Every year we take a family vacation somewhere different. We had friends recommend the Silver Lake area and we chose to stay at Stony Lake 15-20 minutes away. It was perfect! Stony Lake is quiet and picturesque! The cottage was quaint and comfortable and had everything we needed. Places we needed or wanted to go were all within 1/2 hour drive. The cottage was the perfect place to relax and unwind for a week!
dirty, unclean, moldy - do not recommend
We had great family time.
Peaceful place, near the Silver lake sand dunes and Lake Michigan.
Away from the hustle and bustle, this property is tucked away in the woods. Where Mother Nature is the soundtrack. And beautiful sandy, Lake Michigan beaches are just a few miles away. Waking up and watching the morning sun rise over the Marsh, reading a book on the deck, sipping some coffee. It’s what I needed.
This is the third year we have rented this cottage. My 3 kids now ask each year when we are going. Being on the end of the row of cottages overlooking the marsh gives you the ultimate privacy. You don't see or hear any neighbors. We would eat meals outdoors on the deck over the marsh. As others have said, the area at the dock isn't great for swimming. But we rented a pontoon and loved it. Kids also tubed the channel to Lake Michigan.
We had a nice stay. The location was great. We were looking for a getaway where we could social distance and this was perfect. It’s in a pretty rural area but there are still plenty of things to do. We loved driving to Silver Lake. The beach was great for the kids to swim. We were a little disappointed that the landscaping was not kept up. You could tell at one time it was well loved but is getting overgrown. The kids wanted to fish but the area in front of the house was to overgrown. The beds were comfortable and we liked having a grill and fire pit. The bathroom was recently remodeled. We enjoyed seeing swans, ducks, geese, and deer. We did lose internet and cable tv. The owner was quick to respond and had the issue resolved promptly. We would come back!
Property was nice, could have been cleaner, lots of bugs in window tracks, on counters, etc. Landscape appears to have been beautiful at one time needs some major clean up and trimming of trees and bushes. My kids were disappointed that there was no where to swim around the house everything was overgrown and “mucky”. You really need some type of a boat if you rent this house to be able to get to the areas on the lake you can enjoy. ***Biggest downfall, NO AIR CONDITIONING! This made it very uncomfortable especially to sleep. There were lots of fans and several dehumidifiers, the owners tried to make it as comfortable as they could but it was an extremely hot week (in the 90’s). All in all we made the best of it?
We enjoyed our stay at the marsh house. It’s very quiet and secluded there. Favorites: Having the kayaks available for daily use on the lake, the fire pit on the deck, king sized master bedroom, washer/dryer for swimsuits and towels, both gas and charcoal grills, outdoor dining area, plenty of sleeping, great TVs with services for evening movies, many local beaches and attractions. We visited Silver Lake-mini golf, Mac Woods Dune Rides (go at about 4:30pm—no wait!), many beach spots—Silver Lake State Park, floating down the stream from Stony Lake to Lake MI, Little Sable Lighthouse and beach, Golden Sands (tiny, kinda private) beach, Pentwater—the town and Mears State Park (favorite), Fox Barn Winery (would go again!), husband and son golfed at Benona Shores. That being said, we were initially disappointed that the lake access for this property was not at all swim-able. It was very weedy and marshy and full of turtles. But we were able to enjoy Stony Lake on the kayaks and found our lake fun nearby instead of using it as a swimming lake. So just keep that in mind if you’re looking to just stay around the cottage for your water fun.
This property is wonderful choice. The secluded house feels like a cozy home in the woods. The furniture is comfortable especially the bed. I was impressed with the well stocked kitchen. The house is surrounded by nature...if you are an early morning riser, the sunrise from the deck is phenominal!
