The Sea Ranch, California
This dramatic home is designed by an award-winning architect to comfortably accommodate families and groups in an inspirational, nature-oriented space. In the tradition of the original Sea Ranch homes, the interior features warm wood floors, ceilings and paneling, as well as playful features like the interior bridges that cross above the great room.
The 3-story great room on the main floor connects through broad sliding doors to covered porches and inviting outdoor sitting areas on three sides of the home. The great room has a bright living area with a wood-burning fireplace (wood provided) and a large corner window-seat overlooking ocean and forest views. Within the great room, the dining area seats 10 comfortably and the open kitchen is centered around an island for groups to prepare meals together and socialize.
The outdoor sitting areas include a fenced, wind-protected patio for barbecues adjacent to the dining area, an open terrace with a picnic table adjacent to the kitchen, and a lower terrace adjacent to the living area for enjoying the forest meadow and watching the sunset, all with broad benches to seat groups. Steps away is an ocean-view hot tub and a charcoal BBQ grill.
A well-maintained trail near the house leads down to the ocean bluffs and then along the oceanfront to Black Point Beach and Pebble Beach. A short walk along this same path in the other direction leads to the Sea Ranch Cafe for breakfast, lunch, and take-out food.
The 4 wood-trimmed bedrooms are located on the three levels of the home, some with fun access across the interior bridges. The bedroom on the main level of the home has an adjoining bathroom. This bedroom is furnished with a Queen-sized bed and has doors to the covered porch. The bedroom on the second floor has another Queen-sized bed and adjoining bathroom. The two bedrooms on the third floor sleep a total of 6 guests in one Queen-sized, two Twin, and two bunk beds.
Two beautiful skylit bathrooms with shower/tub combos are located on the first and second floors.
The Sea Ranch is a planned community with over 3000 acres featuring the historic Sea Ranch Chapel, The Sea Ranch Lodge (restaurant and shopping), a 50-mile trail system with many beach access points, 18-hole golf course (open to the public), dog park, and 3 recreation centers with outdoor pools, locker rooms, half-basketball court, and tennis courts (amenities vary with each center) for guest use. The toilet did not work and after trying to reach the property management for 12 hours they said they couldn’t fix it. So we had to have a hose in the toilet the entire trip for it to flush. The grill was falling apart, ruined 100 dollars of meat due to the grate breaking. Asked for a replacement grill and they brought one the size of my foot. We had a family of 7… not much eating out at the sea ranch. The house is in disrepair, the sink faucet is hanging on by a thread. No storage items for food, no salt, pepper, etc. All household items need repair. There is an entire room locked off that they don’t tell you about when you book the place. The hot tub is also on its last leg. I do not recommend booking this place at all. There are more affordable places within walking distance of the ocean.
Everything was great! Check-in was a tad confusing, but we figured it out.
A girls trip weekend to decompress from pandemic stress, plenty to explore in the area but peaceful at the same time. Comfy beds, great lounge furniture, simple hot tub procedures. Our only quibbles are heat related: the broken fireplace - hopefully it is fixed soon, and the heat was hard to get right (the 2nd floor bathroom gets especially hot!). This is just for the property manager: the light bulb is out in the refrigerator and the dishwasher works a lot better with the Cascade pods.
Loved the property, but maybe there could be some other way to check in/out other than a half hour roundtrip out of the way to pick up and drop off keys?
We were really excited to stay at Sea Ranch again - it had been at least 10 years since our last time renting a house on property. Looking at the listing and description here on VRBO we were honestly thrilled and the amenities looked appropriate to our needs. The house (structure) was in solid shape - we enjoyed the warm woods throughout. However, there are a few items to note...first the kitchen; the owner needs to replace the oven, hood and upgrade many of the utensils. Both the oven and the hood were held together by tape - which looked horrible and for the oven (which is gas run) seemed unsafe. The utensils, plates/bowls and other kitchen tools were old and many unclean when we arrived. The bedrooms; the size of the rooms were appropriate, but the bedding needed to be replaced. The sheets were old along with the bed covers and pillows. To be even more specific the pillows were as flat as a book and completely unsupportive of our heads when sleeping. Also, the bath towels had holes - time for new towels. Lastly, I want to mention the amount of bugs and ticks in the house. We ran into multiple spider webs and live spiders which we had to remove humanely. In addition we saw numerous ticks on the floor and some on our bodies. Please note, we were not running through tall grasses. The ticks seemed to be present when we arrived. We will probably stay at Sea Ranch again but will be more rigorous when selecting our house - might ask more questions (e.g. cleanliness) before booking. Also, please note when checking out we had to drive all the way back to Gualala (Grand Welcome Rental office) - to return our house packet which contained the keys. I would of thought the lockbox could of been used right outside the front door.
We had a family reunion at the property -- 7 adults who hadn't all been together for several years. The house was warm, friendly, well located near to the ocean, and very comfortable for our very informal gathering. The kitchen was perfect for all our meals and snacks. The bedrooms were very comfortable. The hot tub was warm, inviting, and very usable on the cool mornings and evenings. Unfortunately the fireplace -- although well stocked with firewood and kindling -- didn't work at all. We even had a maintenance person come over to try fixing the problem with the flue. But he was also unsuccessful. This should definitely be repaired. Also, the skylight windows on the top floor didn't open. This would hove provided some additional ventilation. But overall we had a great experience and heartily recommend this property.
The rental process was very easy. The home is spacious with comfortable beds and furniture. The dining table is large enough to accommodate family meals and games. There is a nice view of the waves from the front porch and plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy nature. We did have a difficult time locating the thermostat which is in an unconventional location...inside the bookcase, behind a brochure. A note in the property information guide on this would be helpful. Cleanliness was adequate for surface cleaning. This house is in need of a deep clean...under the table glass top and under beds, cobwebs, and some of the dishes needed to be rewashed as they were put away dirty. These are minor things. There is a television, but it is an outdated box TV and in an awkward location, so if you plan to watch movies at night in front of the fireplace, you will want to bring a laptop. Overall, our experience was great. We were able to quickly drive to and park within a short walk from all of the beaches and the weather was beautiful and sunny. Even though there were some especially windy days, the comfortable home, wonderful view, and options for hiking in the forest, walking on the beach, or lounging in the hot tub made it the peaceful respite we were hoping for.
What a wonderful get away cabin loved every bit!
Nice property. Our family enjoyed it.
Very peaceful location, great for star gazing. House and amenities are a bit run down and could use an upgrade, pillows are flat as pancakes. If you have kids be aware that most of the windows don't have blinds so prepare for some early wake ups.
