ENHANCED CLEANING. We have a hotel license that requires us to collect hotel taxes. You can see our hotel license in the photo section. We’ve renovated our ground floor guest flat with the same luxury finishes as our home above: custom cherry cabinetry, honed granite counters, hardwood floors, original artwork, exposed brick and two decorative fireplaces. In this 650 square foot loft-style floor through we’ve installed new high-end stainless steel appliances, offer copious closet space, and have added conveniences that we ourselves appreciate while away from home – we’re a journalist and a cinematographer who have worked all around the globe - such as a clothes washing machine and dryer, microwave, coffee maker, toaster oven, cable TV with premium movie channels including HBO, Broadband Internet --- hardwire and Wi-Fi --- DVD player, new 40” Samsung flat screen HD Smart TV with Blu-ray, which allows you to put in your own Amazon and Netflix accounts, linens, dishes, glassware, pots and pans.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW: Our space is designed as an open loft, which means there are no interior walls separating the living space and the bedroom. This is especially appealing to design savvy couples and families with small children. Some guests put the Deco screen between the beds, and while this does afford some privacy it is not a full wall.
We have up to three beds to accommodate four people: Two double beds and a large single. One double is a high end 'regular' Classic mattress and box spring. The second double bed is a convertible futon couch. The single is either a luxury Aerobed with seven firmness settings or a folding bed.
FULLY AIR CONDITIONED: Central Air Conditioning
No smoking in or near the accommodation please.

There’s a food market right across the street, the cupboards are filled with staples such as jams, condiments, coffee and tea, and we’ll set up snacks and the first day’s breakfast so there’s no need to rush out shopping. You can arrive with little more than a toothbrush and a change of clothes.
SEE NOTES FOR DISTANCE TO EACH PLACE IN INSIDERS GUIDE.
Accessibility: Just three steps down with no interior stairs, this flat is accessible to seniors and people with somewhat limited mobility.

Location:: We’re a five-minute walk from a number of subway lines: A, B, C, D, 2 and 3. The A and D are one express stop from Columbus Circle in Midtown. We can reach Times Square in 20 minutes or less. The M10 bus, which runs down Manhattan’s West Side, stops 20 meters away on the corner of 8th Avenue, and the M2 bus, which runs down Fifth Avenue, stops on the 7th Avenue end of our block. Subways, buses and taxis run 24 hours/day. Yankee Stadium is 20 minutes by public transport.
Harlem Culture:: Both historic and ahead of the curve. Best suited to young-spirited culture mavens, our all brownstone block in the heart of one of New York’s most intriguing emerging neighborhoods is surrounded by the kind of mom and pop businesses fast disappearing from other parts of town, such as rootsy inexpensive restaurants serving Caribbean, Latino, American Southern and African cuisine. This neighborhood of historic brownstones, some built by acclaimed architects such as McKim, Mead and White, is bursting with jazz haunts, famous spots from the 1940’s as well as no sign “neighborhood secrets,” which is quite the trend in New York these days.
It was a cute place, just a bit out of the way if you’re planning to do more stuff in the city. It took us quite a bit of time to get from the place to the attractions and more touristy things. Janet was very nice and easy to communicate with and extremely accommodating!
Property was close to subway, buses, and grocery store. Very comfortable bed. Nice host who provided breakfast items in unit.
Easy access to everything……apartment was great……Janet was a great host…….felt safe at all times even taking late night subways………perfect stay
Janet was an excellent communicator and we knew exactly what to expect upon arrival. The apartment was cute and clean and Janet even stocked the fridge with breakfast items and fruit for our arrival! The apartment is close to the subway making it easy to get anywhere. A great place for an extended stay in NYC.
This host and property is amazing. Janet was very personable, and went out of her way to make sure we had a great time in New York. I was concerned about staying in Harlem, but we didn't have any problems during our stay. We were able to take the M60-SBS bus to and from La Guardia airport. Access to the M2 and M10 buses are about a 5 minute walk. The A, B, C, and D trains are accessible after a 7-10 minute walk.
We spent 10 days at the Harlem Flat over Christmas. Janet was an amazing hostess! From the beginning, she met us at the door, had stocked the fridge with our favorite drinks, and gave us some tips for getting around. We became very comfortable using the subway and enjoyed being removed from the insanity and crowds that occupy the midtown area. We loved having a washer and dryer, a kitchen, and a tub shower. The apartment is stocked with everything you could need, and we felt right at home. Janet is always quick to respond to any questions. We would recommend this apartment to anyone who wants more authentic NYC experience!
The whole experience and communication with Janet was excellent. She always responded promptly. Apartment had everything we needed, it had great information provided for local area and beyond… Janet was waiting for us on arrival and explained how things worked within apartment and also tips for nearest subway etc to get downtown. It was really easy to be in Times Square within 15mins. We had a couple of queries during our trip to which Janet responded very quickly. Would stay here again…. I visited with my sister and this was perfect for the 2 of us. Have always wanted to visit in December for Christmas lights and atmosphere and it didn’t disappoint.
My two teenagers and I had a wonderful week at this property. The neighborhood felt both lively and safe, the subway was very close, and the apartment itself had a warm, cozy feel. Janet was an excellent host.
This apartment has everything that you will need for an overnight or a multi night stay. Janet was a great host. She had some staples, coffee, cereal, cookies, milk, orange juice and a bottle of wine for us when we arrived. Janet also sat with us upon our arrival to explain the public transportation system and answer any questions we had. If you are from a small town like I am, I think it’s important to understand that this rental is in Harlem. It is definitely not the greatest neighborhood. My wife and I witnessed an “incident” on our first day that made my wife want to leave and come home. I will say that we never felt threatened or unwelcome during our time there. We also made it a point to be back before it was dark. The apartment is near the subway and bus stop and there is a nice little grocery store nearby.
Janet's Harlem apartment was affordable and just what we needed for our one week stay in NYC. Location is great - it is a short walk to the subway. The apartment was clean and air-conditioned, and the beds were comfortable. Most notable was Janet's amazing hospitality - we arrived hungry and were delighted that she had left fresh cookies and fruit for us in the fridge, as well as a bottle of wine, and breakfast food for the next morning. She was always in good communication when we needed it - we knew we were in good hands. Thank you, Janet!
This property is exactly as described in the listing and is convenient to several metro options. Janet was extremely kind and had taken into account anything that a traveler could need in a rental!
a bit inconvenient for visiting all 5 boroughs of NYC by public transportation
The stay was very nice. Area was nice we felt safe there the whole time. Easy to get on subways from there.
We really enjoyed our stay. The apartment was well appointed with everything we needed. Our host, Janet, was very good. She looked after our bags when we had arrived early after a long flight from Australia. The location in Harlem is great. Easy walking distance to Harlem attractions and the Metro. A really good stay with a very helpful host.
Very helpful landlady and lots of advance info sent through following the booking & payment. Secure open plan apartment in an area that was safe and non-threatening. Facilities (washing machine, tumble drier, mini oven, microwave, gas oven & hob) all in working order, if a little dated. Efficient shower. Large fridge and freezer. Good & effective heating system. Mainly quiet area, and quiet at night. The house is the last in a block row of attractive 3/4 floor brownstone houses lined with trees and the adjacent large corner lot leading to Frederick Douglas Avenue is a fenced-in secure unused tarmac area, so no neighbours! Supermarket just across the Avenue on the junction has most everything food wise one might need. And BTL Wines on W127th St / St Nicholas Ave is close by for good inexpensive (or expensive!) wine with very helpful staff and a spacious relaxed layout. Subway access on 125th or 127th/st Nicholas Ave is close and convenient…. All in all a really well positioned, usefully equipped apartment for two in an interesting area, with easy access to Central Park & downtown Manhattan. Highly recommended!
We really enjoyed our stay at Harlem. It was perfectly situated for what we needed. Close access to the subway and walking distance to Central Park. Janet was very friendly and sat with us when we first arrived and answered any questions we had. The apartment was clean comfy and well stocked. Would definitely stay there again when we go to New York
