Saugerties, New York
Big Pink, the house where Bob Dylan's Basement Tapes were recorded with his back-up band, later know as The Band, whose first album was called "Music from Big Pink".
Note: The Basement is not included in the rental.
Bethel Center for the Arts is 1 hour 40 minutes from Big PInk--not 10 minutes as the VRBO platform indicates.
The updated Dormer unit was Levon Helm's bunk area back In the late '60s. The Central Staircase opens mid-unit to a dining table & chairs; to the right is a desk-bar; the kitchen, with stone counter-top; bathroom with tile shower, and a futon-couch-sitting area. To the left, in the bedroom area, there’s a sitting area with TV/DVD and a queen bed with a quality mattress set. The Dormer has air-conditioning, and views of Overlook Mountain, fields and forest. Outside is the lawn with out-door furniture & original stone fireplace/bbq area nestled beneath the pines. The Dormer can sleep 4, and has WiFi.
The main floor is a 2 bedroom unit with a sunroom ( Rick's room - was Rick Danko's quarters), living room with sofa, writing table & chairs at the picture window, wood-stove/fireplace. It opens into the Dining Room, which has a antique dining table & chairs for 6. The kitchen, as does much of the house, maintains the mid-century period look, with forest views east. The main bedroom has a queen-sized bed, desk, sitting area & full closet. The second bedroom has 2 twin beds, dressers and side tables. The sunroom had a futon twin couch ( which folds down to become a sleeper). The sunroom has its own back entrance, and opens to the lawn and old out-door fireplace for campfire evenings.
There are several outside security cameras on the property.
Wonderful home, decor to take you back in time and provide you with the same peace and serenity that The Band was looking for when they came to the Big Pink. The owners are very friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable.
We had an amazing weekend living in the rocknroll time capsule of Big Pink. Susan and Don were gracious hosts. They toured us through the basement and gave such insight and history of the sacred space. The house and grounds are kept beautifully. Relics from Dylan and the Band are still in place. Fans from around the world stopped by to take a peek. A band stopped by and jammed in the legendary basement. Enjoy! Enjoy! We will return for an encore visit. You'll get it when you get there. We were thrilled to be able to stay at Big Pink and looking forward to it as the highlight of our trip - and we were not disappointed. Stepping inside was like stepping into history. Susan and Don have truly kept the spirit of the place alive in the way that they have furnished the house with retro furnishings and bits and pieces, as though The Band have just stepped outside! It is also supremely comfortable and relaxing, with everything you could need for a great weekend. We had a fantastic evening out in the garden cooking sausages and s'mores, as well as a couple of great nights out in Woodstock at the Colony and the Bear Cafe. But best of all was meeting Don and sitting in the Basement drinking tea and hearing about the old Woodstock days.. Thanks so much Don and Sue! Hope to be back some time.. Everything you could want from a stay in Big Pink. The vibe is so good. Don and Sue are the BEST and the perfect people to own Big Pink. DO IT!
It was everything I hoped it would be -- a comfortable and invigorating weekend retreat plus a wonderful invocation of the spirit(s) of its musical history. Don and Susan were exemplary hosts.
I surprised my boyfriend with a stay at Big Pink. The owner was helpful and enthusiastic in helping me pull off the surprise. We were given a great tour of the house and what occurred where. Besides the great history of the home, it's a very nice place to stay, and quiet off the beaten path. We enjoyed sitting in the yard in the woods watching fireflies.
Do you love Bob Dylan's initial foray into electric music? Love The Band? At the same time, how much peaceful quiet can you let into your heart, your soul? Do you love driving country roads, for that matter? And are you willing to climb a mountain to look over the world, while passing a ghost hotel along the way? All of these things await you at Big Pink and in and around Woodstock, NY. I visited BP for just the first two things, and it was the rest of what I've described--along with BP's utterly wonderful and charming owners, Susan and Don--that captured my heart and imagination and delivered to me what was simply a perfect 48 hour visit, one I'll remember for, well, forever, and one I'll return to just as soon as fate and circumstances let me. The house itself is thankfully preserved in its late '60s state--quaint, comfy, and accommodates at least 6 sleepers easily. The kitchen(s) and bathrooms are in particularly great shape, if that's important. The grounds are uber rural and you will be welcomed to each new day by a bird song no one's ever heard before. The surrounding hills are a thing to explore, many of them stitched with low slung stone walls that true patriot farmers once built. Woodstock is a 15 minute drive away, with its classic houses, charming eateries, historic sites, and its many inevitable goofy nods to hippiedom. Live music can still be found on many nights, and if you're lucky, like I was, you may catch a show that features the same kind of NYC-grade talent that seeks escape in these environs just as occurred back in the '60s and '70s and put Woodstock on the music map. Do yourself the favor of climbing Overlook Mountain and take in the view from the stone ledge up there, or from atop the fire observation tower that awaits you (and have fun poking around inside the abandoned Overlook Mountain House, a former hotel now almost a century into being reclaimed by the woods that surround it. Also, if the pull to revisit the musical past is strong, bop on down to Bethel, NY, about 2 hours away, and take in the magnificently preserved site of the Woodstock Festival, the field of which I walked around freely by myself with Hendrix's festival closing performance playing in my back pocket a la' my iPhone. Finally, know that Don and Susan are ridiculously generous hosts, both with tips and information, and with their appreciation for our collective affinity for BP. My last hour there, spent visiting with them, was my best!
Our stay was more than we could have expected. Susan and Don were lovely hosts; the property is beautiful and carefully preserved; and the opportunity to share in such a rich history was a once in a lifetime, incredible experience. A big thank you to the LaSalas for allowing us to share this living monument to an amazing artistic heritage.
It was a real honour to stay at the Big Pink. Don and Susan were amazing hosts. The house is very well maintained and the surrounding area is beautiful. We walked around the house and property while looking at Elliott Landy photos taken in the same spot. It was surreal. Highly recommended.
The opportunity to stay in Big Pink is incredible, and the home could not have better stewards than Susan and Don. Highly recommended!
