We really enjoyed our stay. Owners were very helpful before and during our stay with information. The view of the water from the house is amazing and so helpful for our family with mobility challenges. We knew ahead of time that they would not be able to get to the beach due to lack of stable finished stairs down to the beach so it was okay with us. We got used to the driveway but it is not for the faint of heart. Internet was good. phone service spotty. We even saw a 4 foot sturgeon in the surf from the house!
What a pleasant surprise! As soon as you are at the top of the driveway you get your first glimpse of absolute beauty. The lake view is amazing! It's private, quiet and safe. 10/10 we would stay again. The only issue with this property is the walk down to the beach. We are young and spry so it wasn't a big deal but an elderly person would have difficulty. Still overall, so awesome!
An absolutely lovely home with stunning views of the lake made for an excellent family vacation. The house was very comfortable and had everything we needed to ensure a great stay. The owner let us know in advance that the beach was small this year and that dune erosion meant that the stairs would not be available. We found the rope ladder that was there instead to be very easy to get up and down--not too steep a climb at all. A lovely porch with great sunset views, and amazing windows in the living area so that you could enjoy the outside even while you were inside. Absolutely beautiful.
My husband and I arrived at the Montague rental. We walked around the property and saw a huge cliff at the front of the house. The drop off was roped off with yellow caution tape because the stairs all washed away. The VRBO owner has totally misleading pics on VRBO. Plus the house is now green. My husband and I went into town and received a call my mother in law was in ICU. So we returned home rather than staying. Also there is 0 internet access. Need misleading pics and internet information corrected.
Other than access to the beach, the cottage worked out very well for our family. Hopefully the steep bank will slowly erode back to a workable level or new steps are installed. :) :)
Highly recommended. This home is in the Big Flower Creek association on an eroding 15-foot-high bluff just a few yards from Lake Michigan. The home is older but well-equipped, including kitchen, den, dining area, three bedrooms sleeping six, and a loft area excellent for playing games. Large windows and a small but comfortable patio offer a panoramic view of the big lake. Beach access is by rope ladder on a sandy slope and requires some agility. The water is shallow and often quite clear; it's possible to walk about a mile north in front of private homes; just a quarter mile to the south is the mouth of Big Flower Creek, which borders a dune nature preserve with beautiful boardwalk trails, and then Meinert Park at the mouth of Little Flower Creek is just under a mile to the south.
Home comfortable and clean, including beds. Very nice porch with awesome sunset views. Quiet neighborhood. We had some nice kayaking adventures on the Lake and in nearby creek. Also good hiking in preserve. Nice fireplace we used since we were here during coldest week of summer. Downsides: The listed half bath is a toilet in the basement. Due to high water levels there is very little beach and it’s a challenge to access. Due to rope ladder and giant sandbags one has to climb over. Our 85 year old mother was unable to get to beach. Updating the picture online would help show the site realistically.
The home was clean and comfortable. Plenty of towels, linens and pillows were provided. And there were even soaps, shampoos, conditioners and body wash. Kitchen had all the necessities. We could have used an extra baking pan but we made due. The house itself has an incredible porch that overlooks Lake Michigan. And if it rains or the mosquitos are biting too bad, there are nice big windows on the lake side of the house for great views while inside. As many have said in other reviews, the beach is eroded and it’s a rope ladder climb to the beach and back (stairs are a short distance away). But there is enough space for beach chairs and walks on the beach heading south. The erosion really didn’t hamper our enjoyment of the beach at all. I would definitely recommend this property for a quiet, relaxing, beach getaways.
I did not want to leave when our time was up. The views from the porch and property were simply beautiful! The breeze coming from the lake was wonderful and the sunsets were amazing. The house has gone through updates from what is pictured. The inside of the house was well stocked, clean, and very comfortable. The driveway is terrifying if you are not used to steep inclines. We ended up parking at the bottom and walked up the paved driveway. The beach has eroded tremendously from what is pictured, so you do not get a clear picture of what the beach looks like. It is still perfectly adequate for beach chairs and for kids playing in the sand on calm and moderate days. On days where the waves are large, the beach isn't ideal for sitting on. However, there is plenty of space and seating up near the house with spectacular views for those rough days. We had a fantastic experience with the owner. We had the unfortunate luck of being in the house when the well pump went out. She was quick to respond and do everything she could to offer help during the situation. The pump was fixed as quickly as possible and we still had a wonderful vacation. I highly recommend this property for your family vacation. We would definitely return if we are ever back in the area.
Our family stayed at the cottage just after Covid-19 restrictions lifted. It was a great place to enjoy getting outside and relaxing after months of working from home. The views are great and we were able to get to the beach easily using the rope ladder. While water levels are high, most days we were able to walk the beach in both directions for a significant distance (but you need to be okay crossing a couple of creeks if you walk South. A few nearby high water abatement projects, but easy to walk past unless surf is high.) The interior updates (not pictured yet in photos when we went) make for a relaxed beach cottage vibe. We enjoyed lunches on the porch, conveniently accessed through a new door. You can drive up and park right next to the cottage, but the driveway is steep and not for the faint of heart! We had a lovely time in this quiet spot.
