Charleston, West Virginia
Hi, we are Ron and Nancy Thaxton, your host, living on 17 mountain acres 15 minutes outside of our State Capital, Charleston, WV.
Our beautiful property, "Old Woodland Acres" has been in our family for over 150 years.
It is a well kept secret... offering tranquility to an otherwise noisy, crowded world.
Hi, I'm glad you stopped in my Old Woodland Acres' 1930's Old Stone Carriage House ... Look around the Cottage, our City and the professional photo shoot on Old Woodland Acres featured in, "Wedding Chicks".
Every Season of year and life is celebrated at Old Woodland Acres.
Welcome to my 1930's Old Stone Carriage House...Lot's of History. The 1930's Carriage House was built close to the dirt road in the days of horses and buckboards An old spring above the Carriage House flowed into the house and filled the stone *cistern in the basement to keep the buttermilk cold.
* A cistern (Middle English cisterne, from Latin cisterna, from cista, "box", from Greek κίστη kistē, "basket") is a waterproof receptacle for holding liquids, usually water. Cisterns are often built to catch and store rainwater. Cisterns are distinguished from wells by their waterproof linings.
The 1930"s Carriage House is beautifully updated with keeping the original hardwood floors, Iron bathtub and tile floors. The "then" Air Conditioning was the cool breeze from the 'holler" across the covered front porch. The "now" Dining Room "was then" where the ladies would gather for quilting. Notice the natural stone terrazzo windowsills and Fireplace surround. (now electric) "Then" A roaring fire would be built in the basement's Fireplace, by grandfather to warm both ours and neighborhood children on cold winter days before the school bus arrived.
Enjoy my 3 Beautiful Bedrooms, 1 1/2 Bath, Cozy Living room, Dining Room for 6, to the Brilliance of color in the fully equipped eat-in Kitchen
As a professional Designer, Event & Travel Planner, designing my Cottage has been so much fun... See you soon - Nanc

Love our Cottage and Enjoy your stay
This cottage was so cute. Our family felt right at home there.
Perfect halfway point for our yearly high school reunion - 3 forever friends 2 from Indiana - 1 from Virginia. Cottage was charming & decorated to make it so cozy. It had everything we needed & extra touches - muffins - that were so welcoming. Area info provided us with lots of ideas to enjoy in the area. Would highly recommend ❤️❤️❤️
The cottage was so quaint and happy at same time. Beds were soooo comfortable. We enjoyed our time at this property. We are already planning a return.
This is our second stay as a group here and we love it. We bring some food and sit and talk for hours at a time. Beds are clean and comfy and it is everything we need. This year weather was great to sit on porch a lot. Thankyou!
This is our third stay!! We love the house and the hosts! We love to wake up and take walks on the grounds! It is wooded with plenty of wild life!!
First I would like to say that the house we stayed in was very warm, inviting and clean (minus many ladybugs, but they didn't bother us).Now I would like to add that after an 8 plus hour drive counting driveways in order to find the house was not on our bucket list. We pulled up to a very cracked and rocky driveway so close to the road that my sister and I looked at each other in disbelief. The driveway description was misleading in my opinion and after reading the disclosure statement about the owner relinquishing any liability for injury I could clearly see why. We have rented many VRBO's,mainly off the beaten path so being so close to a very busy road was not our thing. All and all though the scenery was beautiful and as mentioned before the inside of the house was very lovely however I don't think we will be returning anytime soon. Thank You~SB
Quaint and comfortable great for weekend getaway. Steepness of terrain difficult for some of us with walking problems, made us hesitant to go out and about. Must have overlooked that in description.
Needed a getaway from the city. This was absolutely perfect! Muffins were amazing!
The cottage was very welcoming with fresh muffins and bottled water waiting for us on our arrival. We enjoyed the coziness of the living space and appreciated the use of the fire pit and walking paths in the property Beds were very comfortable and kitchen had all we needed to cook while we were there. Only negative was The traffic on the adjacent rural road was loud at times while sitting on the porch, but fine while indoors Would definitely visit again
This old and thoughtfully updated carriage house in the West Virginia hills was all we could have hoped for. A/C in every room, comfy beds, a fully equipped kitchen, and two lovely porches for dining or just enjoying the birdsong and breeze. Nancy was very responsive to our requests. Convenient to Charleston and any shopping needs. We would definitely stay again when we are in the area.
