix. That being said.. we had fresh organic eggs every morning. Fished of pier. Had a blast. Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again! No such thing as perfect!
The house was beautiful, comfortable, perfectly equipped and on a picturesque setting. The owner was very friendly and helpful. The caretaker, Drew was just plain wonderful. All in all it was a great place to stay.
