Stayed May 17, 2025After a tour understanding the history of the caves in Matera, it is a humbling experience to stay with all the modern amenities of electricity, running water and yes, internet! Lorella has made this a clean, cutely decorated apartment, it’s in a great spot to walk everywhere. Be aware that it’s a bit of a hike to the property, so be in good health. Although, lorella came to meet us on the Main Street and hauled half the stuff up. Another great aspect of a true host is responsiveness. Our first afternoon had challenges with the internet and power outages. She was in communication all the time helping us. Thank you, Lorella. You made this a magical experience.

Stayed Apr 15, 2025This is an ancient city. It was fascinating to stay in one of the caves where people have lived for over 4000 years. But recently upgraded to modern day comforts and safety. The bedroom/living area is well appointed. The kitchen had everything one needed, and the bathroom had a shower in the cave wall that was as unusual as the city. I enjoyed my stay very much.

Stayed Oct 30, 2024The property is in a great location within walking distance to everything in the Sassi. The bed is very comfortable and how cool to shower in a cave! The kitchen is well equipped and stocked with some breakfast items. The host also had a bottle of wine for us to enjoy. I would definitely recommend this rental.

Stayed Sep 23, 2024We stayed in this wonderful place for 10 nights. There are no words to describe it. It truly felt like a home. If you are renting a car, be sure to download the app, Easy Park. The parking lot we used is called Saragat. When you park the car, be sure to take a photo of the parking spot number in case you have to extend your hours of parking. A red bus with Stassi as the destination picks you up right outside the lot and runs every 20 minutes. The fee is 1.5 euros per person. Make sure you have coins or small bill denominations. The most difficult part of our 2 weeks in Italy was breaking any bill large than a 20. The bus delivers you to the Plaza in the old town and it is just a brief walk up to the unit. The host met us at the door and gave us a tour of the place. The amenities are well thought out and she had the refrigerator stocked with yogurt, drinks and basic groceries. The wi-fi worked beautifully and maid service was outstanding. We made friends with Roland, the water at the restaurant at the end of the steps and also had coffee every morning at one of the hundreds of cafe's. We explored the old town every day and enjoyed the tours of the ancient caves, the aquifier and all of the craftsmen selling their wares. Be prepared for millions of stairs and wear extremely comfortable shoes with rubber soles. The restaurants were wonderful, we especially enjoyed Francesca's and every day was an adventure. I can not say enough about this incredible host!

Stayed Aug 30, 2024Enjoyed our few nights in Sassi’s beautifull surroundings and great atmosphere. Almost forgot about the neighbours’ dog already who kept us awake during the nights. I would check upfront next time if that dog is still there.

Stayed Jul 27, 2024Matera is an incredible city and this was the perfect place to stay! We found Le Luminarie Sassi to be perfectly appointed in every way. There were plenty of amenities: lovely coffee and teas as well as beverages, snacks, breakfast goodies and complimentary wine from our kind and helpful host, Lorella. The bed was comfortable, kitchen items and appliances for all needs, and shower was beautiful as pictured. The location has an incredible view and is close to everything within walking distance. We loved our stay and definitely recommend this property!
