La Pointe, Wisconsin
Welcome to one of Madeline Island’s newer and unique properties great for medium to large groups (sleeps up to 24 in beds).
This property sits on over 5 acres with 300 feet of waterfront. It faces western sunsets and is surrounded by beautiful forest. There are two buildings: a lodge and a guest cabin. Bud’s Oasis (a fun local bar) is located at the entrance of the driveway. The property is within walking, biking or running distance to La Pointe where there are restaurants, bars, shops, a library, a public sand beach, the ferry docks and a golf course. People can purchase a daily or weekly pool and hot tub pass from the Inn on Madeline Island (which is located next to the marina).
Please note: we charge $15 per person per night over a total of 6 people. We also charge a $325 non refundable cleaning fee and a $500 garbage/recycling removal fee if garbage is not disposed of by tenants (the raccoons are a big problem). There is a garbage and recycling collection facility on the island (http://townoflapointewi.gov/cms/files/recycling_guide.pdf).
Main Building:
The main lodge was finished in 2014. It is a light filled, lofty open space with a pine ceiling and cedar trim. It boasts a gourmet kitchen with a Décor stove, commercial sized fridge/freezer and two dining areas. Twelve-foot tall windows allowing for incredible views of the trees and lake surround the sunken living room area. In the same room: games and books line the shelves and a play area for children is great for keeping an eye on the little ones. A large loft is complete with a ping pong/air hockey table and comfortable seating for TV viewing. The TV also has Blue Ray, a DVD player. The loft has a queen sized futon.
There are three bedrooms plus a sleeping area in the loft. Two are master bedrooms each with a king sized bed. One has a pull out love seat (full sized) and the other has a queen/double bunk bed. The third bedroom has a queen – this bedroom is another upstairs area - with a twin bed. The TV loft has a queen futon. There are two full bathrooms and one half bath. One of the bathrooms has a tub; both have showers.
Two west-facing decks face the lake; both of them are off the master bedrooms. One is large and covered while the other is smaller and more intimate. There is a combination charcoal and gas grill outside the front door.
Guest Cabin:
The guest cabin was finished in 2002. The guest cabin is a cozy, two-level and timber-framed house with a sauna. It has a kitchenette with a Wolf stove, a small refrigerator and convection oven. There is a TV with Blue Ray, a DVD player. A deck off the upstairs living/kitchen area faces the lake. There are two bedrooms. One with a queen size bed and twin bunks and the other with a double bed bunk bed with a single trundle bed pull out. A queen sofa bed is in the living area/kitchenette. There is a full bath with a walk-in shower next to the sauna while the other half bath is upstairs.
There are stairways leading to a 78 foot long crib dock with a 50 foot L added to it which adds over 1000 square feet outdoor area. There is a small beach on either side with mixed sand and rock bottom. We have parked one 28 foot boat on the inside of the L of the dock with no problem.
This is an incredible retreat for large or small groups. Plan a family reunion or a get-away with friends. This could be a perfect place for a weekend seminar or workshop as well. We do not allow weddings to take place at our cabin.
Watch the sunsets while sitting under the canopy of pine trees. Listen to the birds all day and the frogs and owls during the night. There is a local bald eagle with a nearby nest. In the winter, there is a mating coyote pair who like to hunt on the ice between the island and the mainland. We also have a local ermine family who are incredibly adorable but very shy and fast. Swim, canoe or kayak in crystal clear water in summer or snowshoe, cross-country ski or snow mobile in the winter.
Some Rules:
Dogs are allowed with a one-time $75 charge for each dog. They are not allowed on any furniture and please trim their nails before coming. When you leave the cabin for an outing: bring the dog along, kennel or tie them up outside. Also clean up after the dog!
You will need to bring all your own food, beverages, condiments and spices. Beach towels are not available so please bring your own. Bathroom towels cannot be used as beach towels or for wiping dirty animals clean.
It was a great escape for extended family on the island. We enjoyed the lake, fires and plenty of family time together.
If you're looking to immerse yourself in nature, Sunset Bay's lodge, guest house, 5 acre woods and 300 feet of lakefront will fulfill that desire. Sunset Bay Lodge lives up to its name. The sunsets were magnificent, especially the view from the dock each evening. The lodge and guest house were beautiful, clean and comfortable. Morning walks were delightful; wildflowers everywhere, a black bear sighting one time, deer a number of times, and daily sightings of bald eagles. Our family of 12 really enjoyed the spaciousness of the lodge! We appreciated the large kitchen and dining area, the living room with seating for us all, the sauna, the whirlpool tub, the watercrafts (paddle boards, kayaks), the bikes, the grill, the deck, the games and books. No situation is ever perfect - 1. We would have appreciated the use of a washer and dryer; at least a dryer for all the beach towels and linens the twelve of us generated from swimming and showering. You will want to pack a clothesline. 2. The lights in the kitchen and dining area were unreliable, some of the lights refusing to stay on, making the lodge feel dark in the evenings. 3. It's important to note that WiFi and cell service were spotty, if that's important to you. We had one unexpected situation arise when the water pump gave out and had to be replaced. Our host was quick to respond and worked late into the night to rectify the problem. Thanks Tim. Our entire family gave our experience on the Island a thumbs up!
Our stay was wonderful. Lovely home and a private dock what more can you ask for? Perhaps a romantic husband that serenades you on the dock for your 50th anniversary.
Kitchen is well equipped with dishes and cookware, large, comfortable living room. The dock and outdoor spaces is where we spent most of our time, enjoying the outdoors and beautiful views of the lake. Good for family vacations, enjoyed it very much.
Lots of space. Great location. The sunsets are breathtaking. We had a wonderful time!
This house was absolutely immaculate when we got here. Check in procedure was quick and painless, Wi-Fi and Al amenities were wonderful including the super nice sauna! Tim was very nice when we spoke on the phone and made the stay just what we had imagined it would be. Would highly recommend this if you are thinking of staying on Madeline Island!
The place was just what we were looking for. Had a great time on Madeline island.
Loved the property! Sat outside on the pier early morning and at night for sunsets
This was our second stay at this property, and we will definitely book again. Lovely lodge and guest house with perfect location close to town. The dock is prime and the fire pit for evening gatherings is a plus. Love this place!
Property was as advertised! Worked great. Will stay there again someday!
We rented this for 24 people with kids of all ages. It was big enough for everyone to have their own space while still being together. From the toddlers to grandparents, everyone had a great time. The property was very clean and well kept. The only “issue” we had was what we thought was a futon ended up being a mattress on the ground. That said, the couple who were assigned the futon ended up using the couch and were ok with it. We accidentally popped a breaker when using both the microwave and convection microwave at the same time. Rookie mistake. The dishwasher was a little finicky but worked. The rest of the appliances were top of the line. We didn’t use the grills because we brought up our own Blackstone. There was more than enough room for the Blackstone next to their outdoor cooking area, so we had no issues there. The property is beautiful. Don’t forget your bug/tick repellent though. We had daily toddler parades to the end of the driveway everyday and there were a lot of ticks. We had all the repellents, so it wasn’t too bad, but still remember to bring it. The extra amenities were great. The books and games and toys were used by all. There were more than enough blankets, towels, etc. for our entire stay. The toilet paper… that toilet paper was an unexpected surprise. We greatly appreciate it ? Multiple people enjoyed the sauna after a jump in the lake. A great added bonus. And the dock, a private little beach, kayaks, paddle boards, etc. Our entire family was entertained. The internet was better than I expected. I was able to take a long work meeting one day with no issues. The little desk nook was perfect! Phone service on the island is sketchy, but works at the home. The island itself is beautiful. Big Bay State Park is a must. Their boardwalk through the bog is gorgeous. We went to Grampy’s and a number of the shops in ala Pointe. It was a lot of fun. A lot of money spent. The dump station is right down the road and easy-peasy. My dad made friends with the workers, as he always does. We brought our refuse on Saturday after being there for a few days and it was only $40. Much better than having it pile up. Tim was extremely communicative and helpful when we needed it. I appreciated his answering my questions before our arrival in a timely manner and addressing any arrival issues right away. We would definitely stay here again.
Hi Timothy, We had a wonderful weekend, but I was very anxious about our stay before we got there. I got no information about a security key box code that was promised, and very little accurate information about recycling and what was expected. After getting to the Island and realizing that nothing was really open yet, only a few for the marathon, it became more clear. I do have to mention how helpful Marty, at the recycling center, was for us. You do it right on the Island! Everything went smoothly after getting there and I even got a chance to visit Drew and his family, a person I helped take care of when he was 5 years old! It completed a wonderful stay! Thank you. Barb
