Lummi Island, Washington
This waterfront home at the water's edge on Hale Passage with 180 degree views, looks at majestic Mt. Baker and at night the beautiful lights of Bellingham Bay.
Views are spectacular. Watching the sun rise is a 'to be remembered' experience as are the full moons rising. As you walk into this home on the beach with hand-split cedar shakes, you see water everywhere. Bedrooms are furnished with American and English
antique furnishings. There is ceramic tile throughout the main floor and radiant heat in some areas. A Jøtul stove provides a special warmth on cool nights.
This private home on the beach is tucked against a hillside with easy access to boating, swimming, and beach combing. It is walking distance from the ferry landing--about 1 mile by beach and 1-1/2 miles by road. A regular sight are the seagulls, herons, kingfishers, eagles, seals, sea otter, and deer. At low tide, you have access to an inviting sandy tide flat with clams and crab, tide pools and beach-rock inhabitants. It is a haven to relax; a great place for families and friends.
A short 10-minute ferry ride takes you to rural Lummi Island--a small wooded Island. Lummi has a population of about 900 which probably doubles or triples in the summer months. Day trips can be made to Vancouver BC, Seattle or Mt Baker. You are 20 minutes from shopping in Bellingham, Lynden, and the Canadian border.
There are ten miles of roads for bikers--mostly following the beaches of the Island. For the beach comber there are many treasures--agates, shells, beach glass. It is a great place to relax and read as well--and to just enjoy the views.
Saturdays feature a Saturday market from June through August. You can purchase fresh produce, pastries, and local artists show their wares. There is one restaurants (the Beach Store Cafe) the Island as well as a general grocery store. Two churches on the Island hold services Sunday mornings--Island Chapel meets at the Lummi Island Grange Hall across the street from the post office and about a block north of the ferry dock.

Lovely beach front home with direct access to the rocky, log strewn beach. The home was comfortable and cozy with an electric wood burning stove in the living space. The dining area accommodated 10 for Thanksgiving dinner and the kitchen was large and open. The master bedroom also provided floor to ceiling views of Mt. Baker. The master bathroom has a soaking tub and sink. The toilet is shared by the adjacent bedroom. The shower is in the first floor bathroom which is located off of the living room and must be shared by all three bedrooms. The first floor bedroom also with views of Mt. Baker has a half bath. We didnโt have kids with us so didnโt use the bunk beds on the loft. The front of the house has gorgeous red cedar trees. We parked in the garage (very steep driveway) which was helpful in unloading directly into the house. We loved Lummi Island and itโs was a special relaxing retreat for a long Thanksgiving weekend with family.
We had such a great time! Home was clean and comfortable. Everyone had a blast beach combing and we did multiple hikes in the different Reserves on the island. The views are amazing from the back decks! Only negative was that the electricity went out 2x during two wind storms. Would have been nice to have some emergency candles or flashlights. But Iโm hoping this is a rare occurrence so hopefully it wonโt happen again. We will definitely come back!
Great house, gorgeous location and views. We all loved it!
Clean and comfortable exceeded everyoneโs expectations and we all had a great time!
The property was quiet and bwautiful, everyone loved it.
What a lovely place in the Pacific Northwest! We had such beautiful views of Mt Baker +. The mountain and ocean views are excellent. Sunrise spectacular! Herons, Bald Eagles, King Fishers, Loon ,occasional seal, otters, deer and so many ocean creatures to discover at low tide! The house is lovely and comfortable! Wide beautiful deck and landscape. The driveway was a little daunting? we brought kayaks and paddle board and Highly recommend bringing your own! We loved this place! If you like nature youโll love it!
Views from this comfortable cabin are unparalleled. We had s'mores in the firepit, walked the beach at low tide, admired herons, eagles and deer all on the beach, and enjoyed the cottage garden flowers. Hiked Baker preserve, biked the quiet roads, and even played pickleball at the school. Hosts were very accommodating. Hope to return.
Gorgeous setting! Mel and Louise are wonderful hosts that go above and beyond. Our family had a great time at this home on Lummi Island. Perfect view of the sunrise and Mt. Baker, with a quick jaunt around the island to Sunset Beach to see a gorgeous sunset. Minus tide allowed us to find and see beautiful Starfish. Eagles were a daily sighting, along with Blue Herron. Looking forward to the next time!
It was so nice to arrive in the evening with the gas fireplace on and the house toasty. The views from most every window were amazing. We were lucky to have a minus tide and got to see a purple sea star, so glad to see they are repopulating. Many gulls, ducks, Heron, and even deer shared the beach at low tide. The house was comfortable and inviting. Kitchen was well stocked with dishes, pots&pans, and utensils. The bed in the master suite was comfortable and I loved looking out at the water view as lazed in bed in the morning.
We had a great stay! Itโs an amazing property right on the water and the house is really nice, was very clean and the owners are kind and very communicative.
We deeply enjoyed the time we spent at the house. Views, wild life, quiet were wonderful.
We could not have asked for a more beautiful home to stay in for our large family. It was just as listed and only the views surpassed the beauty of the pictures online. The weather was phenomenal, the stars at night were breathtaking and we created some lovely family memories and pictures we'll treasure forever. Our dog had the time of his life as well. I hope we can return someday:)
We had a hard time leaving. Mel & Louise have a gem of a place. They were so kind. Mel even let my teen borrow his fishing pole and tackle box. It was heaven.
The beachfront experience was so great - watching the tides, exploring the eelgrass meadows and mudflats at low tiding and finding rocks crabs, spider crabs, red and purple sea stars, sand dollars, calms in the sand; swimming at high tide, and paddle boarding at all times between! We watched seals, sea otters, salmon, bald eagles and great blue herons from the deck (make sure you bring binoculars). The sunrise was amazing and the view of Mount Baker was stunning every day. The house was lovely and had everything we needed to be comfortable. It was really nice having the washer/dryer and the kids enjoyed a bubble bath in the big soaking tub. The hiking at the Baker Preserve and the Otto Preserve was great with old growth forests and wildlife. There is a pretty sculpture garden just down the road from the house with a fun swing overlooking Hale's Passage. The driveway requires a brave driver but gets easier with practice. We would highly recommend this home to anyone looking to relax and experience all the PNW coast has to offer.
We had a wonderful time there. We might have seen three orca even from the property!
Our children had a wonderful time at the house for their annual gathering. It's a beautiful property in a beautiful place. Well worth the opportunity. Nice folks!
Our family completely enjoyed this beautiful property -- the siting, the wonderful house, and the ease of our experience! Thanks so much to our great hosts -- Louise and Mel -- for sharing their lovely place with us.
Loved our stay, views and wildlife make a perfect combination. Accomodations are wonderful, our family ranged from 4-67 and everyone had a great week.
Great
